  1. Thanks to all for the information...I'm trying the reiserfsck -–scan-whole-partition -–rebuild-tree /dev/md1 command now....crossing my fingers and hoping for the best! As for the page about Top 10 ways to lost data....I'm reading it carefully. And I'm revisiting my strategy....I think I'll hold onto my desktop USB drive for backing up my MacBook. Think I'll keep the unRAID just for the DVD's. Thanks again, this information has been a big help to me.
  2. but if I inadvertently reformatted 'disk1', can't it be restored with data from the parity drive? Isn't this what it's supposed to be able to accomplish if the data hadn't been reformatted, but instead had been lost due to drive failure, and subsequent drive replacement with a new 'disk1'?
  3. Hello, Like a thread from a few days ago, I also lost all of my data. Nearly new system, latest stable release, and after a couple of weeks running I added a 2nd data drive. After rebooting, I did something wrong and it started reformatting my 1st data drive. It isn't the end of the world, as most of the data consisted of DVD rips, so it's mostly time and effort lost, not irreplaceable data. However, eventually it will hold valuable irreplaceable stuff, and I can't make this mistake again. So, I captured a syslog, but the log appears to contain data only from today, April 18th....but all the 'damage' I did happened yesterday, the 17th. Is there a way to get syslog data from the previous date? Ideally, I'd like to figure out where I went wrong, so that I don't do it again. Thanks.
  4. I would like to install Avahi, but despite several pages of detailed How-to's, I'm clueless. Basically, I don't know how to install these packages. Do I use the Terminal in OSX? Or do I need to install some type of Linux inside of Virtual Box? I take it these items get installed on the flash that has the unRAID software on it? I'm sorry to say that I don't know a thing, not a single thing, about Linux. Being that I now have an unRAID server ready to play with, I'm guessing that it might be a good idea for me to learn some Linux basics, or else every little thing I try to do with it is going to take me 100x longer than the rest of the world.
  5. Thanks for the help...I hope that the steps become clearer once I actually download Virtual Box this weekend and take it for a spin... In the meantime, does the new 'virtual machine' exist on my Mac, or is it on the USB stick? Does the Linux ISO image come along with Virtual Box? Sorry for the dumb questions, I have led a very sheltered Linux and Windows-free life!
  6. Hello, I've ordered some good parts, and am looking forward to putting this thing together, but I have no access to a PC....am I dead in the water as far as making the USB drive? I have Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro, but after lots of reading and searching I still don't see how I can create the drive with OSX. Is there a link as to how to use the Terminal or some other creative means to do this? I could try to get someone to do it on their PC for me, but it seems that would be a hassle...wouldn't I need to repeat that every time there's some sort of update? Perhaps the best answer is to use Boot Camp, and buy the cheapest OEM copy of Windows that I can find, and just consider it part of the cost of doing unRaid business in an up til now Mac only environment? Thanks in advance.
