  1. Awesome, Lefigg's signature link also got me up and running. Thanks!
  2. Any further word? I just installed, changed the ui file on my Windows client to the IP of my server, unclear on what I should do next. I'm pretty sure it's not backing up, but I don't know if I am having the same problems that others described here, or simply missed a step or three in setting it up. If someone could write a current step-by-step for installing CrashPlan in unRAID and then using it alongside a Windows 7 client, that would be fantastic.
  3. Hi, I am trying to set up printing from a Dell B1160w laser printer, which I understand is pretty much the same as a Samsung ML-2165. I was able to detect the Dell B1160w and select the Samsung ML2160 series driver, and it seemed to have been added, but when I tried to print a test page, there was no response from the printer (although CUPS showed it as a completed job). After some fiddling, it asked me for a user/pass for the printer, which confused me at first. I uninstalled and reinstalled CUPS, then realized that I should be using my gmail login/pass to access the printer. However now when I try to access the WebUI, I get a "This webpage is not available ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED" Uninstalling and reinstalling CUPS does not help. Did I do something to break it? Anyone have any idea how I might get this printer working? *Edit I am also confused by the CrashPlan docker. I install it, can log in via the web UI, but I can't see any way to set folders on my unRaid array to be backed up. Is there a faq someplace that explains all this stuff that I have somehow failed to find in my searches? I have read the Docker Guide and the unRAID6 manual, am still confused.
  4. It's just me and a roommate and we both have pretty powerful computers that we use for most of our movie watching, so transcoding shouldn't be needed unless someone wants to watch off of an ipad or a phone. Max use scenario would be one person streaming 1080p to an ipad/android and another person streaming music over uPnP or watching a movie from their desktop (presumably without transcoding).
  5. Yeah, I don't see myself using it for virtualization at all, it's purely a headless NAS box file/media/print server and nothing else. I decided against the server board and ECC (if I had gone that route, I would have tried FreeNAS and ZFS). The whole server hardware route seemed like overkill for my needs. I have a cloud backup for anything that I couldn't bear to lose, so even if my main computer and my NAS explode, I should still be able to recover anything difficult/impossible to replace. Of course if the sun farts and a solar storm wipes out the data center too, I have a real problem.
  6. So, I've settled on unRAID for my fist attempt at a NAS. I plan to use it to store music, video, and documents, and share/stream to computers running Windows, MacOS, Linux, an ipad, and an andorid phone. I doubt there will ever be more than two streams playing at once. I also hope to plug in a printer and print from any device in the house via the network. 7. I probably should have titled my post "reliability" instead of performance. 90% of the time I will be reading, so I care much more about read performance. I am planning on having an SSD as a cache drive to speed things up a bit. Of course I don't want it to be horribly slow to copy new files to my NAS, but it's not the main issue. Most important to me is that I be able to easily access my shares from all devices, with a minimum of the kinds of headaches I have had in the past with network file sharing.
  8. I am currently planning to build a NAS, and use it both for media streaming and as a Samba server so that I can easily access files from Windows and Mac desktop computers. In my past experiences with various Linux distros, the ease of setting up and connecting to Samba networks is variable to say the least. A bit of searching find complaints about SMB performance on most distros, including unRAID. Of course another solution would be to get an NFS add-on for Windows, but that entails its own risk of problems. So I would like to hear from some people who have unRAID working nicely as both a media server and as a file server to Windows computers. How do you have it set up, and did you have to do anything special on either computer to optimize performance? In addition to unRAID, I am also considering mdadm RAID5/6 with Amahi, OpenMediaVault, or just a regular Ubuntu Server .
