  1. Observed behavior: When the web GUI is accessed, the domain.cfg is rewritten to. This seems to occur just after the login. Infrequently, this also happens when clicking to a different page within the web GUI, such as clicking on "Dashboard" or "Main" tabs, but usually the domain.cfg is rewritten only just after login. There are no apparent changes to domain.cfg in the process. VM's are disabled and has never been set up. (I am assuming that domain.cfg pertains to VM's based on the file contents.) How to reproduce: log in to Unraid web GUI. Observe that domain.cfg file time stamp is updated immediately. Expected behavior: domain.cfg is only written to when changes are made to VM configuration. Unraid version 6.8.3. babel-diagnostics-20201227-1757.zip
  2. I noticed that domain.cfg is being regularly written to. I assume this is associated with the VM Manager, but I have VM's disabled. I tried deleting "domain.cfg", but upon reboot, it is restored to the defaults and the constant writes continue. There are no ill effects, but this seems to go against the general intent to avoid unnecessary writes to the USB. Anyone else notice this or have any suggestions? I found this other thread, but no solution was posted:
  3. I love that expanding the storage pool does not require more than one drive change or addition at a time. I would like to see a plugin that helps to migrate the cache drive more easily. The cache drive is being asked to do more and more (due to dockers) but isn't so easy to expand. I realize there is a procedure for this, but I'm looking for something more simple.
  4. Here's what I have: - 2 parity disks - 4 data disks Here's the situation: - One of the data disks show 4 read errors. - There are no SMART issues on any of the disks. I have run an Extended SMART as well and all of the disks are showing no issues, including zero reallocated sector counts or pending sectors. - A full parity check showed no errors. I'm going ahead and replacing the data disk with the read error, but I'm wondering if anyone else has any other explanations or things I should check for.
  5. Can you recommend one with 6 bays? I can't seem to find a summary to work from and my trial and error method is not working too well so far.
  6. I'm curious about purchasing a used workstation or server and am curious what some of the latest recommendations are. For starters, what are some good recommendations for: 1) Single stream transcoding 2) 6 SATA or more 3) Xeon grade processor 4) Let's say no more than 5 years old
  7. I am interested in the suggestion for older workstations. However, each of those suggestions seems to have fewer than 6 bays for hard drives. How do you add lots of hard drives to one of those workstations?
  8. Thanks for the reply. I did not know those processors also supported ECC. Based on your information, I found the following which seems to work: Intel C236 - MSI C326M motherboard https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130928&cm_re=msi_c236m-_-13-130-928-_-Product - Intel G4400 processor https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117625&cm_re=intel_g4400-_-19-117-625-_-Product I believe the above meet all of my requirements: 1) ECC memory 2) Integrated graphics 3) 6 SATA ports Did I miss anything?
  9. I would like to use ECC memory and would like to determine what is a robust but relatively low cost solution. I use my Unraid only as a file server and do not use any dockers or transcoding, so my overall memory and CPU requirements are low. (I run just fine with a single core AMD Sempron and 1GB of memory.) My requirements: 1) ECC memory 2) Integrated graphics 3) 6 SATA ports From what I can see on these forums, two approaches are: Intel Xeon build - Intel Xeon E3-1225 v5 https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117612&ignorebbr=1 - SUPERMICRO MBD-X11SSM-F-O https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813183013&ignorebbr=1 AMD Ryzen build - AMD RYZEN 5 1400 https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113437&ignorebbr=1 - ASUS Prime X370-Pro https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132964&ignorebbr=1 I would appreciate any help or description of any pitfalls in this search.
  10. I rebooted the server and the problem seems to have gone away. Weird! I'll call this issue resolved for now. Thanks johnnie.black
  11. Midnight Commander works and the disk size expands just enough to accommodate the new file. However, the mover script does not expand the disk size. This is terribly inconvenient. I don't want to copy a bunch of dummy files just to increase the drive size. Is there some other way to expand the allocated space? I'm about ready to abandon BTRFS and go back to Reiser.
  12. I actually filled it up with data and got a disk-full warning. It is a 1TB drive, it shows 459gb as allocated and I filled it with 458gb of data. Is there something that I need to do to force BTRFS to allocate more space?
  13. I have been experimenting with converting a data disk from ReiserFS to BTRFS with a 1TB drive. I am finding that after formatting the 1TB drive for BTRFS, it is only showing 459GB as available. Is there something unique about BTRFS that I am not understanding? More relevantly, is it inadvisable to use BTRFS as a data disk? Below is the BTRFS file system info: Data, single: total=459.01GiB, used=458.43GiB System, single: total=4.00MiB, used=64.00KiB Metadata, single: total=1.01GiB, used=516.22MiB GlobalReserve, single: total=512.00MiB, used=0.00B
  14. I noticed that USB Print Server was added in version 4.5.1 (http://www.lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Release_Notes#Changes_from_4.5_to_4.5.1). However, I can't seem to find any official documentation on this. Is this the same implementation as this thread: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=2888 ?
  15. I corrected the original post to remove the HPA comment. I had two drives in RAID1 on an Intel mobo. I killed this RAID and used one of these drives as a cache drive and put the other in storage. Upon further inspection, the other drive (which has never seen this Asus mobo) has the same HPA. I assume that this is the Intel RAID HPA.
  16. Please provide whatever information about HPA on ASUS you have. This is the first I've read about it and having an ASUS board I'm really concerned. If you look in the log, it is for a miniscule amount anyway. I know very little about the Express Gate (Splashtop). I had not disabled it in BIOS prior to installing everything. Had I done so, I'm sure this could have been avoided. Actually, does anyone know if the Intel disk controller writes any HPA for RAID configurations? This drive had been in an Intel RAID configuration and it is possible I am confusing Express Gate for Intel RAID as the HPA culprit.
  17. Wait for this to go on sale. I purchased this as a combo with a Sempron 140 for $87 delivered at Newegg.
  18. Asus M4A785-M Newegg link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131595&cm_re=M4A785-M-_-13-131-595-_-Product CPU Socket AM3/AM2+/AM2 North Bridge AMD 785G South Bridge AMD SB710 Ancillary equipment Processor: AMD Sempron 140 USB flash: Sandisk Cruzer Blade 4gb Power supply: Antec Neo Eco 400c Hard drives: 2 for data, 1 for parity, 1 for cache Unraid version: 4.5.6 Special Notes Set the USB device to "Force FDD" in the BIOS to boot the flash drive The motherboard can also boot a USB flash attached to the motherboard header, in case you want to mount the USB flash drive inside the case. (I took a standard USB bracket, like one of these http://tinyurl.com/35zwgjt , and unscrewed the PCI bracket part.) This board supports unbuffered ECC memory. (I did not test.) The front panel power button seems to correctly power down the server. Subsequent power on does not trigger parity check. syslog-2010-08-14.txt
  19. I would like to post my log in order to provide information on Level 1 compatibility for a motherboard. The problem is that I can't seem to find my log. I looked in tower\flash\logs, but it only goes to a certain date, which I assume is the day I installed Unmenu. When I go to Unmenu, it only provides the log for today. (I did reboot today.) How do I find the log for yesterday.
  20. Apparently, Symbolic Links is only in Windows Vista/7. Windows XP does not have Symbolic Links - it only has Junctions, which does not permit network drives. So there is no real solution to this other than to take a network drive and mount it to a letter drive, such as "P:". (If desired, one could then create a junction from "My Documents" to "P:".)
  21. You mean symbolic links (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa363878.aspx)? No I have not. Do you put this into a batch or do you use some other software? For example, I found these: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ntfslinkext/ http://www.pearlmagik.com/winbolic/ http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896768.aspx edit: does not work for network drives
  22. I found a peculiarity that I am hoping to understand in order to improve my understanding of Unraid and WinXP. Picasa can see files when: An Unraid share is mounted as a local drive (e.g. mount \\tower\pictures onto "P:"). Picasa does not see files when: A network shortcut is specified (e.g. "My Documents/Shortcut to pictures on Media Server (Tower)" ) Does Windows treat network paths differently from lettered drive (e.g. "P:") paths?
  23. Has anyone successfully shared media files to an Xbox360 (direct file sharing, no transcoding)? Here is my current set-up which is not entirely working: 1) Unraid hosts media files 2) A WinXP machine (named "Bob") has access to these media files (e.g. \\tower\media). Windows Media Player is configured to scan the network folder (\\tower\media) and share media files. I have also implemented the registry change to permit Media Player to enable remote content sharing. (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/faq/sharing.mspx) 3) The Xbox is able to see "Bob" on the network. I navigate to "Bob" and I am able to navigate the directory structure of the \\tower\media folder. Here's the problem: The XBox is seeing all the files as invalid and unplayable - everything from MP3 to JPG to WMV files. (Just to be clear, the Xbox360 was able to play all of these files when they were originally hosted locally on the WinXP "Bob" machine. Also, the WinXP "Bob" machine has no trouble with any of these files.) Anyone have any ideas?
  24. So when reading, the parity drive is used only when the data disk indicates errors. Is this correct? (I had thought the parity was always read to "check" the integrity of the data disk.)
  25. You can use ChkFlsh (http://mikelab.kiev.ua/index_en.php?page=PROGRAMS/programs_en) to benchmark and USB drives that you find in a dusty cabinet. Generally, 10MB/s is "OK" and 20MB/s is very good, although I wouldn't get too hung up on speed. You can also use that program to burn in your stick or to check for iffy sticks. As for brands, I work in a department where everyone (approx 60 people) has a Sandisk around their neck and I don't know anyone who had one go bad. Performance varies, though - the "Cruzer Blade" is the smallest, but I benchmarked 5MB/s write and 15MB/s read on Chkflsh, which is very slow for a modern device. I purchased a 2GB stick, but only because it's very hard to find anything smaller than that these days. I would use a 5-year-old Sandisk 512MB, but it gets fairly hot, which gets me worried.
