How can I get "model/serial" to show up for my USB devices on the main page? Today I finally upgraded from v4.5.6 > v4.7 > v5.0-rc5 of unRAID, so I could add a couple of 3TB drives to my array. I also updated unMenu from 1.2 (old, I know!) to 1.5. Everything seemed to go pretty smoothly, but for some reason I lost the "model/serial" information from my USB devices (under UNRAID drive and Drive Partitions - not in protected array) on my home page. Thanks guys. I really really thought I had already precleared that drive. I guess I should have made sure and did "another" preclear to be sure, especially since I didn't actually need it yet. That'll learn me. Now I love that preclear script even more, now that I have experienced firsthand what happens without it!

I just fouled up and added a drive that was in my machine for awhile but not in my array. I was SURE I had already precleared the drive... but apparently I hadn't; when I added the drive, Unraid showed "Clearing" next to the new disk, and now my array is offline, unraid shows "Starting, clear 2% complete...". I see no "stop", "cancel" or anything like that so I'm looking at a lot of offline time. Argh. Annoying thing is, I didn't even need this drive added yet... but I did need my array. Is there any way to cancel via the command line or something? Every other drive I've ever added to my array was precleared, so I've never seen this before and have no idea how to stop it.

First off, thanks again to Joe for a great script! I just precleared 2 WD20EARS drives (with pins 7 and 8 jumpered). I precleared them simultaneously using separate screen sessions. They both successfully precleared, but gave me the "Offline data collection activity was suspended by an interrupting command from host" warning. I gather from reading posts in the forum about it, I shouldn't need to worry about this. For me the reason was I'd recently wiped my system and installed Windows 7. So there are definitely reasons why even longtime unraid users might be using the forums while not being logged in. Anyways thanks for adding the note Joe, and for creating such a useful script!

Hi, thanks for a great script, Joe! I used it when I was setting up my unRaid server in January. I'm adding some drives now so I thought I'd download the most recent version... and I couldn't find the download link. I felt like an idiot, I kept searching the post for the link and couldn't find it... until finally I tried logging in to the forum, and then the link appeared at the bottom of the post! It would be nice if the link showed up for guests, even if it just tells you you need to log in when you click on it, but as it is, there is no indication there is any link at all. Not your fault, obviously! Just a usability problem with the forum. Could you maybe make mention of this? Maybe at the top of the first post, say something like "Download link at the bottom of the post. Make sure you are logged in to see it" I'm sure most people here are logged in anyways, but for those who aren't, it could save a lot of time and frustration looking for the link.

Those pins can be frustrating, for sure. I hated them at first but I've gotten to like them. I got a replacement heat sink because the stock one was just too loud for me. I popped off the heat sink, wiped the thermal compound off the CPU, and then plopped in the new heat sink. The new heat sink (Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro 7) went in first try, took me all of about 15-30 seconds to attach it solidly to the board, didn't have to remove the motherboard or anything, and didn't have to force any of the pins; they all clicked into place easily. Love the new heatsink. I can't even hear it, it's quieter than my case fans.

I'm hoping the fact that it's just one UDMA CRC error that I should be OK. I'm going to do another WD10EADS shortly. Next question: I'd like to stress-test a drive that is already part of my array (2 data drives, no parity drive), but doesn't have any data on it yet. I thought about using the preclear utility on it, but if I remove it from the array, then I can't restart the array - I get the "Too many wrong/missing disks" error. Can I just use the restore function? Is there a better way to stress-test a drive that is already part of the array? Actually I wouldn't mind testing the drive that DOES have data on it as well.

Thanks RobJ! This is my first build from scratch, but I have upgraded CPUs before so I knew I had to be careful there! I'll definitely be reading up on airflow and so on, especially from other users here with the same case. You're right, I did have fun, and I definitely won't hesitate to build the next one!

The RAM looks fine, although I have no experience with DDR3 yet. My guess is that if you plug in the RAM it will work. I have been building systems for years and found that most problems with RAM come from people that buy very fast RAM and try to run it at standard settings. Very fast RAM typically requires voltage boost and timing adjustment. Some motherboards provide options to make such adjustments and others do not. So if you buy a basic motherboard and fast RAM that requires you change settings that the MB does not support - SOL. Motherboards try to do things automatically in terms of setting up the RAM, so chances are good your memory will be recognized correctly and settings adjusted. If you have problems, there are some posts on the Newegg site about timings and voltage adjustments. I'd recommend reading them and looking at the MB manual so that you understand what setting changes you need/want to make. Post back if you have questions and I will try to advise you. Ditto! I'm indebted to you as well since I based my build on yours. I really hated the heatsink/fan part! I got very frustrated trying to get the pins to lock in. I'm still not sure why I was having so much trouble the first time, and then none at all the second time, after a bit of a break. I may need to do that soon. I've discovered I have WAAAAY too many DVDs... lucky this baby is so expandable. Yeah the internal USB ports are perfect for unraid ! The unraid server is sitting under my desk in my den next to my workstation, so I want it to be as cool and quiet as possible. Hence the 5400 rpm Greenpower drives. I might put in a Samsung Spinpoint 1TB drive for the parity drive though, as those are almost as quiet as the WD Green drives. I wasn't planning on getting one of the additional 4-in-3's but I ended up grabbing one at a local store yesterday, and set it up exactly as you describe. I like the way it looks, I love the blue LED fans! I installed a 120mm fan on one of the top holes, not sure if it's really necessary. Like I said, I'll play around. I wonder if I can get by with a passive cooler for the CPU and just rely on two big 120mm/140mm case fans at the top to keep the air moving inside the case?

Wow, this thread has taken on a life of its own! Sorry I went MIA there since my last post. Reason is simply that I was waiting for my parts to arrive. My PSU didn't arrive until yesterday. As soon as I got home, I assembled it. Yup, first time building one from scratch by myself, although I have upgraded a couple of CPUs and so on. I had a couple of minor hair-pulling incidents - first time when I didn't realize what the "standoffs" were for, and couldn't understand why the ports on the board wasn't lining up with the hole in the back of the case (how embarrassing!)... and the second when trying to install the CPU fan, I had a heck of a time getting the pins to click in. I actually had to take a break and walk away from the computer and come back - tried it again and it went on in like 5 seconds, easy as pie. So finally I got all the parts in the case... plugged it in, connected it to my TV in my living room, turned it on... and was absolutely shocked to see that it worked, right off! Booted off my USB flash no problem! I was expecting at least a few mis-starts, but so far so good. But I didn't have it in a room with an ethernet connection yet. So I took it into my den, plugged it into the network, turned it on - typed "//tower" into my other computer... and OH MY GOD... The Lime Technology page showed up. I couldn't believe how painless it all was, everything just... worked. So I formatted the 2 drives, no parity drive yet, I'll have to go and pick one up today. Copied one of my DVD rips over to it - and now I'm watching "The Dark Knight" off it. I'm absolutely stunned at how easy it's been to get started, once I got over my initial feeling of being overwhelmed by it all. So anyways, I came back here and logged in and saw all the replies. Russell - wish I'd read your post before I got started, it would have saved me a lot of time, especially with the "standoffs" thing and the front face cables! But I'm sort of glad I figured it out myself too, hair-pulling and all, quite a feeling of satisfaction there. It was nice to read your post and see I did everything right (eventually!) though! So I have a lot of stuff on my to do list now. - get more drives - buy a pro key - get a quieter aftermarket heatsink/fan - play around with the unraid software and settings - organize all the cables and so on inside the case - experiment with fans and taping over holes and so on to improve airflow - hook up my new gigabit switch Fun fun fun!
