  1. I can confirm also that just simply formatting a spare usb flash drive I had laying around and adding that USB device to my unRAID VM stopped the error messages for me.

    Same for me as well.

I have a Sandisk Ultra Fit and a Sandisk Cruzer fit both allocated to unRAID.

What people may be unaware of is ESX also reports 'Reset high speed USB' messages in /var/log/vmkernel.log until the messages stop in unRAID.

Correct, by the way I have those exact 2 USB's (One cruzer fit, one ultra fit) in my server as well :D .

I wonder if putting the flash on a usb hub would have the same effect.

  3. I think the pause button would be easy to implement...  The auto throttle might be more complicated..

Once the auto throttle was perfected then the pause might not be necessary...

The code already exists in the current md driver, borrowing that may be easier then pausing and restarting.

To pause and restart requires some kind of update to the superblock.

It will probably be easier to lift working code and retrofit it to the final desired functionality.

Tom's a smart guy. I've seen the auto-throttle in action with software raid1 and the md driver. It worked nicely and no one had to do anything.

Now having a minimum and maximum throttle like the md driver might be nice as well.

At that point you could set the maximum to be a very low value during waking ours and reset it for idle times.

    That worked well also.

  4. I use a few of the 64GB Sandisk Ultra in a USB 2.0 slots without issue.

    With UnRAID ??

If so, then clearly the size isn't the issue.

I think it depends on the motherboard/bios and USB port.

I use the 64GB Sandisk Ultra fit with a supermicro X10SL7-F and a HP Gen8 Micro server without issue.

Soon I'll be converting the the Gen7 Microservers to the Sandisk Ultra Fit (In the interest of size to eliminate the bulk of the card readers)

I've used the Sandisk Ultra Fit on Dell USFF 790s without issue as well.

  5. The Fractal Design R4 is quiet. I have it in my living room and cannot hear it. There is sound dampening material in it.

However the drive density is not there. Maybe one of the larger ones would suffice.

Eventually I plan to migrate off the Fractal R4 to a iStar based case similar to the limetech AV/4 case. Just not as nice as that one.

I started to migrating to the larger drives rather then increasing the amount of drives.

I also separated drives into some of the HP Micro Servers based on importance and space around my apartment.

  6. They are all using add-on controllers, none are on the on-board ports, they are all connected to 3 x SAT2-MV8 Raid cards. Which is why i am confused as to why the motherboard would be the issue... I did try using different ports, but i haven't tried to connect the SSD'd to the MOBO directly... Seemed like the better issue was to report the bug and try and see if they could do a quick patch or fix it in the next release....

My mistake, I must have missed that.

Perhaps try to isolate the issue and put them on the motherboard. (just to see).

  7. I strongly recommend putting a check in the box, for no screen updates during operations such as the parity check, especially if you have a low power CPU.  And close the webGui whenever you don't need it.

In SETTINGS > DISPLAY SETTINGS, there is an option near the bottom PAGE UPDATE FREQUENCY.

Options are Disabled, Real-Time, Regular, Slow

    I set mine to disabled.

Perhaps those who are having performance issues should check this setting and disable it temporarily.

Perhaps we need a hook into the smart monitoring system to either automatically expand the monitor window or disable it temporarily during parity checks. i.e. poll attributes.

For those who are having performance issues, perhaps setting this to some higher value, i.e. 86400 (for a day).

From what I remembered in another conversation, a poll for attributes causes the SATA channel to be flushed.

  8. Ratuken.com used to be Buy.com.  They are quite reputable.

They used to be. They no longer are reputable. They are a den for credit fraud and identity thieves.

Well its too late for me but thanks for the warning. I use a special card for online purchases so if something bad does happen,  it's not linked to my bank. I'll still have to fight to get the money back that gets stolen like anybody else would but at least the damage will be minimal.

    Wise move!

  9. Perhaps reach out to [email protected] and see if he can compile it for the running kernel.

Frankly, that's a pretty nice controller and probably too nice and/or advanced for unRAID usage.

There's no telling if you'll be able to monitor it via smart. (check with your linuix mint distro and see if smartctl can access the drives individually)

If the driver is not built in to unRAID, you're always going to be running into kernel vs module issues during an unRAID update.

The simpler the better with unRAID.

You can probably sell it for a good amount on eBay and get an LSI, flash it to it mode and be done.
