  1. I managed to solve this issue. For some reason my h420 was not set to HBA mode, even though I did set it to that using the "Runnig HPE SSA from an HP Service Pack for ProLiant(SPP) ISO image". Retrying this with a Linux Mint live disk according to the following two posts worked:
  2. Yes, I was indeed installing to an SD card, because my HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 has an internal SD card slot on the motherboard which I wanted to boot from. And yes I am aware of the caveats regarding this (reader GUID used). The issue above seems to be that the `make_bootable_linux.sh` script assumes device paths that follow the `/dev/sdX#` pattern. If one gives it a `/dev/nvme#n#p#` or `/dev/mmcblk#p#` it fails.
  3. I booted up an HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 with an Unraid USB drive. Only half of the HDDs are detected - the half on the P420i controller. The other half of the drives are on a P420. Both controllers are updated to the latest firmware I could find for this server, and both are set to HBA mode. Has anyone been able to get the P420 working in Unraid? I have enabled the kernel flags for RMRR relaxation. root@Lara:~# dmesg | grep 'Intel-IOMMU' [ 0.188646] DMAR: Intel-IOMMU: assuming all RMRRs are relaxable. This can lead to instability or data loss Dmesg lists both the P420i and the P420 with all their drives: root@Lara:~# dmesg | grep "hpsa" [ 25.151442] hpsa 0000:02:00.0: can't disable ASPM; OS doesn't have ASPM control [ 25.154285] hpsa 0000:02:00.0: Logical aborts not supported [ 25.154365] hpsa 0000:02:00.0: HP SSD Smart Path aborts not supported [ 25.195935] scsi host2: hpsa [ 25.200984] hpsa can't handle SMP requests [ 25.229961] hpsa 0000:02:00.0: scsi 2:0:0:0: added RAID HP P420i controller SSDSmartPathCap- En- Exp=1 [ 25.230062] hpsa 0000:02:00.0: scsi 2:0:1:0: added Direct-Access HP EG0300FCVBF PHYS DRV SSDSmartPathCap- En- Exp=1 [ 25.230158] hpsa 0000:02:00.0: scsi 2:0:2:0: added Direct-Access HP EG0300FCSPH PHYS DRV SSDSmartPathCap- En- Exp=1 [ 25.230251] hpsa 0000:02:00.0: scsi 2:0:3:0: added Direct-Access HP EG0900FCVBL PHYS DRV SSDSmartPathCap- En- Exp=1 [ 25.230345] hpsa 0000:02:00.0: scsi 2:0:4:0: added Direct-Access HP EG0900FCVBL PHYS DRV SSDSmartPathCap- En- Exp=1 [ 25.230439] hpsa 0000:02:00.0: scsi 2:0:5:0: added Direct-Access HP EG0900FCSPN PHYS DRV SSDSmartPathCap- En- Exp=1 [ 25.230532] hpsa 0000:02:00.0: scsi 2:0:6:0: added Direct-Access HP EG0900FCVBL PHYS DRV SSDSmartPathCap- En- Exp=1 [ 25.230626] hpsa 0000:02:00.0: scsi 2:0:7:0: added Direct-Access HP EG0900FCVBL PHYS DRV SSDSmartPathCap- En- Exp=1 [ 25.230722] hpsa 0000:02:00.0: scsi 2:0:8:0: masked Enclosure PMCSIERA SRCv8x6G enclosure SSDSmartPathCap- En- Exp=0 [ 25.231047] hpsa can't handle SMP requests [ 25.233575] hpsa can't handle SMP requests [ 25.239800] hpsa can't handle SMP requests [ 25.263209] hpsa can't handle SMP requests [ 25.268344] hpsa can't handle SMP requests [ 25.272478] hpsa can't handle SMP requests [ 25.278088] hpsa can't handle SMP requests [ 25.310677] hpsa can't handle SMP requests [ 25.314426] hpsa 0000:04:00.0: can't disable ASPM; 4. There is no tool to create the startup drive under Linux/Ubuntu. I'm therefore following the manual install method. It however fails on the make bootable script. $ sudo ./make_bootable_linux INFO: make_bootable_linux v1.3 INFO: The following device appears to be the unRAID USB Flash drive: /dev/mmcblk0p Permit UEFI boot mode [Y/N]: Y INFO: unRAID USB Flash drive currently mounted to /tmp/UNRAID_TMP_MOUNT, copying temporary installer files to /tmp/UNRAID To continue you may need to enter your admin password FAIL: Invalid block device /dev/mmcblk0p $ sudo bash ./make_bootable_linux INFO: make_bootable_linux v1.3 INFO: The following device appears to be the unRAID USB Flash drive: /dev/mmcblk0p INFO: Temporarily mounting unRAID USB Flash drive to /tmp/UNRAID_TMP_MOUNT Permit UEFI boot mode [Y/N]: Y INFO: unRAID USB Flash drive currently mounted to /tmp/UNRAID_TMP_MOUNT, copying temporary installer files to /tmp/UNRAID To continue you may need to enter your admin password FAIL: Invalid block device /dev/mmcblk0p I looks like the script detects the device as `/dev/mmcblk0p`, omitting the partition number 1 after it.
