  1. Another update -- i rebooted and re-started the array and now disk 1 is showing up as mounted. Should I still attempt those steps on disk 3? (which is currently 'not installed')? Or was that what i should do after adding the (old parity) drive as disk 3? (UPDATE: guessing that is what you meant - as clicking on disk 3 when it is 'not installed' doesn't allow me to do anything best I can tell). kowunraid-diagnostics-20221225-1347.zip
  2. sdc is the original disk 3 (which failed smart health check and was shown as unmountable when i originally started this thread)
  3. Well crud -- now it is showing disk 1 as unmountable. kowunraid-diagnostics-20221225-1311.zip
  4. Ok - this what you're looking for? New 14TB drive that I copied parity to is assigned to parity. Disk 1 (ending in VALG) -- the original disk 1 -- is assigned back as disk 1. Disk 3 is the original parity.
  5. The only drive I have big enough to hold it would be that 8TB former parity drive. I have two external 4 TB drives I could copy things to though.
  6. Yea. Summary sounds accurate and I can see all the data on the mounted original disk 1. I have got a directory listing of everything on the drive - and have tried copying a couple 1GB files off of it onto my laptop.
  7. Ok, copying of the parity drive just finished, array is still stopped - here are the diagnostics: kowunraid-diagnostics-20221225-1009.zip
  8. Parity is still copying, won’t be done tonight so I’ll post tomorrow.
  9. Ok - not sure what the deal is or if this changes things -- but I am currently able to mount that 8TB drive in the 'unassigned devices' area and access the files on it (first thing I've done is create a read-only windows share on it -- then did a "dir /b /s /od > c:\temp\filelist.txt" so i at least have a list of everything I may be losing so I can maybe sort through it and know what's gone as a worst-case scenario :-)) I'm not banking on this drive fully working or not eventually going completely dead on me, but since I can get to it here -- is there a way for me to re-add it to the array somehow? Or do I really want to just try copying the contents off it off onto a 'new config' that doesn't include this drive in the array? Assuming doing this essentially means that my 5tb drive (previously disk 3 -- the one that it recognizes but calls 'unmountable' ) is just toast and I won't be getting any data off it? Any good recommendations for how to copy files from that drive to the new array if I go that route? I'm more familiar with windows and its tools than linux, but reasonably comfortable working command lines :-). I assume I'd want some sort of tool that'd be able to handle errors it hits while attempting to copy files without completely bailing out on the copy (historically I've used an old microsoft tool called 'RichCopy' since it is multi-threaded - but open to other suggestions)
  10. Ok - so had started the parity copy -- and that's going and will take a while but is going. I've had very little activity for the most part writing to the array since my 8tb disk was removed from the array. If I was able to clone that to a new 8TB drive (my old parity drive) - can I then re-add that to the array somehow and do a rebuild for the 5TB drive that has failed? I know the parity wouldn't be completely valid -- but would it at least be able to partially recover what was lost with random corruption due to whatever was changed while that disk was offline? Or does it not work that way (i..e has to be an all-or-nothing thing)? Also - two other questions: 1) Can I attempt to mount that failing 8TB drive from unassigned disk without problems? 2) Is there a resource somewhere detailing steps to clone a drive? thanks again for all the time you've taken to answer my questions and attempt to help me. Especially given the time of year it is really appreciated - you guys are awesome. I appreciate the help you're given even though the troubles I'm experiencing are largely my own fault for not paying close enough attention to what was going on (though to be honest - when one drive failed - i ordered a replacement and I the other didn't actually fail until I turned the power off to attach my new replacement drive 🙂 - but still my own doing)
  11. Thanks @JorgeB Ok - I think I'm going to go the parity swap route (that was originally my plan for the 14 TB drive anyway). So - I follow those instructions to swap the parity drive. Do you happen to have a link describing the procedure for cloning the drive? Also - the drive to be cloned is not currently part of the array. Once I've cloned its contents onto the old parity drive - how do I go about adding it that clone back to the array? Also - just for clarification - I should be able to do the parity swap without hosing things up even though I am currently down 2 drives in my array? In theory -- then after cloning the defective disk and re-adding it to the array I would be able to then rebuild the other broken drive (onto another new drive) and end up with minimal data loss? Am I missing any steps or how this may play out? Also - if I use the 'mount' on that drive in the 'unassigned devices' - just to read files off of it before cloning - will that have potential to negatively affect anything?
  12. So - still haven't fully run that extended self-test. Keeps ending up with 'Interrupted (host reset)'. I don't know if this explains it/is related - but I do keep getting email notifications from Unraid while it runs that read like: Event: Unraid device dev1 SMART health [5] Subject: Warning [KOWUNRAID] - reallocated sector ct is 456 Description: ST8000DM004-2CX188_WCT0VALG (dev1) Importance: warning and Event: Unraid device dev1 SMART health [5] Subject: Warning [KOWUNRAID] - reallocated sector ct is 488 Description: ST8000DM004-2CX188_WCT0VALG (dev1) Importance: warning
  13. Got an 'Interrupted (host reset)' error. I've read I need to turn off spin-down timers -- is this that setting? (was already set to 'Never')
  14. Results from the short self-test: Num Test_Description Status Remaining LifeTime(hours) LBA_of_first_error # 1 Extended offline Interrupted (host reset) 00% 36925 - # 2 Extended offline Interrupted (host reset) 00% 36919 - # 3 Short offline Completed without error 00% 17972 - kowunraid-smart-20221223-1150.zip going to attempt an extended self-test now.
  15. Ok - should be showing up now (i think?) kowunraid-diagnostics-20221223-1143.zip Sorry for delay - was waiting for pictures/videos to copy off onto an external drive before rebooting.
  16. Think so (backup of irreplaceable stuff). I can still access some files -- so going to try to backup a 'pictures' folder (though i think most are already backed up amazon photos) as well as a videos folder. The majority of the data is backups of media (blu-ray rips, tv show rips, etc). Have backups of old hard drives (just in case -- most of it things I've not accessed in years an may never need to). So (Thankfully) at this point most data loss would just fall into the 'huge inconvenience' category instead of the 'now i need to cry that it is lost forever' category. I did disable spin-down (Best I can tell) in the settings tab. kowunraid-diagnostics-20221223-0845.zip
  17. So.. still no results on Disk 1 .. woke up at 4am and found it said it was interrupted or something: kowunraid-smart-20221222-2231.zip Tried starting it again --- (whis would be roughly 2 and a half hours ago.. maybe 3?) .. just got up and checked and says 'self-test in progress, 10% complete' still.. Opened a new tab attempting to look at the disk and am seeing this -- that because the test is in progress? Also - spare disks were mentioned in an earlier post. Currently I have a couple 4TB external drives and a new 14TB internal drive. if I need to pick up additional internal drives I can/will.
  18. Disk 3 failed already - attaching smart report. kowunraid-smart-20221222-2230.zip
  19. Thought I did have it set up to get emails - but I guess I either didn't get it, or didn't understand what the pop-ups were telling me. Just re-tested the email notifications in the setup - and looks like my authorization is failing now.. apparently need to re-set that up. (Looks like my gmail SMTP settings from a while back no longer work.. reading up on how to fix that now). UPDATE: generated a gmail app password and that seems to be working now. So - How can I go about attempting to rebuild disk 3? I mentioned earlier about Disk 1 and it wanting to treat it as a new drive -- I was unclear from your response what I can do about that.
  20. When attempting to re-start the array disk 3 was still in the same state as before best I could tell. Also - so far as Disk 1 goes - I'm unclear what I should actually try doing with that at the moment. Should I be attempting to click the 'Mount' button in the 'Unassigned Devices'? Also - hugely appreciate your assistance. Have had a sick feeling in my stomach the last several hours here trying to figure this out :).
  21. Tried re-checking all the connections to all the drives (unplugging/re-plugging them all in). Attaching latest diagnostics: kowunraid-diagnostics-20221222-2208.zip Screenshot after rebooting:
  22. kowunraid-diagnostics-20221222-2125.zip attaching diagnostics Smart report from 'drive 3': kowunraid-smart-20221222-2125.zip and smart report from the 'drive 1': kowunraid-smart-20221222-2021 - Drive 1.zip
  23. So -- further info ... for the heck of it - tried reconnecting the drive that wasn't working. It is now picking it up (seemingly) fine. However - when I attempt to re-assign it to disk 1 it seems to think it is a new drive. It says "Start will start Parity-Sync and/or Data-Rebuild." and "Stopped. Replacement disk installed" next to the array start button. Any way to say 'no - just use this as it is'??
  24. Ok - apologies for posting what seems like has been posted many times before. I have a 7 drive array with 1 parity drive. I noticed a couple days one of my drives failed - so I ordered a replacement. Replacement came today so I shut down Unraid through the GUI, unplugged my old drive (Disk 1) and plugged in a new drive. New drive is bigger than all other drives - so was going to attempt a parity swap (https://wiki.unraid.net/The_parity_swap_procedure). Before getting to that -- I noticed that a 2nd disk (i.e. not the one I removed) was now reporting as unmountable. First screenshot is from prior to reboot, second screenshot is of after: Struggling to figure out what I should do here. I tried swapping cables to the drive - no difference. I tried restarting the array in maintenance mode, went to the drive and checked the 'Check' button in the 'Check Filesystem Status' area. The results were: Phase 1 - find and verify superblock... superblock read failed, offset 0, size 524288, ag 0, rval -1 fatal error -- Input/output error I did a 'SMART short self-test' and it returned 'Completed without error'. What other diagnostics can I generate to post in order to try to figure out how to proceed at this point?
