    Thank you all for your time and support. It was my DNS entries. Once I corrected those following bmartino1's suggestion, the upgrade flew through.

    Good question. I am successfully able to ping Google's DNS from the command line and execute curl from the command line to google.com, so I'll say the answer is "yes".
