  1. I bought 3 5x3 caddies from xcase a few months ago and the stock fans were a touch too loud so swapped them out for silent fans (Coolink SWiF2-801 's ) and must say i'm impressed with how silent they are (quieter than my htpc built a couple of years ago LOL). On a side note the caddies only come with enough screws to mount the drives in the caddies and NOT to mount the actual cases themselves (even though you can use the same screws) - I e-mailed customer services as the screws are a specific type - too deep and you risk damaging the drives in the caddies to small and, well you get the idea - They sent me all the screws I needed FREE (this doesn't happen often LOL) - I can only say from my experience xcase have come up trumps and (touch wood) have had no problems with them.
  2. hey kode - after suffering another hard drive fail a couple of weeks before finishing server (I know - back up - back up)) I must juggle finances and get my server up and running so have to get a ups next week then populate it with a few drives to start - god help me if I lose my PSD files LOL Nice too see you around !
  3. great stuff - Overkill though ? - like I said in original post I only need the time it takes to shutdown array after 10-15 mins max - (an unlikely issue where I am in UK) - I don't need something that I can have on for a good while , just to be able to shutdown and restart array safely. I shall chew over these two suggestions - many thanks again.
  4. many thanks snowboard joe - this seems to do the trick - I will wait as you said to see if I get any replies from my side of the water, but is top of the list atm.
  5. Newbie user venturing into the world of unraid - so please be gentle. I'm in the UK and have just finished building a 15 bay server (atm with no discs) - I have used kill-a-watt to measure the wattage used on my motherboard with 1 disc in it (3tb wd red) - the output is 86 watts (a 3tb wd red at read write though is 4.4 watts) - taking into consideration at some point will have 15 drives this can max the wattage out at 66 watts + mb wattage of 86 giving a total of 152 watts if all drives are reading writing. Tech stuff over.Question: What ups would suffice without overkill (I just need it to shut array down after 15 minutes or so - so needs to be compatible with ups plug in) BTW I have a corsair builder cx750 and have heard that a ups without a pure sine wave can create a buzzing sound from the servers power supply - again this needs to be addressed as server is in 2nd bedroom. (btw I am on a budget - max £200) - If I can get away with less then great. (Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated - I dont want to buy something that is either too powerful or too expensive for it not to do the jobs I need it to do LOL)
  6. I am a fan of trays in my cages also. The 4 screws I need to remove do not bother me in the slightest The choices available in the UK are limited (unless ordering from the US) - i've managed to find the icydock and icybox and came across the istarusa cages by accident - the norco and supermicro I havent seen for sale in the UK (yet) - personally if I could get the norco's I would go with them - out of the three above that are available which is peoples preference? Also has anyone else corrupted/damaged hard drives by using a trayless 5x3 cage ?
  7. Just building my first server and came across these 5x3 cages (i'm in the UK) - anybody have any experiences with these http://www.servercase.co.uk/shop/components/hard-drives/hot-swap-drive-modules-sata-sas/3x5.25-to-5x3.5-sassata-6.0-gbs-trayless-hotswap-cage-isgand35silver/ the hard drive cages are the last items I need to buy (3 of them)and am split between these and the icybox 5x3 cages The first option seems to be a winner but would like some input before spending £300 plus !
