  1. Lastnight I upgraded from unraid 6.2.4 to 6.3.2. The upgrade went smoothly and everything appeared to work fine. I then proceeded to try pass through a new USB card and accidentally passed through the USB bus with the unraid usb. The system lost access to the USB drive and started throwing error messages. I rebooted to server and was able to re-enable the VM manager but I no longer had my cache drives displayed. The unraid server showed one of the two drives in my cache pool missing and the syslog made reference to sata failures. After replacing the SATA cables, power cables and moving the two cache drives to different SATA ports am finally able to get both drives to show up in the Unraid GUI. However, the drives go into readonly mode. 2. That was it. I switched the sata cable and re-seated the power connectors. Balance completed and my VMs start without hanging up. Thank you!
  3. I added a second cache drive to my array. The VMs froze and the system became unresponsive. I rebooted the server to restore access. The VMs are no longer accessible upon reboot. I tried removing the new cache drive but that resulted in the original drive showing unmountable. I reattached the new cache drive and rebooted and this is what shows. I seem to have lost all my VM images. btrfs filesystem show: Label: none uuid: bf7fd42c-678e-4e5f-9d70-ee7d17ec4738 Total devices 2 FS bytes used 243.77GiB devid 1 size 465.76GiB used 464.76GiB path /dev/sdk1 devid 2 size 894.25GiB used 246.74GiB path /dev/sde1 btrfs filesystem df: Data, RAID1: total=246.74GiB, used=85.80GiB Data, single: total=217.01GiB, used=157.74GiB System, single: total=4.00MiB, used=112.00KiB Metadata, single: total=1.01GiB, used=231.14MiB GlobalReserve, single: total=80.00MiB, used=0.00B edit - I removed the cache drives from the configuration and mounted the original 500G drive using unassigned drives plugin. I did notice that my available storage on the original drive went up to 700G with the addition of the new 960g drive. The only image that I really would like to restore is the mc2 one above. Am I out of luck? -edit I rebooted the system and added the two cache disks back into the unraid config. This seems to have gotten past the unmounted state and kicks off the balance process. 6. Running through the BIOS update (and the subsequent FRUSDRUPDATE) *will* reconfigure the BMC for your chassis configuration and allow the BMC to properly control the cooling domains and substantially slow the fans down. This is mandatory for proper operation. After the update fan noise is now very low when idling ill do some more testing next week to see how it does under load after I receive the stock heatsink that match the air duct. If things hold up these intel chasses with powersupply will prove to be a fantastic bargin. under $230 including shipping for case, redundant 750 ps, 8x3.5 hot swap drives, 2x heat sinks, air duct and 2 extra 8x2.5 hot swap bays. I don't see how you can beat it. I'm debating building a second one. Brian
  7. The same seller also has the redundant 750 watt chassis with 8x3.5" HSBP (with and without redundant chassis fans). But yeah, I'm going to load this new box with lots of 2.5" drives (won't be using unRAID), this'll be a dedicated ESXi box. I purchased the same chassis and air duct. I also bought the 8x3.5 tray separately for $40 and swapped out the 2 2.5 drive trays. I agree with the hairdryer description of the noise. I've only booted into the bios so far but setting the acoustic levels hasn't improved things. My 2600cp is on an ancient bios so I'm hoping that will make a difference. If not I'll swap out fans and put a different powers supply in .
  8. I've given up using AMD cards due to hdcp issues in Windows under virtualization. Opelec shouldn't have those issues but if you think you will create a windows VMware just stick with an Nvidia card. There may be newer or better cards but im using this msi 720gt with great success. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127805 Single slot 2g and low power usage.
  9. It never fails. Spend hours researching and looking for ways to do something and the simplest answer is provided in minutes. I tested in a spare system and found the drive was empty. Exactly what I needed to confirm. Thanks for the help!
  10. I pulled an old 1TB drive from the "junk drawer" that shows it is a reiserfs filesystem. when I try to view the contents in Ubuntu after it is auto-mounted it throws a message "This location could not be displayed." You do ont have permissions necessary to view the contents..." I've confirmed it is a reiserfs drive: ubuntu@ubuntu:/dev$ sudo blkid /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdc1: UUID="92ce110f-0c4b-423d-9711-bd6bde92a431" TYPE="reiserfs" Is there any way I can confirm if it was a data drive or a parity drive? Brian
  11. I wasn't blaming, just pointing out that a message that says the drive is mounted read only would be better than "share XXXXX is deleted" would help. Also, if ntfs isn't supported for the cache drive why did it allow it without notifying me. The drive was new to me and I wasn't even aware it was formatted ntfs. Raising clear errors make supporting a product easier for both the developer and user. Thanks again for the help. I wouldn't have seen the issue without it.
  12. The drive was originally formatted ntfs which was the issue. I took it out and plugged it into my pc and confirmed I could write to it. I then destroyed the primary partition and added it back to the Unraid server. Now everything works. A more descriptive error or warning when adding an ntfs cache drive would be nice. Thanks for the help.

  14. When I attempt to create a cache only share unraid pops a message saying the share has been deleted. Creating a non-cache only drive works fine. Unraid 6.q.6 pro key 2 1TB drives + 256G SSD for cache. I've setup two other servers and I'm never had this type of issue. Any ideas?
  15. IOMMU is supported and already working with Video and USB pass through on other VMs. The motherboard and CPU are GA-990FXA-UD7 / FX8350
  16. I've tried passing through both 05:00.0 and 05:00.1 without success. I've also tried 04:02.0 and 04:04.2 and nothing changed. The iommu group listing is from after setting up the following in the syslinux.cfg file. append pci-stub.ids=8086:153b,103c:704b amd_iommu=on iommu=pt iommu=1 vfio_iommu_type1.allow_unsafe_interrupts=1 pcie_acs_override=downstream initrd=/bzroot the one thing I didn't quite get intially was the values to put in pci-stub.ids. Initially I only put 8086:10bc but later added 103c:704b based on running lspci -knn which showed two ids that might be an issue. 05:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Intel Corporation 82571EB Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Copper) [8086:10bc] (rev 06) Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company NC364T PCI Express Quad Port Gigabit Server Adapter [103c:704b]
  17. I'm trying to pass through 2 ports on a 4 port NIC card. I've followed the instructions closely and can't seem to get past the message: Error: Requested operation is not valid: PCI device 0000:05:00.0 is not assignable I'm trying to pass through the NIC because of an issue running KMTTG under a Windows 8.1 VM. KMTTG is a tool that downloads video files from a Tivo and then re-encodes them. This process has worked very well under my old ESXi/Unraid config. However under Unraid6/KVM processing hangs up when using a share on Unraid as the target for the files. If I point the target directories to the c: drive on the VM it never fails. If I point to a share on the host Unraid6 server or another physical unraid server it hangs/fails about 50% of the time. The problem appears related to a network or samba issue but I don't see how to confirm. My next troubleshooting attempt is to passtrhough a NIC and take the KVM network out of the picture. lspci output and iommu group information: root@Unraid6:~# lspci -knn ... 03:00.0 PCI bridge [0604]: Integrated Device Technology, Inc. 18. I found my solution to the hdcp issue. Don't use an AMD video card. I purchased a Nnvida GT 720 and everything works perfect now. Brian
  19. Is it possible to playback bluray disks on a VM with a video card passedthrough to the VM? I keep getting a message stating the video driver isn't compatible. I'm using MyMovies and would love to replace multiple WMC machines with a VM on my unraid server. So far everything outside of Bluray playback works. I'm using a Radeon 5400 passed through to a windows 8.1 VM and Power DVD 15 playback software. I know I can rip the movie to a file and playback that way, however I'd like to be able to use the iso's I've already ripped without having to convert them. Brian
  20. Solution: When all else fails try copying files from a different PC. It appears my issues were with the PC I was using to copy files from. I tried another PC and I'm getting 44MB/s write speeds. My Unraid server was not the issue. I'm stumped. I recently had a drive get marked disabled and I replaced the drive with a new one and it rebuilt successfully. I then ran a parity check and disabled write corrections. Everything checked out fine. Once done I added another drive that passed 2 preclear runs and expanded the array. Everything again appeared to be fine. Now the strange part. Write speeds have dropped to 3MB/s. I was getting 40MB/s+ before the original drive got marked disabled. My original configuration had the cache and parity drives on the motherboard SATA port and the 6 data drives on an IBM M1015 with RES2SV240 port expander. I've since tried taking the RES2SV240 expander out of the configuration and moved the parity drive directly to the the IBM M1015. The speeds are still less than 3MB/s. I've also tried copying files directly to the cache drive (still on the MB SATA) and speeds are the same. To see if this was network related I tried copying files off the unraid server and I'm getting 70MB/s. What can I do to diagnose the problem further? Brian

  22. I'm late to the discussion but I'd point out an advantage I've found with Windows Unraid VMs vs ESXi VMs. In ESXi I was never able to get HDCP working correctly when passing through a PCI video card. The only way i could get things to work was to turn off hardware video acceleration. So far in my testing of Unraid Windows VM's I have no such issue. I've successfully setup 3 VM's with video and usb passed through. I successfully did all this in less than a quarter of the time it took for me to setup something similar in ESXi (could be because I understand more now that I setup ESXi.) Also, the hardware support seems much more flexible with Unraid's KVM including allowing for much better passthrough of onboard USB based on address. ESXi was easier to identify devices to passthrough, however if it didn't recognize the device you couldn't do anything with it. So far Unraids KVM solution allows me to pick any pci devices to passthrough. Shockingly I have a choice of 5 distinct USB pci buses i can passthrough on my motherboard. No more extra USB3 pci for me in my new configuration. ESXi does give you much more control over the system from the gui which I will miss. I'm going to try out ESXi 6 once I finish moving things from my current main Unraid server. If it solves my issue with HDCP I may go back but for now Unraid KVM seems to be a better solution for me. 23. Unraid 5.0 - Pro I have a disk that reported offline for weeks. I replaced the drive and rebuilt using parity information and the drive now reports online. However, when I try to delete any files on disk I get permissions errors from Windows and when I telnet into the unraid server and try to delete manually the drive reports it is read only. I've run reiserfsck and I get a message saying to use the --rebuild-tree flag. Every file I've accessed on disk2 appears to be fine. What should I do next? Do you want to run this program?[N/Yes] (note need to type Yes if you do):Yes ########### reiserfsck --check started at Mon Sep 1 22:54:11 2014 ########### Replaying journal: Trans replayed: mountid 57, transid 171494, desc 6308, len 1, commit 6310, next trans offset 6293 Trans replayed: mountid 57, transid 171495, desc 6311, len 1, commit 6313, next trans offset 6296 Trans replayed: mountid 57, transid 171496, desc 6314, len 2, commit 6317, next trans offset 6300 Trans replayed: mountid 57, transid 171497, desc 6318, len 1, commit 6320, next trans offset 6303 Trans replayed: mountid 57, transid 171498, desc 6321, len 1, commit 6323, next trans offset 6306 Replaying journal: Done. 24. Sorry to open up a very old thread but I wanted to get some final advice. I was fortunately able to restore all but a few hundred pictures from backups on my computer and a second unraid server. I used a recovery tool on my windows server "Raise Data Recovery for ReiserFS V5.2 and it allowed me to confirm what was on the drive. However, all the jpg, DVD VIdEO_TS folders, and zip files report invalid or corrupted. The interesting thing is mpg files and the vobs in the video_ts folders are all playable. I get the impression that something at the start of all the files are messed up. Could the MRB starting on sector 64 cause this? Is there any way to check how it is set and to set it the other way to see how the drive behaves? If anybody can spare some time to help me out I'd greatly appreciate it. Brian
  25. Thanks for the encouraging feedback. I sent an email to Tom on Saturday but I haven't heard back yet. By having the drives sit unused at least I'm not making things any worse :-) Brian
