  1. Guys thank you! I don't know why but I reviewed every single options of the BIOS several times and always missed this VT-D option. I turned it on and the passthrough is now enabled. @Johnm - Do you think it would be a good thing to add a step to enable VT-d in BIOS in your procedure? I would place it with the Enable "Intel Virtualization Technology" step for blind people like myself It is locate in Advenced -> Chiset configuration -> Integrated IO Configuration -> VT-d for those who were in my situation. By the way thanks for this thread. It gave me the confidence I needed to go ahead with this project. tibonhom
  2. Hi Guys, I need your help. I just built a system using the Supermicro X9SCM-F-O MB and the intel E3-1240 CPU. I installed ESXi 5.0 and I created a windows 7 and an unRAID VM on it and everything went fine. It is only when I received my SAS controller and I started to look at the “Passthrough” functionality that I realized I had something not working. In the passthrough screen I have a message saying “host does not support passthrough configuration”. I saw in Johnm screen shots he could see the NICs in the passthrough screen but I don’t. Verified that my board and CPU supports VT-d. The virtualization is enabled in the BIOS. What did I miss? Is it possible I have a defective MB or CPU? Should I try to reflash the BIOS? I am out of ideas. Help or ideas would be much appreciated. I attached some screen shots to show you my setup configs (sorry for the french but for some reason I can't force it to install in english on on french windows) The options are located at the same place as the english gui. Thanks! tibonhom
  3. Thank you very much! I am now ready to order tibonhom
  4. Oh tanks! I missed this. I am gonna change it. Yes. I wanted to order 16gb now so I am ready for ESXi. But I see my description is not so clear. I will adjust it. You didn't say anything about the PSU and this is where I am less comfortable. May I ask you to confirm my choice? or maybe suggest another one... Thanks for your revision. I am now more comfortable to start ordering the parts. tibonhom
  5. Hi, I am reading this forum almost every day since last year. On the first couple weeks my plan was to build a small budget box using one of the Rajahal’s prototypes. After that I saw the add-on page and I realized I would probably need some more power and ram so I can play with these plugins. When I was almost ready to push the order button I saw this thread from johnm talking about his “Virtualized unRAID”. I am still unsure if I am going to go with ESXi at the beginning but I really want to start this build and I want to be ready for ESXi when I will be out of regular unRAID and plugins to explore. I would like to show you my plan so you can help me confirm that my parts are compatible together and with unRAID and also confirm these parts will work when I am ready to go for ESXi. OS at time of building: 5.0 b12 CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1240 Motherboard: SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCM-F-O RAM: Kingston 16GB 2 x (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1333 Case: Zalman MS1000-HS2 Black Tower Case Drive Cage(s): Zalman ZM-HDR1 3-Bay HDD Rack Power Supply: SeaSonic X Series X650 Gold SATA Expansion Card(s): 2 x SATA2 Serial ATA II PCI-Express RAID Controller Card (Silicon Image SIL3132) I will use some drives I have for the testing period. Parity Drive: 7200 RPM drive I already have. Data Drives: WD 1TB green drive I already have Cache Drive: 7200 RPM drive I already have. Total Drive Capacity: Primary Use: Media storage, centralized file server, computer backups, virtual machines... Likes: Dislikes: Add Ons Used: SABnzbd, crashplan,… not sure yet. I want to play with many plugins but will maybe go with VMs instead… Future Plans: Add new drives as needed. Questions: 1 – With this case I have 10 drvies capacity and I plan to have max 4 7200 RPM drives (1 Parity, 1 cache, up to 2 ESXi data store, 6 green drives). Is my PSU ok for this build? Edits: 1/5/2012 Changed CPU from E3-1220 to E3-1240 for hyperthreading. Changed unclear description of RAM. So do you think this plan works? Any comment? Things I missed? thanks for your comments tibonhom
  6. Take a look at Rajahal's prototype thread in the UCD forum and more specifically this post. There is a 9 drive budget box build in there that sounds like it could fit the bill for you nicely. I saw these prototypes and they are nice. I was just trying to get a case with 6 external bays so there is no empty sections but it is not so important. I will follow your advice and go for a prototype build for my first one. Thanks for taking the time to answer.
  7. Indeed, it looks to be a decent case to put your drives in. What case will you use for your motherboard/processor, and what connections will you use between the two enclosures. Well, to be honest, reading the description on the iStarusa site, I didn't realised it was not a regular case where I could fit a motherbooard/CPU and everything with the drives. Not so nice for a first post. Anyway, thanks for your answer.
  8. Hi, It is my first post I am new to unRaid but I read you guys everyday for some times. I am trying to organize my ideas at the moment for my first build. I don't need 12-15 drive but maybe around 8-10 so I am looking for a case with six external bays. I saw these cases today: http://www.istarusa.com/istarusa/product_speclist.php?series=Tower⊂=JBOD CASE My plan would be to get the S-7B-JB with 2X BPN-DE340SS. That would give me 8 drives in a nice and clean case. Somebody tried one of them yet? Are they good? thanks!
