I'll get right to the point and put commentary after. Two ideas how I envision this feature could work: Basic version: Plug new USB into unraid server Click backup and transfer license in Unraid GUI Select new USB, process runs Shutdown and remove old usb Power up and everything is happy Complete version: Plug new usb into unraid server Click backup or setup backup on schedule in GUI Second GUID is somehow recorded as backup Second USB remains as backup until boot failure on primary USB ?? day grace period to transfer license (or automatic license transfer) Commentary: I believe the basic version could be implemented very easily and would greatly facilitate ease of upgrading failed or too small USB drives. I recognize the 'complete version' would require some reworking in the licensing automation, which would require more work. The 'basic version' would not. Every other drive in the cache or array is capable of redundancy; naturally redundancy should be extended to the boot USB. Edit: I know there are some other topics that have similar ideas. I read through a few but did not find one that had a complete layout.

I had the same problem... bought a Verbatim USB 16 GB drive (all metal, USB 2 for heat dissipation as some videos recommend)... no GUID bought another 32 GB same version of the drive and USB creator tool shows a GUID. I am currently running on a 2 GB freebie USB drive I got from an IT conference over 10 years ago because it was the only one in my drawer that registered a valid GUID when I originally installed Unraid. I have read all over, but cannot figure out how to check GUID for the manual install method... Is it just manually install, turn it on, then try to license it and see if it works? I don't want a bunch of hate my way... but I really hate the USB GID licensing scheme because of the hunt and peck with USB drives these days. (I figure if I don't say it, the longer it is likely to last before someone finds a better way.) This makes me want to tape a second USB drive (known good GUID) inside my case for use down the road so I'm not hunting around again for a good USB while my server is down. I wish they would at least keep the original USB GUID in your account and not blacklist it in case you have to revert.

Thank you all. Yes, preclear signature was valid after step 3. Stopped during pre-read of pass 2 and everything started fine. Thanks again!

I have searched but couldn't find this specific question, apologies if it's already been answered somewhere. New to unraid, but not new to IT. Bought three used server HDDs (12TB) and took advice from someone to run more than 1 pass in preclear. I'm 45 hours in and now willing to risk 1 pass in preclear. (In reality, pre-read, zero, and post-read means 2 read and 1 write pass of the entire drive.) Currently 45 hours in and almost done (each drive is at: 85%, 65%, 65%) with the post read on the first pass... I am guessing that after the first pass while in the second pre-read, I could cancel the operation and the disk will be fine. Unless there is any way to alter the number of passes, but since this is just a GUI on a script, I'm guessing not. So, the question is: Can I cancel a multi-pass preclear during pre-read of a second pass and be just fine to add to the array? (meaning I don't mess up the signature etc.) Thanks!
