  1. I am looking to update my current rig and move over to a rack I was recently given. Servergrade equipment is new to me, maybe someone here could help.

    I was  considering the Newegg deal for the seaming popular Norco 4224 @ $300 + $10 s&h. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811219038

However when scanning for deals on eBay I came across this used supermico case. $175 +$85 s&h so I like the price, especially considering that includes x2 900w redundant PSU. It also seems the general opinion that supermico is superior albiet costly brand name. http://www.ebay.com/itm/4U-NAS-Supermicro-24-bays-Storage-Server-Chassis-SC846E1-R900B-846EL1-2x-PS-/141841661060?hash=item21066bfc84:g:7KAAAOSwv0tU47SJ

Both hold 24 hot swap drives, plenty of space for me. I currently have 10 3.5" HHD and a single 2.5" cache drive. What are the pros/cons of either case? Drive size? Transfer speeds? I understand the backplane has a lot to do with these questions, and there is where my eyes start to glaze over and I get confused.

    Thanks for helping!

  2. What cables do I need to purchase to complete my new build?

    CASE: (1) Norco RPC-4224

    MOTHERBOARD: SuperMicro MBD-X10SL7-F-O

    SATA CONTROLLER: (1) IBM M1015

    SATA EXPANDER: (1) Intel RES2SV240 (Includes:Six cables with 8087 (Mini-SAS) to 8087 (Mini-SAS) connectors (2

    short and 4 long)

I am looking into purchasing the norco 4224 and am confused with the backplane and therefor mobo requirements. Based on your build, I don't understand why you need both the raid controller and raid expander cards? Doesn't the expander card support up to 24 ports? That plus the 8 ports already on the mobo, why would you need more?

Sorry if I am missing something, still working on my understanding of the ins and outs of server builds and how they differ from a more basic home pc build with only 1 or 2 drives. Thanks for your help!

  3. These are the steps to follow to manually upgrade to java 8... it will take a little time to update everything.

Log into the MineOS Docker by:

    docker ps

Make note of the container ID for MineOS... then type:

      docker exec -t -i ID_Code-Here /bin/bash

This should place you inside the container. Then type all the commands below:

    java -version

You should get something like this.

    java version "1.7.0_x0"

The 7 I guess is java 7. So we want to upgrade.

    export TERM=xterm
    apt-get install default-jre
    apt-get install default-jdk
    apt-get install software-properties-common python-software-properties

    add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
    apt-get update
    apt-get install -y oracle-java8-installer
    apt-get install oracle-java8-set-default

Finally type again to confirm java version:

    java -version

It should hopefully be on Java v.1.8. x Please try and let me know... also let me know if the modpack works. I am not using MineOS for now as my son is off Minecraft for the moment.

    Thanks.

    Getting this message after

    apt-get install default-jdk

    and

    apt-get install software-properties-common python-software-properties

    E: Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/g/gvfs/gvfs-common

    _1.20.3-0ubuntu1_all.deb  404  Not Found [iP: 91.189.91.15 80]

Not sure if that is a real concern, however this step and im stuck.

    add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java

    response ...

    bash: add-apt-repository: command not found

  4. Hi all, @hernandito has a working docker for MineOS but is having trouble getting it updated to include java 8.

    Thanks for your help!

Well. Looks like Docker hub has changed something and it wont build what it built a few months ago. I am getting error that I cannot resolve.

If anyone knows what could be wrong, I would love some input. Here is the link to my Dockefile on github.

  5. @hernandito  I don't know if this is the correct place to ask, but the link for your MineOS docker "support" takes me to this thread.

I am looking to get java 8 updated and am not familiar with dockers to do it myself. Could you point me in the right direction.. or update the docker?

Thanks for your great work! I have been using MineOS via your docker and love it.. just time for a new modpack that required java 8.

  6. I am currently using a roku 2 for my htpc.

What would a modern build look like? The xeon processors have so many options and range of specs I'm overwhelmed. I don't have any time constraints. I don't have a fixed budget, $500? I guess I would set my budget based on what improvements I could achieve.

    Thanks again for your help.

  7. Thanks for the help!

I have zero experience with VM but I like the idea of combining a few of my PCs into one machine. If I wanted to combine current server and run a VM media PC (probably Kodi or Plex) would anything I have now work for that with minor upgrades?

If the answer above is, "time for new MB/CPU/Ram..." suggestions? A new machine would be required to run everything currently, add support for VM of media PC to main TV in livingroom, potential of 2 additional "work" VM with light use, home automation software (most likely through a docker), hosting mineOS running vanilla and/or FTB modded minecraft server with no more than 6 users.

  8. I have been running an unRaid box for several years and now am thinking about upgrading. I am running 6.1.1 (Pro) and am using several dockers. Plex, SAB, CP, Sonarr, and Teamspeak3. Plex is currently running 1 stream at a time, but may need to do more in the very near future. Before getting into dockers I was only running plugins for SAB, SB, & CP with no issues. Now that I have a Plex server running I am seeing some slowdowns.

I am interested in MineOS and experimenting with a few of the home automation dockers such as home-assistant or openHAB.

Where is my $ best spent? Will upgrading the CPU make any difference? Swapping out the 2g ram sticks for something larger? I'd rather not scrap the whole box.. but if I did what should I be looking for?

    Thanks for your thoughts!
