Not sure why you would use the word unfair, but I am sure there was some research prior to them deciding on a price point. Email them and see what they say.

I use Kodi on my Nvidia Shield and love it. I too spin my drives down so there's a delay, but I can change that if I wish.

Oh I kind of remember how I fixed my fan speed being identified incorrectly. I changed some settings in the BIOS. I can't remember right now, but I will look in my servers bios and see if I can remember. It might have been changing the power management setting.

If you have yours fans connected to the motherboard headers that may be the alarm. I would check those first.
