    I think I figured out the issue here.
     
    I am dealing with a value in my rtorrent config file:
     
    # Maximum number of open files rtorrent can keep open (you have to modify the system wide settings with ulimit!) (`set_max_open_files`) # network.max_open_files.set = 5000  
    I will leave this here so that anyone else who is confused can find the answer.
