  1. Hello, I've got an Unraid server that I'm suspecting has a bad motherboard. It turns on for a few seconds then shuts down. Did some troubleshooting a while back and my best determination was that it was a mobo issue. With that in mind, is there a good doc / instructional somewhere that might address moving an existing Unraid server to new hardware? I've seen some threads where people are doing this but thread usually revolves around an issue they're running into. And often times diagnostics are requested from the prior/old server (which I won't have). Any first step suggestions?
  2. Ah shucks you're right. I didn't realize that the USB attached drive (which happens to be the same kind of drive as the one I shucked and am trying to install) shows up as an option for the array disks. Looks like I'll have to try out that kaplon tape. Thanks @johnnie.black

  4. So I shucked a couple of WD EasyStore drives to use for my server - one 8TB from 2017 and one 10TB from 2019. Here's what I did: I first plugged in the 8TB and it was recognized with no issue. I then proceeded to put in the 10TB but that was not recognized. I have an ASRock E3C224 which has 6 SATA3 slots - 4 by Intel and 2 by Marvell. The 8TB went on the last remaining Intel slot and the 10TB went on a Marvell slot. Thought maybe the Marvell slot is not configured or not working or something ... so I swapped the SATA cable from the 8TB to the 10TB. UNRAID recognizes that a drive is there, but says it's 8TB. So the questions that pop up are Is there some sort of limiter that's only allowing 8TB? Is UNRAID caching the presence of the 8TB I first put in? The drive ID value is the same no matter which drive I put in. Anyone with experience or thoughts? Thanks!
  5. I had a somewhat similar problem where my BIOS would use PCIE as priority (over integrated) but if I didn't have a monitor hooked up to the GPU, it wouldn't boot properly. I got a HDMI dummy plug (https://www.amazon.com/Headless-Display-Emulator-Headless-1920x1080-generation/dp/B06XT1Z9TF) and then things started working. But, I did also change my BIOS to default to the integrated GPU so not sure if that helped too.
  6. So I was about to try and go down the same road / build as you. Curious which threads you're referring to that says passover of multiple GPUs should work and how to do it? Question: What ROM are you guys referring to? Are there specific ROMs that need to be utilized for unRAID to be able to pass them through? Also, based on your comment, does that mean one GPU always needs to be dedicated to the unRAID server? but sounds like there's a way to run unRAID headless but not 100% feasible?
  7. Indeed they are. I haven't even used up my current drives (only 3). Though I've played with the idea of adding a cache drive and the additional bay options might be nice. Luckily for me, WAF has a pretty good high tolerance, lol. 48 would be plenty! But can't justify paying that kinda money for 12TB drives (didn't even realize they made those).
  8. I was a little hesitant on ryzen but by some comments, it seemed like there was only the one issue with disabling the C6 state. Though I can't say that I don't have a small bit of concern in the back of my mind that would likely be eliminated if I just went Intel. I won't be doing all 3 at the same time... just need the ability to do all 3. If I understand SLI correctly, it's sharing of workload between GPUs? That wouldn't be necessary as each GPU would be working on their own separate task. I just need to make sure that a single VM can detect all GPUs.
  9. Good point. TBH I wasn't really thinking about the case and just throw on a standard one. I changed it to a full tower just for cost purposes but will look into the details / features later.
  10. So I have an existing unRAID build that unfortunately does not support the virtualization I'd like to take advantage on in the current versions. I plan on utilizing it for Plex Win10 VM - Occasional gaming Win10 VM - Mining (supporting 4-6 GPUs) NAS Those are the main things. I already have a PSU and HDDs. The biggest question is the Mining one - that multiple GPUs can pass through to a single VM. I've read threads here of success so it must be doable. Thanks!
  11. Is there a sticky somewhere that highlights the issues of using Ryzen with unRaid? If not, can we make one? 36 pages of a thread is a lot to have to sift through.
  12. I'm thinking this question is probably packed with many sub-questions / case scenarios. But the overall thought was whether or not I would be able to double my UNRAID server as a general video editing machine as well. Being that the software would be for Windows, my thoughts are my possible options would be the following: Utilize GPU pass through with Windows VM. My only concern here is that at a quick look through the forums, there seems to be a lot of quirks and heartaches associated with the getting the pass through working. Add a secondary SSD for a Windows install. I would simply remove the USB when I want to use it. 2. admittedly sounds like the easiest approach if it could truly work that way (I don't see why not as long as the Windows install doesn't touch the UNRAID drives). Thoughts or suggestions?
  13. I'm running unRAID v5.0.5 and using an OSX Yosemite client. When I open up Finder and connect to Tower, I see all my shares... but then I also see my physical drives, too - disk1, disk2, flash. I believe at some point it wasn't doing this. Only noticing it recently, which some what coincides with an upgrade to Yosemite. Not sure if they're related. Currently only using SMB as my protocol.   14. Dynamix was the first place I went to look when trying to install this. But it doesn't have the apcupsd as part of it's collection of plugins (unless I'm missing something). Unless that was just in regards to my comment of using unMenu. So far I tried to install a version of the apcupsd plugin via unMenu but not successful so far. I'll see where the above thread leads me.
  15. I think I found a thread that mentioned that. However, I'm still using 5.05. I forget why, but I recall reading something that made me think that an upgrade to 6 was not for me. As a casual user, I usually just use the normal web GUI but turns out I needed to go to UnMenu to really get to the meat of things. Not exactly the most friendly of interfaces but I can manage. Still think this might warrant a blog "how-to" post. I haven't found things very easy to find.
  16. I'm slowly getting into adding a UPS (and by slowly I mean I just plugged it in, lol). From what I've gathered, there's only one plugin - apcupsd - that we have which will work with a variety of UPS. Are there any "dummy" guides out there in terms of how to get things set up? If not, perhaps I may go about writing something and sharing later, but ideally there's already one.

  18. Sounds like a manual, automated script seems to be a common path. Was a bit spoiled by ReadyNas having it automatically done for me. Another thing to learn I guess!

  20. That's great info. I just based it on my wattage reqs and figure that would be enough. Never knew it could cause compatibility issues. Good point. I guess when I read the specs, I was thinking a continual 35W when in fact it's only at max usage. Thanks for pointing that out! That'll let me save a few bucks. It scares me not to be backed up. I don't get how people can sit knowing they're not covered. But I guess a large number of users are using for movies, etc. Thank you very much, Gary! Those were excellent, excellent answers. While I understand SNAP will allow me to mount the drives, is there anything to automate the backup? - Does it make sense for me to keep the i3? i.e. Is that what I will need for the future requirements? Or would a G3220 be sufficient? Those are the main things I can think of right now. I'm sure I'll have more ?s later but keeping it to the major ones for now. Hope everything above makes sense.
