  1. Suggestions I've received so far:

    1. Disable Secure Boot Control

    2. Try different USB ports

    3. Try a USB 2.0 Port -> Problem: only have these on the front. Solution: get some sort of internal header like this https://www.amazon.com/SinLoon-Female-Motherboard-Header-Adapter-Dual/dp/B0878S6BD5/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=internal+usb+header&qid=1695556674&sr=8-4

I am currently clearing a disk and have some operations going but if things settle down I will shut down and give this another go. Really want to get this problem solved so I can move the KB+M and Monitor out of the basement.

  2. Hello,

I have googled and read posts about people with similar issues but their tricks are not working for me. Basically what the title says, when I safely restart via the dashboard nothing but a black screen displays and I can't reach the web UI from another machine. When I do a hard reset I get the UEFI Bios press F2/DEL to enter window which I can jump into. My motherboard is an ASUS TUF Gaming Z790-Plus WiFi D4. My USB stick is a Samsung BAR Plus 64GB I used the unraid usb flash creator on windows and Allow UEFI boot was checked (it's defaulted to checked). The folder also appears to be named correctly, here is the root of the drive:

    image.thumb.png.755621525ddd2d5bc9986abd4c6428fe.png

On the front page of the UEFI BIOS the USB stick shows right up and you can select it and boot into it:

    image.thumb.png.36d483817e63962a1137ef12ed900750.png

In Advanced Mode which is really just the BIOS it's the only option you can select as a boot device:

    image.thumb.png.487cf5641cfef2b35622eb3c0b06916e.png

Fast Boot is disabled, I was really hoping that would do the trick but I still got stuck on the black screen after saving the change and restarting. I then had to do a hard reboot to get back to UEFI BIOS and select the disk to book things back up so I could check that folder name on the flash drive and make this post.

    Thank you!!!!

  3. Hello,

I accidently copied a bunch of files into sub directories when they are suppose to be a directory up. I tried to use Dynamix file manager to move them but it was doing a full copy and delete when the files were on the same disks:

    image.png.e9611c3abe24a4823038f04e76a3e68f.png

Above is an example of one file, when I did it originally I selected all files that were in the wrong place (many). I then tried Krusader to move the files but Dynamix had made folders where the files were to go and Krusader would not overwrite them. I manually deleted about 20 of the folders and Kursader moved everything instantly. I am now at a cross roads where I either wait for Dynamix because the "Overwrite existing files" option seems to get rid of the empty folders or manually delete a couple hundred folders and move instantly with Krusader. Is there another option? Why is Dynamix behaving differently than Krusader?

That is correct behaviour.     The split points are based on the size of the largest drive - not on percentage used.    It is as described in more detail here in the online documentation accessible via the ‘Manual’ link at the bottom of the GUI or the DOCS link at the top of each forum page.

Ah ok, I will read up. I was under the impression it was trying to split each drive in half and then 3/4 etc. Is this behavior fine or is there a more preferrable setting like most free method?

  5. Hello,

My disks were filling up nicely. 20TB drive filled to 10TB and then the next 20TB drive started to get files up to 10TB. However the next drive in the list, a 12TB, only filled up to 2TB before the system started writing back to the first 20TB drive. Here they are out of balance:

    image.thumb.png.32ca4115b8ce57f267883ae85e9c62f0.png

The share I am copying to has fairly basic settings. I think I followed the trash guide for hard linking.

To copy files I am queuing work with Dynamix File Manager.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  6. Hello,

I am getting close to "go live" with my stack and I've come across a lot of references to custom docker networks but the "how-to" I've seen just show adding the new network in settings and configuring it for your containers. I don't understand the benefit of this, it was mentioned that hostnames could then be used instead of IPs which would be nice but I'm also interested in security. I don't quite understand why each docker would have a different host name here, do they no longer share an IP? Wouldn't you still need to specify a port?

Right now I am using the binhex-sabnzbdvpn container. Would it be better to create a custom network with a VPN associated to it and use that indead of this container? Would I then need to somehow bridge that network to another customer network running the other dockers without VPN? I am currently using Nginx Proxy Manager which took a while to get setup and I want to make sure I understand what I am doing before I make any changes.

Also I configured my VPN to New York City because it was close, but I've read it's better to configure to somewhere with less traffic. Does distance not matter for VPN performance? How do I select an optimal location for it, I noticed my downloads in sabnzbdvpn seem slow.

Finally, I've seen mentions of vLANs. My understanding of these is that you'd set them up with managed switches / routers / APs so different devices could be on networks isolated from other devices. For instance you'd use a vLAN to keep your security cameras off the network. When this is referred to in the context of a docker network are they all just vLANs?

Any guides / documentation / videos around these topics would be much appreciated. I want to make sure everything is secure and things that need VPNs are using them correctly before the big server reveal party!

    Thanks!

  7. I did not, it was set to Auto:
    image.png.3033d8e108f1c62c6b9f76e3a5d4a6de.png

Great call!!!! I read the documentation and gave it a shot. It's flying now:

    image.png.27e81b7ff52481900e12e8d3a3b962a4.png

I was concerned about the 68 MB/s because I saw writes going much faster on my parity drive during the initial parity build. The disk being written to is a Exos X20 which was advertised to go up to 285 MB/s.

Thank you for the help! Should I set this back to auto once my initial data transfer is complete and I'm less concerned with write speed? Seems like the smart thing to do so every disk doesn't need to spin for a write.

  8. Hello,

I am transferring large media files from an Unassigned Device to the Array (a User Share) and things started out fine, ~180 MB/s, but have significantly dropped down to around 70 MB/s. Is there anything I can do to improve disk to disk transfer speeds? Any reason why this happens? I am using Dynamix File Manager to transfer the files.

    Hello!

I just migrated from binhex-sabnzbd to binhex-sabnzbdvpn and download speeds are 1000x less, dropped from around  500 Mpbs to 500 Kpbs. I am using Pravado VPP's OpenVPN configs.

Also, these warnings stated popping up when I switched versions:

API key incorrect, Use the API key from Config->General in your 3rd party program: 192.168.0.129 [Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/116.0.0.0 Safari/537.36]

I could use a pointer to help figure out what is causing the bottle neck. I don't see anything in Pravado about throttling speed like this.

    Thanks!

Switched to mullvad vpn and configured it for wiregaurd and it's fast again! Also the warnings went away which was a nice bonus.

  11. Ok everything looks great now. Here is a recap so I can mark it resolved:

    1. I followed this guide -> Unraid & Windows 10 SMB Setup.pdf (which I will attach below) to set up SMB so I could access it from windows 10. I have some shares that are Public and some that are Secure with a user set in windows to match the user configured for the secure shares. Neither show up. I am able to get to \\Tower\ but no folders how up there. When I try to go to one of the shares, \\Tower\Movies\ for example it tells me "Windows cannot access \\Tower\Movies\.

This needed a config change to the share so "Export" was enabled.

    2. I can't figure out how to configure a user share to include a cache pool that moves it's contents to the array nightly. I watched some SpaceInvaderVideos for setting stuff like this up and it looks like unRAID 12+ changes the settings around a bit and they no long match the tutorials. This documentation goes in depth how to set it up for unRAID 11 or earlier: https://docs.unraid.net/unraid-os/manual/shares/user-shares/. It states "They achieve the same functionality as the settings available in 6.12 but are presented differently." but it does not present those differences. Hopefully I am just overlooking something, any updated documentation for this would be great.

They changed the way these are configured between 6.11 and 6.12. Any Cache with an Array as secondary will respect the mover schedule and the direction of files being moved is specified in the share.

Quickly hit a third snag. Installed the Unassigned Devices plug in but I can't figure out how to get this external 4TB disk to mount:

There is a bug in the UD plugin where you can't mount a drive that has a partition with no file system. This will be fixed soon but can be worked around by Detaching and Re-Attaching the Unassigned Device with Auto Mount enabled. On reattach it should auto mount. You can also access drives in this state inside of a Windows VM.

Ugh well my workaround is a bit slow. For some reason my Windows 11 VM isn't mapping the unRAID path I configured here:

There is more to it than setting the config right (as I've seen is the case with setting up most things up). I posted a thread above that explains how to set it up.

  12. 13 minutes ago, dlandon said:

A work around for this situation is to set the "Auto Mount" switch on, detach the disk, then re-attach the disk.  The disk will be mounted.  Unmount it by clicking on the second partition 'Unmount' button.

Thanks for the workaround! When you say detach do you mean unplug the USB and plug it back in or is there a way to detach from the UI? My other disks shouldn't have empty partitions as I formatted them myself before using them for Media but I have one more WD external to migrate. I guess I could always detach it by connecting it to my Window's VM and then re-attach so auto mount works by shutting the VM down (like what happened with this first drive).

That statement is true as it refers to new files.   If primary storage is below the Minimum Free Space value then primary storage is bypassed and written directly to secondary storage.    For files on the cache pool then the mover setting is relevant.

Got it. So any cache pool with a secondary drive will move files in the direction that is configured via "Mover action" when the mover is ran. Normally this would be from cahce -> array at 3:40AM but I guess if you wanted to clear files off of the array you could switch the direction.

Another update, I was able virtiofs drives to show up in my windows 11 VM by following these steps:

  14. 2 hours ago, itimpi said:

The steps required for 2) are in the 6.12.0 release notes but can be summarised as

    • Go into the settings for the share in question.
    • Set the pool to be primary storage (i.e. place files are preferentially initially written)
    • Set the array to be secondary storage
    • Set move direction to be cache->array.

Turning on the Help built into the GUI gives information on the various settings.

Thanks for the tip! I think help comes on by default and is actually what caused my confusion. The little tip says that secondary storage is where things write to once primary storage is full but what I had read about was the ability to move things to the Array at 3:40 AM each night. Here is a picture of what I am talking about:

  15. Ugh well my workaround is a bit slow. For some reason my Windows 11 VM isn't mapping the unRAID path I configured here:

    image.png.f37c48359af0aa13cc5eae92594d100f.png

Maybe my expectations are off but I read that this would map /mnt to C:\UNRAID. At least I figured out SMB and can access the shares over the 'network'.

Also now that Windows has it's hands on the disk I no longer see it in Unassigned Devices. I guess that's to be expected.

  16. Found a workaround for not being able to access my external drive as an unassigned device. Was a long journey but I was able to setup a Windows 11 VM and pass the drive to it (which was a bit confusing as it was in some settings about boot drive priority).

I also moved that request for help over to the official thread for the plugin itself. I'd still like to be able to use UD for external drives as I have another and it's a lot larger.

That just leaves question #2 about documentation for configuring User Shares to have cache pools that let you quickly transfer data and then migrate the data to the array when things are idle. Very confused by the documentation and how simple it seemed to set that up in version 6.11 and earlier. I must be missing something obvious.

Enough progress for one night, I'll check back in the morning. Thanks!

  17. Hello. I hope this is the right place to ask for some help. I have all three unassigned devices plugins installed and here are the versions:

    image.thumb.png.6e0253279856eec0c4357f9c98d32572.png

I am trying to copy data from an 4TB external HDD which is connected via USB to the motherboard. It appears like this in unRAID:

    image.thumb.png.e7ad907360d4d606352c644a17c34c93.png

The guides I watch seem to have a mount button for the devices they want to access in the disks folder. I'm not sure why that is not the case for this, it is formatted NTFS.

    Thanks!

Update - I was able to get this drive to show up in a Windows 11 VM. This is not ideal but works as a workaround. The drive moved to historical devices when that happened. I will need to look up what that means:

    image.thumb.png.6c9efed236fa6efbb07a4fc3247042a8.png

Update 2 - The drive has mounted itself now that the VM is shut down. This is odd but desirable.

  18. Hello!

I finally got unraid going on my server (v6.12.4) and am taking on the steep learning curve. I have two things I am getting stuck on but everything else is going very well.

    1. I followed this guide -> Unraid & Windows 10 SMB Setup.pdf (which I will attach below) to set up SMB so I could access it from windows 10. I have some shares that are Public and some that are Secure with a user set in windows to match the user configured for the secure shares. Neither show up. That's all for now but I'm sure there will be more...

    Thanks!

  19. Since this is post has died down I will wrap up what my takeaways. Big thanks to everyone who provided feedback!

    1. Should I be using 1 or 2 disks for Parity?

Yes, better safe than sorry and I have the space.

    2. Should my Parity drives be plugged directly into my motherboards SATA ports or is the HBA fine?

Doesn't matter, use mobo until you need more ports and then add the HBA.

    3. Should I pre-organize my data before the transfer?

I have organized my library according to these guidelines: https://support.plex.tv/articles/200381043-multi-version-movies. It took 18 hours for my automated process to run and group/move/rename all of the movies but I should be collision free for the migration. I read in another post that this setup doesn't work great with *arrs because they only support keeping the highest quality version of a media file, they don't support multi-versions like Plex. I will cross that bridge when I come to it.

    4. Should each video file be in it's own folder?

Yes, see #3 - I have already organized them into their own folders based off of Plex guidelines.

    5. How much do I need to worry about User Shares and Split Level configurations?

Using user shares for different types of files seems like a good idea. I will start with Movies, TV Shows, and Photos. I don't need to worry about split level as much because I have large drives and none of my media is multi-part files.

    6. Will using Krusader to copy files unbalance the drives? Should I use Midnight Commander instead?

Dynamix File Manager is another alternative to check out. Unclear if Krusader has poor behavior for a large transfer. Wil do more research before the initial migration. Data will be transferred from unassigned NTFS drives formated in Windows (some external) to the array and once the transfer is complete the drive will be precleared and added to the array.

    7. Is having two 2x2TB Raid 1 Cache Pools a bad idea?

Good idea but do not use the cache pool during the initial data transfer because it will just fill up. Will see how configuration looks like when I go to set things up. Hopefully it is straightforward to add a Raid 1 cache pool and stop things from hitting it before the array temporarily.

Thank you for the help! Any additional feedback would be great. I'll post my build in the show off thread once everything is done.
