1. Nothing wrong with any of them provided that you have enough air movement for cooling.. front input and rear exhaust fans.

But I'll just add that 2.5" drives were never (at least according to my recollection) recommended for long term / NAS type storage solutions.. they didn't have the reliability factor of 3.5" drives.  Maybe that's changed now and I'm just old school...

  2. If you can find it anywhere the SilverStone cases are nice and the RM420 is a 20 bay hot swap.  A quick peek looked like it's not available anywhere right now.  You're going to pay a shiny penny for a hot swap case of that size.

The backplane connects the drives nicely and then from the backplane you still need your HBA for all the SAS connectors.

Here's a simple diagram that shows you what I mean..

How should i go about installing/moving the data? "Destroy" my Hardware RAID 5, Install all the HDDs/SSDs except the 6TB one, assign the drives and 1 SSD as Cache and leave the other one for the VM? (without parity?), Format Disk/create the array, move the data from the 6TB via unassigned devices and Krusader etc till its empty, add it to unraid as parity?

Do not do anything to the RAID drives until the data is off of every disk.  As far as I know you cannot 1) read the data off of any single disk of the RAID 5 array without the entire array being operable, and 2) remove any disks from the RAID 5 array.

This is the problem -- you can't do anything with those RAID5 disks until any data that you want is transferred over from them.   If you destroy the RAID array you destroy your data.

So even if you use the 6TB as a temporary data drive you have up to 20TB of data to move (5*4TB), which does not work mathematically!

    Yes.

    - Could i plug n play the RAID Controller to the new build, insert all HDDs and get access to the data on the drives via unassigned devices?

Not sure on that one, someone else will have to confirm.  But at the very least I would imagine it would depend heavily on whether or not Unraid has compatible drivers for the RAID card to use it in the first place, and aside from that I don't know if Unassigned Devices would see it as a RAID configuration or as individual disks.

Without available drives you're in a pretty tough situation..  you basically need to be able to move all the data off the 5*4TB RAID drives before you destroy the raid configuration.

Even if you initially used the 6TB drive as a data drive on Unraid, that's not enough space to move all your data -- and you can't remove a drive from the RAID configuration to use.

Unless someone has another idea your only move is really to buy a couple more drives first to move your data off of the RAID drives.

How much data is on the 5*4TB drives?  Assuming they're not totally full you might be able to get away with just 2 new 4TB drives, or an 8, or whatever you wanted.  2*4TB or 1*8TB + existing 6TB drive -- move all data off and then destroy the RAID configuration to get single drives again, and then move the data off the largest (6 or 8TB) drive to the empty drives so you can use that largest drive as parity in Unraid and then start adding empty disks as they become available.

It's a messy process for sure.

Another note I see that you don't have a GPU selected -- you may want one for your Windows VM to passthrough unless you plan on only using VNC (not very efficient for an office setting).

  5. When it comes to moving data around it's a game of back and forth... only way to do it, unfortunately.

Some people like midnight commander.. I prefer an easier to use GUI like Krusader or Double Commander..

Move everything from B drive to empty drive on the array -- format B and add to array.

Move everything from C drive to either disk on array -- format C drive and add to array.

Move everything from D drive to any disks on array -- format D drive and add to array.

(Do you have a parity drive?  If not you may want to think about using one before moving data)

  6. Yes it's basically as simple as that.  When you change the drive assignment and start the array it will most likely start to clear that 14TB drive (which is going to take a long time) and then it will become your parity drive.

You may want to follow the steps in the Unraid wiki about changing drives around... I don't know if it matters in this case since you're only using 2 drives but there's a step about using a new configuration.  I don't 100% understand what it's all about (but I do it).  Since you're moving teh 14TB to parity your "second" disk should be moved to the first data slot and that might be where the "new config" comes into play.

Someone with a better grasp of moving disk assignments around might chime in but I recently replaced two SSD cache drives with 2 NVME drives and added a data disk and had no issues with anything, so I don't think you have anything to worry about with losing data by changing drive assignments.

  7. This seems very similar to the Recycle Bin plugin that is available.  Do you have that installed and/or is safe-rm significantly different from it where you don't want to use Recycle Bin?

    Quote

This plugin adds a per share .Recycle.Bin folder to hold samba deleted files until you empty the trash either manually or remove aged files on a schedule. Shares that are excluded will not have the recycle bin enabled. A .Recycle.Bin folder is created in each share the first time a file is deleted in the share that you can access by browsing to //Tower/Share/.Recycle.Bin. You can restore deleted files from the //Tower/Share/.Recycle.Bin. The User access to the .Recycle.Bin folder is the same as the User share access. If you remove the plugin all deleted files will be kept in the share .Recycle.Bin folders. You will have to empty the trash before you remove the plugin if you do not want to use it.

I copied all of the Stash data from my Windows storage to unRAID but I'm having trouble mapping the folders (config, metadata, cache, generated) to the docker.

Did you, in fact, create the maps to the folders?  And then put the data into those folders? I have never migrated from Windows but this is where I would start troubleshooting..  Your docker config should basically look something like this:

    Untitled.png.856ffb09af6178150711422346bb889b.png

    Untitled2.png.e508cc424441a8d11049c61f4aac2c60.png

I don't remember if these paths had to be created manually or if they were included in the template..

It is entirely possible that a direct migration is not possible if the database is filled with Windows paths and now it's on Unraid... in that scenario the best you might hope for is that when you create a new library from Unraid that the existing metadata, etc, is used ..

This is another one that might be better addressed to the Stash devs/community.

Off topic, should we all share our 'media' with each other? ;D hah.

  9. That just means that your docker file is filling up... the default size is 20GB which most people say is sufficient but depending on the number and sizes of docker apps you install that 20GB can get smaller and smaller....  mine is 70GB just so I can install as many dockers as I want.

It's nothing to worry about unless you have any paths misconfigured in individual dockers, such as something being downloaded inside the docker image rather than to your array.

Without the details of your docker containers it's impossible to say if anything is wrong or you just have a lot of dockers installed.

    Hello,

What folders may I exclude on Plex to reduce the size of backup ?

At the moment the only folder I back up for Plex is /mnt/user/appdata/PlexMediaServer/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Databases"

That directory contains your library data and watch state / history.. basically the important stuff.  Metadata can be recreated.

I use a user script for this and not the Appdata Backup plugin, but you may be able to simplify things by only excluding the metadata related folders

  11. A question like that I would probably throw in the Lounge... someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

As for the question you didn't ask but want to ask --- I'd say that it depends on what you're using to watch the videos, i.e. what kind of metadata you need.

According to the website it says that Meta-X "can select from multiple entries to get just the look you want, then quickly write the tags into the file so that it shows up in iTunes, Apple TV or whatever media play you use, just like it would if you had purchased the movie from iTunes."

Not sure what your end player is (Apple TV, Chromecast, FireTV, Kodi, Plex, Emby, etc etc etc etc)... so it could depend on what format your metadata needs to be in.  If it's literally written into the file then I'm not sure if anything like that exists, at least not that I'm familiar with, as everything I use creates nfo/jpg files as the metadata.

That is very odd, are you sure something is not wrong with your setup?

I managed to work it out with some help from doron.. was able to get things going again using the Go file to create the keyfile...

every attempt at using a keyfile from the GUI or any other method that I could think of (like my code above to create the keyfile and start the array) was resulting in an emtpy keyfile in /root so it was very worrying and aggravating.  I had changed out my hardware this morning so was praying I didn't inadvertently screw things up.

    All is well right now.

Maybe a silly question, but how do I actually use your dos2unix script as a user script? Are user scripts added to PATH?

What I have done now, is create a file called dos2unix.sh somewhere on my array, which I then call in the CLI to do the conversion, but this does not use the User Scripts plugin. So I guess my question is: after adding your dos2unix script to the User Scripts plugin, how do I then actually go about using it?

Run it from the user scripts plugin page (from settings)

  15. Never heard of BiglyBT so I'd ask why do you want to use this versus an established docker (rTorrent for example) that is ready to install and use on Unraid?

Having a second computer running sonarr/radarr/whatever else defeats [some of] the purpose of having Unraid in the first place.. if you are going to have another computer doing all the work then you might as well just have a NAS hard drive and not Unraid.

However, what you could attempt to do is just try to get this BiglyBT running on your own or with some guidance from other sources... that's part of the "fun" with Unraid/Docker.  Google biglybt unraid, biglybt docker, stuff like that and see if you can figure anything out.  Right off the start it seems like https://github.com/Fullaxx/biglybt might be a good place to start experimenting.

  16. So you certainly have a lot of information already.. I can't really tell you anything useful but I can comment on my experiences thus far.  I don't know about the headers and such and if or why you'd need/want to back them up.

My experience is that the encryption can be a pain in the ass... Unraid's encryption system -- in my opinion - was implemented like it was an afterthought and not designed or implemented correctly to make using it easy.

I have not used the passphrase option, only the key file, and perhaps that's the real issue.

Any attempt at creating a secure keyfile -- i.e. removing the keyfile from /root where it resides at all times (meaning if someone accessed your server they would have access to the keyfile and could start the array without your interaction) introduces problems at being able to start the array with a remotely located keyfile -- there's no native solution to any sort of secure keyfile (the keyfile itself is stored in plaintext).

My personal experience is that if the keyfile is not already in /root and I attempt to start the array in the GUI by selecting the keyfile --- it will not start.  It fails 100% of the time saying invalid keyfile or something along those lines.  Using the GUI to start the array with a keyfile does not work, period.  For me.

Remotely downloading the keyfile upon reboot/Unraid start from the Go file generally works --- but still does not start the array.  Fails.

Thus far I've only been able to manually download the keyfile and/or manually creating the keyfile then manually starting the array from command line in probably not the best method --- but again, no method from the GUI works...
echo -n 'MY KEY' > /root/keyfile && CSRF=$(cat /var/local/emhttp/var.ini | grep -oP 'csrf_token="\K[^"]+') && curl -k --data "startState=STOPPED&file=&csrf_token=${CSRF}&cmdStart=Start&luksKey=/root/keyfile" http://localhost/update.htm
I don't know if the passphrase option works any better.

I'm actually, probably, most likely, maybe considering UN-encrypting my drives to get around all these problems... not sure on that yet.. but if I'm dead then good luck to any family members trying to start the server.....

I use shiomax/jrivermc25 with an app called Gizmo on my Android phone.

The app pushes the track then to my Marantz amp. Most tracks are stored as flac on the share and converted to wav on the fly. Sounds great!

  18. Hey all, I'm hoping someone might have some chips laying around that they no longer want.  Upgrading my server when all parts arrive and last minute thought was to increase RAM also, hopefully at a slightly lesser cost than retail.. ;)

Looking for up to 4x16GB or 4x32GB DDR4-2666 / 2400 / 2133 Unbuffered (UDIMM) ECC sticks for my incoming SuperMicro X11 board.

Currently have 32GB in my system so not sure if I reallllyyyyy need to add more, but figured I'd look..

    Thanks
