  1. Thanks - the drive doesnt seem to me making it to unraid. I can see it in the idrac and bios but nowhere else. I thought id found it using sg_map, but it looks like it was showing the backplane (BP13G+) and not the drive? lsscsi.txt
  2. Hi, I've happily been using the 4no. 1.2tb SAS drives that came with my Dell R530 - No problems at all. I picked up a fifth drive (matching part number etc) that isn’t Dell branded and the server refuses to make it available as a physical drive? Standard SATA drives are detected without issue so I assume its something on/in the new drive that’s causing it... I swapped the H730 back to RAID mode, but it made no difference. Any pointers to help me resolve this please?
  3. Wow, Unraid sure has broken free of being a storage system that utilised old random hard drives! So many things to learn/relearn
  4. New hardware & drives - only the usb stick is original.
  5. Long story short - purchased my license back in 2009’ish and used Unraid till about 2013/14. Moved to a Synology unit as it was family/user friendly. Skip to yesterday and me watching an Aussie youtuber using Unraid to run VMs and docker - I was searching for Proxmox guides, for a Dell server I’d got off eBay, and ended up blowing dust off my old Lexar Firefly stick. One licence refresh later and my server is building its parity drive!
  6. Ah, I thought I had but it doesn't appear to have saved when I exited the bios Write speeds are now a steady 34MB/s Thanks for the replies folks! J
  7. Hi All, I've set-up a HP N40L to act as an off-site backup to my Synology box, but am experiencing really poor write speeds during local testing - Using midnight commander I am only seeing 15MB/s on disk to disk transfers! Version 5.0-rc11 Disks are 3no. 3tb WD Reds (1no. parity & 2no. storage) and 2no. 1tb Samsung F2 (1no. storage & 1no. cache) which have all seen previous action and performed much better. BIOS is modified and adjusted as per the guides on the net. hdparm giving me read speeds of 150 MB/s. Parity sync and new writes only hit 25MB/s So, is this just a limitation of the hardware or should I be seeing faster writes? Its been awhile since I used unraid but I'm sure it was quicker than this! Many thanks, J 130311-214800_syslog.txt
  8. Hi Joe L. Apologies, not shooting the messenger at all. I'm not a Linux guru by any measure, so please forgive my ignorance I had experienced 100% reliability using 10 of these drives until I started using unmenu. I'm assuming that I am calling the 'identify' command whilst I'm fumbling around unmenu and triggering the fault? I have already contacted Samsung to advise them of this issue... I just hope that they are prepared to do something about it! Cheers
  9. Mmm, I think I may have had a similar problem with Samsung HD103SI drives Recently started using unmenu 'mymain' to check write/transfer speeds whenever I send data to my server, and (by coincidence) I've gone thro' a bunch of HD103SI drives! I had put it down to a faulty batch of drives, but now I'm not so sure, I'm not blaming umenu... but simply pointing out the link. AFAIK, unmenu seems to work ok with other HDD brands???
  10. Hi, thanks for the heads-up on the X-case product. Can anyone recommend a motherboard please? It looks like I will need a minimum of 3 pci-e slots to take 3 AOC-SASLP-MV8 Thanks again.
  11. Hi all, My own server (based around a P5 VM-DO) has been quietly ticking away and gobbling up movies and music for many moons and I'm very very happy with it I took it to work this week so I could demo some new media systems, and my colleges were so impressed, they asked if I could build one to put in our rack at work! Now, unraid has moved on quite a bit from when I first built my server, and most of the components that were 'stable' are no longer available. So..., could one of you kind souls (that enjoys specifying ) please recommend a list of components that are currently stable, available and shippable to the UK? Requirements: It needs to be a rack mount case 4-5 U 20+ drives would be nice. It needs to be easily upgradable i.e. backplanes, hot-swap etc. All add-on cards etc. will be purchased now so we don't have to worry later on. It will need UPS protection (are these supported now?) I haven't been given a budget, but please try to keep it in the spirit of unraid I appreciate that this is all in the forum & wiki... unfortunately I just don't have time to read thro' it all and pick out the meat from the bones. Thanks in advance for any help!
  12. Nice one! Thanks a lot for this. I will give it a whirl when I get back later.
  13. I've just given beta 13 a spin and noticed this line (4th one) in my syslog regarding the network adapter: Dec 7 12:33:52 Tower kernel: e1000e: Intel® PRO/1000 Network Driver - 1.0.2-k2 Dec 7 12:33:52 Tower kernel: e1000e: Copyright © 1999-2008 Intel Corporation. Dec 7 12:33:52 Tower kernel: e1000e 0000:00:19.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 20 (level, low) -> IRQ 20 Dec 7 12:33:52 Tower kernel: e1000e 0000:00:19.0: pci_enable_pcie_error_reporting failed 0xfffffffb Dec 7 12:33:52 Tower kernel: e1000e 0000:00:19.0: setting latency timer to 64 Dec 7 12:33:52 Tower kernel: e1000e 0000:00:19.0: irq 27 for MSI/MSI-X Does it look like immanent hardware failure? I will go back to an earlier version and check but I'm sure its new... M/B is the P5B VM-DO with Intel Gigabit. Cheers
  14. Hi, I have quite a large collection of Movies & TV Shows that I originally stored in .iso format. For one reason or another I now want to revert to folders with .vobs etc. Is there a way I can unrar/unpack the .iso on the server? At the mo' I've been copying the .iso files to a local machine, using winrar to unpack them before sending back to the server :'( ...I know you can mount an .iso but I was hoping for a way to do a batch at a time. Thanks for any help on offer!
  15. NAS, What 'cataloging' are you referring too... the library files? (db files)
  16. Just dumped an .iso to my server and according to the performance tab on 'My Main' it was written at 37MB/s Pre beta 8 it would hover around 20/22MB/s Not sure if it makes a difference but my drives are all 95+% full.
  17. Thanks for the summary RobJ My server runs 100% fine (touch wood) but I would like to sort out the sleep/WOL issues I'm having. There doesn't seem to be anything in your summary that effects me so I may give 4.5 b6 a whirl and see if it helps! Cheers
  18. Any chance someone could sum-up the issues with this beta or is it wise to stick with 4.4.2 for the mo'? Cheers
  19. I'm holding off on this at the mo'... Thanks to everyone who PM'd me expressing an interest
  20. Hi everyone, This isn't hardware related but I thought this would be the best place to post all the same. I want to upgrade to a PRO key and thought it would be worthwhile seeing if anyone wanted to split the $59 cost. You have to pay $59 if you have one key or two so someone else may as well join me if they want??? $29.50 each or £17.80 each if your on this side of the pond! Not a bad deal!! (This is especially nice if your spending £'s as the exchange rate to $'s is pretty horrible ) I'm not in a mega rush to do this so will wait to see if there is any interest BTW, Tom is cool with this
  21. Hi all, I'm ordering some other 'bits-n-bobs' on the internet and wanted to get my order value up so I can get free postage! I have added a 4gb OCZ kit to my basket but before I pull the trigger I wondered if it was worthwhile upgrading my RAM from 1GB? If I understand correctly, the latest builds of unRAID can now see more than 1GB... but do they use it? The Tower is used to store the usual: movies,music,pictures,back-ups etc and the only thing I run that isn’t standard is unMenu with the associated add-ons. The files are accessed from PCs' & XBOX's around the house via hardwire and wireless. I have never had any issues with 1GB (touch wood) but it would be nice to get faster write speeds (over 18mb/s) ...I don’t think the RAM can really improve these though can they? I did do a quick search but couldn’t find any thing specific... Thanks in advance! In case its relevant: Mobo: ASUS P5B VM DO - CPU: Celeron 440
  22. Thanks for the suggestion Matt! Unfortunately the disk is still write protected... I think it must be totalled :'( (I'm guessing it must have been removed before a write was completed) Cheers J
  23. Hi, Whilst recently trying to write to my sons PSP (it uses a SONY memory stick pro duo) I got an error saying that the drive was write protected??? The disk has no physical 'lock' so I guessed it must be a software issue... I plugged it straight into my windows box but was unable to format as it was giving me the same message! Then I had the brainwave of putting it in my unRAID tower I can see the drive as [sdk] but it still wont let me do anything to it (tried fdisk etc) My syslog has the following lines: Feb 1 16:06:33 Tower kernel: usb-storage: device scan complete Feb 1 16:06:33 Tower kernel: sd 0:0:0:3: [sdk] 7929856 512-byte hardware sectors (4060 MB) Feb 1 16:06:33 Tower kernel: sd 0:0:0:3: [sdk] Write Protect is on Feb 1 16:06:33 Tower kernel: sd 0:0:0:3: [sdk] Mode Sense: 03 00 80 00 Feb 1 16:06:33 Tower kernel: sd 0:0:0:3: [sdk] Assuming drive cache: write through Feb 1 16:06:33 Tower kernel: sd 0:0:0:3: [sdk] 7929856 512-byte hardware sectors (4060 MB) Feb 1 16:06:33 Tower kernel: sd 0:0:0:3: [sdk] Write Protect is on Feb 1 16:06:33 Tower kernel: sd 0:0:0:3: [sdk] Mode Sense: 03 00 80 00 Feb 1 16:06:33 Tower kernel: sd 0:0:0:3: [sdk] Assuming drive cache: write through It seems that the write protection is causing me an issue... so how do I remove it? (I'm hoping the stick isnt trashed as these have rocketed in price in the UK) I'm a Linux noob away from the unraid interface so please be gentle.
  24. Hi all, I've Just updated to 4.4 from 4.3 and my parity checks have increased from 45,000KB to 66,082KB! I'm running a celeron 440 with 1GB of ram plugged into the P5B Parity drive is a Samsung F1 750GB and the other 5 are a mix of 500GB & 750GB Samsung & Seagate. Thats quite a performance increase. Thanks for the hard work you folks all put into this!
  25. My only criticism of this case is the noise caused by the psu fan being mounted underneath. It seems to resonate off the hard surface its close too... your unlikely to put this down on carpet are you!! Im going to put half a squash ball under each foot to try and raise it up a bit and see if the noise changes.
