  1. I think I may have found the issue, well, at least a pointer!

When I check with a 3rd party remote connect software, I noticed the resolution is non existent (like no option to chose even), and when i checked the device manager the display adapter is listed as in error and stopped "because of an error" under the red had device

So something in unraid/qemu has changed which is nuking display capability's

EDIT: some more info: this is with no pass-through GPU, using the driver disk loaded, driver says "Red Hat QXL Controller" and is from 2020, I know I created new VM's for lab testing in late 2020 early 2021 and I updated the driver disk so its not gonna be the drivers (alone at least), something outside that has changed

  2. What exactly would cause noVNC to fall over and die on reboot of a VM and require being fully stopped before it started working again (restart does not resolve though VM does indeed reboot as noted in logs when checked after stop/start)?

A fresh install or image of a Windows 11 or 10 system, virtio drivers installed, I hit restart it DOES the restart, but noVNC just shows a black screen or sometimes the last message before the reboot (restarting, stopping services, etc).

Outside of changing the drive location and ram, I left ALL the rest of the settings as unraid defaults.

I have tried with OLDER virtio drivers, I have tried with different vm storage locations (NVMe/HDD, on array, on unassigned device), changed from raw to qcow2 for the storage, there are settings I have not touched such as BIOS and the like, again, I chose the Windows 11 option after hitting Add VM, and just changed disk location and ram size.

This is now occurring on the latest unraid when it was not from my prior install in 2019, at some point probably past 6.9 but I dont recall for sure.

It used to be a MIXTURE of noVNC unable to connect AND the VM would sit at 100% CPU, now it seems to just be noVNC is broken.

I nuked the system to resolve that and some other issues I thought was my install, alas, the problem remains

I have looked through many threads here, and it seems to be a common issue that's occurring now, it seemed to exclude passthrough GPU folks but I just found one as well so thats not it. Some mentioned virtiofs but I have not touched that, again, add vm > windows 11 > ram size > disk location > create > install windows/drivers > restart (sometimes works the first time, then keels over after settling down)

The good thing is that at least it responds to shutdown controls from the dashboard/vm section unlike before when some would stick at 100%

I know I'm a little late with the reply but there are two ways to do that. As mentioned, qemu/kvm can emulate a USB device. You can also do it natively in Linux but it has to be enabled in the kernel and that would require recompiling the kernel. But there are better ways to accomplish what you were trying to do that have been mentioned.

"As mentioned, qemu/kvm can emulate a USB device."

Not seeing anything mentioned about emulating a USB device in the prior replies.

Never found a resolution, everyone just assumes an internet connection is a given when it is in-fact not.

I was finally able to make it local and just plugged in a blank usb drive then used an addon to attach it to the VM and Docker's that I needed to use it for.

Real shame unraid has no feature/function like that, is not limited to utilization in a VM

Go to a command line and run this command:

    ud_diagnostics

Then post the /flash/logs/ud_diagnostics.zip file.  There are some things I need to confirm in your setup.

sorry for the late reply, had to take a trip out of town and did not see this at all

i have made some config changes, so hopefully it doesnt sully what you where looking for, please find the requested diag in our convo

I guess I misunderstood what you were doing.  Your first screen shot is the stock Unassigned Devices display without the UD plugin being installed.  Your second screen shot is with the UD plugin installed.

The devices are being discovered properly.

You have not setup any array devices and of course your array is not started.  You are in a weird state and I'm not sure that UD is detecting unassigned devices.  Unraid dynamically sets the unassigned devices for UD by assigning the 'devX' designation.  I don't believe UD is keeping up with the Unraid changes in this condition because UD thinks some disks are still assigned to the array.  This is not a situation I've tested before - i.e. no array disks assigned.

Uninstall the UD plugin and set up your array.  Once you'e done that. start the array and then install UD to manage the unassigned disks.  Post back here if you still see issues after doing that.

Sorry, guess I was not really clear I guess, before I wiped it, I had 2 drives out of the array, only 1 of them showed in unassigned devices (plugin), but showed up fine when plugin uninstalled.

When I setup my unraid back in 2020~, the first thing I always did was install most of your tools, same hardware, it showed all devices just fine, i only noticed it with the upgrade to 6.12 when i was trying to troubleshoot other issues.

still, the important part is, without the plugin, unassigned devices shows them all,

with the plugin, it shows random selection of devices, if i add a drive to an array or pool unassinged devices plugin will flash in/out and sometimes display a few more, and sometimes a few less, this is all regardless of the array start/stop state

    EDIT:

Further testing, added flash drive to array (zfs pool workaround), started array, drives in UD plugin changed but still not all of them, stopped it, added a regular HDD, started, drives in UD plugin again changed, stopped added a second, again drives shown in plugin changed, added two more, changed again, now I at least see one of my SSD's but not both

"I don't believe UD is keeping up with the Unraid changes in this condition because UD thinks some disks are still assigned to the array" this is from a nuked state, drives where secure wiped and have not been setup at all, USB was also secure erased, nothing i can find is from prior installation.

    EDIT2:

drunk testing, apparently, hitting the "refresh disks and configuration" button for the plugin adds the disks back one at a time each refresh, AND, it survives a reboot...

diag attached in-case it helps tell you anything helpful in fixing the plugin

gotta set it up for use now, if problem persists in the future, will circle back, TY TY for the great tools making unraid greater!

Understood, but I need to see what udev is seeing in each case.  I cannot reproduce this issue and will need your diagnostis to try to figure it out.

UD+ is only some additional packages installed for additional support.  I doesn't change anything that I know of that would affect what devices udev sees.

Ya, its really weird, and when i add some devices to the array or a pool it magically has other drives pop up in the unassigned devices section, tried different browsers as I mainline firefox due to features it has that others don't, but same behavior.

Will edit this in a few min with the diags for both

  7. If someone has already reported this issue, then my use of search terms with the forum's search feature has failed me.

When using Unassigned Devices, not all unassigned devices show up, this seems to be with both .9 and .10

I was already preparing to totally redo my system due to VM issues (VM's not wanting to restart, they just hang and use up CPU even from fresh install with only viostor driver), so thought it may have something to do with but alas, on a totally fresh install, the issue remains

2 pictures attached, one with the default unassigned devices listing, showing all my drives properly, the second, with unassigned devices add-on installed.

  8. It is actually maddening that they allow you to select Windows 11 as an option for making a VM yet it doesn't work out of box.

Windows 11 issues because secure boot is disabled and cannot be enabled without jumping through hoops.

Just remove the Windows 11 option, save lots of headache, I can do custom all day, but I EXPECT an option to work if its presented.

Add the isos as extra drives in the VM definition page. Or, create another VM WITH network access, add a second vdisk image to that VM, copy your software install files there, then mount that vdisk to the non networked VM.

Not ISO's, just files, would like a simple "create dummy fake USB 1GB" that can be mounted, sounds like its not possible, all well, guess will use local PC

I guess I will put it in feature requests, such a simple and yet probably heavily used feature if it existed, throw some files on a virtual USB, "plug" it into any VM, no network access needed, no totally different VM needed

  10. Maybe Google and the forum Search don't love me, maybe I am using the wrong keywords, either way, I am lost.

I have installs to make in a VM, the VM is not network connected, it needs drivers, software.

Sadly, I am not local so I cant just copy the files to the USB then pass-through to the VM.

Is it possible to make a virtual USB/Storage drive with unRAID? Or some other method as I CANNOT connect it to a network (at ALL)?

  11. Is there a reason that unraid is the only solution out of those it competes with that doesn't have a feature to clone/copy/duplicate a VM easily?

Lost in a sea of different "how-to"'s, seeing countless google search result asking the EXACT SAME QUESTION and yet the answers are outdated, over complicated, or changed due to version differences, outdated buggy apps to do so, etc etc etc.

I seriously like unraid over the others, but holy crap this is bang head against wall annoying.

Have you posted in the diskover support thread about your problems?

There is a link in the first post of the thread to the Readme with all info needed to set up diskover. Any unraid specific instructions for common things like adding from dockerhub and editing templates are not a part of our Readmes.

in the LinuxServer.io discord yes, forum thread no, seems like people there pointed to the discord or irc.

"with all info needed to set up diskover. Any unraid specific instructions for common things like adding from dockerhub and editing templates are not a part of our Readmes." is hugely contradictory for anyone not familiar with how linux, dockers, dependencies and unraid work and thus my statement on the advanced tag for it

Will continue on discord or in the other forum thread so as to not clutter CA any further.

To post a docker compose file on the diskover github Readme is not the same as adding a template. Adding a template means we also need to support it, which we are not going to be doing for someone elses container.

Should we remove the template for diskover to please you?

I could understand the angst here if it was needing to maintain a container on the latest version, diskover doesn't however require the latest so I don't understand the venom and angst here especially considering the constant posts I see asking about help with the dependencies meaning basically, that sample size of people unable to use your hard work with diskover container is greater then 1 (I could count forum posts/threads and reddit posts/threads but it would only serve to drive home the same point).

If not making "someone else's container" (which cool, I get that), then maybe adding an ADVANCED ONLY tag to those containers which require dependency's which don't exist in template form and are NOT easy to install, OR on the friendlier side, since it SHOULD BE EXPECTED that absolute dunce's like myself will be looking at these seemingly easy things, providing installation instructions for them might alleviate this building issue with a disclaimer that the instructions can become invalid at any point in time, rather then the current nothing at all.

I have spent the last hour~ in addition to the additional time yesterday, poked a few people, and STILL cannot get this working.

Mind you, I rate myself below novice level and am happy to degrade myself and put on the dunce cap, but even the people i have asked at novice/intermediate level (in a novice>intermediate>advanced scale) still bring no joy.

Sure, I should KNOW ALL OF THIS despite coming from Windows GUI environment, but so far, no readme, existing answers/directions have resolved this setup problem.

Don't get me wrong, I am grateful for the work that the linuxserver.io group put into this and think its AWESOME that you would do the work, BUT, at this point with the lacking first post in the thread, and 3rd party notice about the dependencies required, as a new user to unraid, after all my attempts, mentally I now place a "stick to the EZ mode stuff slick" tag to anything I see now which requires other non template dependencies.

  14. 5 hours ago, Squid said:

You didn't need to do that.  All you had to do was search for elasticsearch, download the first result (which is the official version), and in the repository section append something like :5.6.9 for the tag.  The full list of available tags you can use is available on the dockerHub page (which you can get via the support icon when doing the search)

This... surprisingly was not in the results I found, in-fact, I didn't see anywhere that this was possible until you mentioned something and my search specifically contained this info (not shown in the help feature unRAID has).

    This worked.

And yes, the posts for their containers is sorely lacking

EDIT: I have much more to learn, this is just not enough, must add more variables it seems, wasn't in appdata and couldn't find it anywhere when installed (installed to non existent space!), im sure its somewhere just not finding it, all well, thanks for the help CA peeps! Will go bother someone else or give up down the line :D

  15. I had a question which might (overall) be better suited somewhere else, BUT, I figured at least PART of it can go here since it will be in the form of feature requests.

Disclaimer, worse then a novice here as a new unRAID user (outside of SMB testing), flame away, and YES, I have tried google and the forums own search only to find so many "how-to's" and "directions" that I felt lead to post and ask questions in a few different discord's with no good result.

Some of the app's have dependencies which are NOT in CA but can be found in the docker hub search results after adding the advanced flag.

Sadly, cannot seem to set through CA at least what version to pull.

Feature request 1: version to install option

Feature request 2: sort by last updated

Feature request 3: sort by version number where applicable in search results? (this one is more hazy as has super situational context)

This came about because I wanted to install diskover, sadly, it requires elasticsearch (a specific version at that), nothing in CA, but is found in the CA dockerhub results, sadly, this and a few other docker's do NOT support the "latest" tag, so attempting to install will always fail as CA is using the latest tag.

I tried to find the version that was going to be needed for diskover (older v5.6.x) in the results, but sadly with 368 results, I was getting nowhere fast.

With my search results, quite a few different answers such as packages with other things in it, console install methods (multiple, ala the frustration), and while I will try one of those console methods tomorrow when i have had more then 3hrs of sleep for the day (is 11:30~PM for me), I figured I might get chided for missing the "easy" solution in my search results, but for the wonderful assholes friends who pointed me to unRAID and specifically CA, they have about 3 years of experience into unRAID, but never had to venture into console because of how wonderful CA makes it, they where of no help and not able to figure it out either :X!

Much thanks for CA to everyone involved.
