    Hi,

I have the ones with the main lead and 4 going off of that.

    Board is Asrock x370 SLI

LSI 6Gbps SAS HBA LSI 9201-8i = 9211-8i IT Mode ZFS FreeNAS unRAID US

    These are the cables

    https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B012BPLYJC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_image_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The funny thing is it won't let me boot into the Bios when this card is plugged in.  I'm wondering if it's the drives I have plugged in. They are only going to be used as backups under unassigned devices.  My main drives are Seagate 10tb, these ones are WDs 4TB.   Maybe they need formatting? Isn't that what unassigned devices does? Thanks for the reply.

According to Asrock  they say the board may not be compatible.

Are you sure you have the correct SATA breakout cables?

That was only true if you were using the New Config tool.   If the disk was disabled then Unraid is going to overwrite the existing contents with what it thinks the disk  SHOULD contain taking into account the combination of the other data drives plus parity.  This is the correct action to have taken if all your other drives are running without problems and parity is valid. It sounds like a rebuild is what is happening at the moment?   In other cases it can lead to data loss.

Looks like it just rebuilt the data, doesn't look like I lost anything. Now if I could get my LSI sata controller to pickup in unraid I would be all set. It's already in IT Mode. Just won't work. Thanks for the reply appreciate it.

Is the drive showing as disabled (with a red ‘x’)?

you should provide you system diagnostics zip file (obtained via Tools -> Diagnostics) attached to your next post so we can see the current state of your system.

I think it did have an x on it.  I just went ahead and re added it  It said disk is now active, it's running a parity sync / data rebuild.  I read that as long as the disk was setup by unraid before it shouldn't touch the data. If I'm wrong my bad. LOL.

Thanks for the reply. Appreciate it.

  5. Hi,

I had some motherboard issues and ended up unplugging my drives and plugging them back in. I have  5 10tb disks with 1 as a parity.

When I booted up it said "Disk 2 Not Installed" It looks like it has put itself in Unassigned Devices.  If I stop the array and use the dropdown menu and add it back to my main array will it wipe the data off? I don't want to loss the data.

    Thanks

I have no idea how it did that, I am a hardware person and am just now diving into the intricacies of Unraid.  Can you input the correct I.P. into the config file?

Hopefully @itimpi will see this and teach us both.

Funny thing, tried logging in again and it worked.  LOL...Making progress.  Afraid to add my LSI controller now (Already in IT Mode) I need it to add some drives to Unassigned devices.

This what I use, it is cheap, simple and doesn't take up a valuable slot.

    Hi SirReal63,

Made some progress.  I cleared the Bios settings from the board, rearranged a couple slots, and was able to boot up.

Here's the other problem.  It's booting to a different ip then what's in my network config file.  Obviously I can't access unraid from the browser.

Tried deleting network file but it didn't do nothing.  If I go into Windows explorer and select my server,  all it shows me is the flash drive folder. Normally I would see all my server folders. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

Hopefully it is something simple, like the video card not being seated well enough.

I hope so.  I didn't spend a lot on the card only using it for display. Thought about a better card for working with Plex, but they say trans coding with your cpu is better. I can't say I have never tried the other way. Thanks for going out of your way to help. I will let you know what happens. Probably just order a video card.  I'm seriously thinking that is what it is.  A slightly better card wouldn't hurt  Be safe!

That was a good processor and still very usable for Unraid, B450 boards are starting to get back in stock or you can splurge and go X570 and a new processor or wait for what will be an overpriced B550 when it hits the street.  Have you ruled out the video card?

Stupid me, you are right could be the video card. This system is only about a year and a half old.

The board may be toast, but it is confusing.  The LSI board should boot prior to POST, and I can see if the LSI board had an issue it could prevent the PC Bios from posting, but with it removed and a forced bios error you should get something.  That was a pretty good board when it was new but it looks a good time for an upgrade.  Which processor are you using?

Using a Ryzen 1700x  8 core cpu.  If I change this board I will probably have to change the cpu.  I was looking at going a little bigger anyway, not right now if I didn't have to. Not too many boards that will support this cpu and allow for upgrading. Little frustrating LOL.  I hate shopping for motherboards. Don't have another cpu.

It is really unusual to not be able to see the boot screen and enter the bios, really unusual.

Plugged the laptop in the same line going to the screen and it worked. You would think with nothing plugged in it would boot to an error screen.

I have never seen anything like this.  Maybe hdmi?  I have 2 of them one on the board and one one the network card. Tried both.

If it were me, I would disconnect all drives and pull the USB flash drive and all peripheral cards except the display.  You may need to force a bios error to be able to get into it.  Other ways are pulling the memory, the battery or the keyboard or resetting the CMOS with the correct jumper found in motherboard manual.

Just tried what you suggested. I pulled everything except the network card.  Still won't kick to the screen,  thinking the board must be gone. It should at least send something to the screen, screen is not detecting anything.

It is highly likely the boot order has been changed from your description.     Getting into the Bios depends on you pressing at System start whatever key your motherboard specifies for getting into the BIOS.   Common options are F2, DEL, ESC.   Which one it is should be specified in the motherboard manual.

I'm aware of that and have tried that. The problem is it won't load the motherboard screen at all.  Have checked the hdmi feed it works. I'm thinking that controller screwed the board up somehow. The lights on the board are active and the network adapter is active. Doesn't mean it's still not broke, seems very odd.

  16. Hi,

FYI: Asrock x370 Killer SLI board

I purchased a LSI 6Gbps SAS HBA LSI 9201-8i = 9211-8i IT Mode.  I installed it but the drives I added didn't show up, so I removed it and I was going to deal with it later.  Now the flash drive won't even boot to the motherboard so I can't even get into the bios settings.  It just boots to a blank screen, so I'm assuming it probably changed  the boot order on me when I added the controller.  Not sure how to access board now.  Even when I switch USB ports the light stays solid on the flash drive until I start the server up. Is that normal? Don't remember seeing that before.

I originally thought it was the flash drive,  just changed that a number of months ago.  I know they can still go again, thinking the LSI controller broke it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!  Side note: I have an old ssd drive I no longer use that I have removed from the system, but can not get it to remove from the unassigned devices.  What unassigned devices app should I be using?  Standard or Plus?

  19. Hi,

FYI:  ASRock - X370 Killer SLI

Looking for a sata controller 6 or 8 ports that just plugs and works. Main sata controller all filled. Last one I bought didn't work.

From what I understand most people buy them off Ebay and are in IT Mode.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.   Thank you!

  20. Hi Everybody,

At some point I'm going to have to change my motherboard which is a ASRock - X370 Killer SLI., and my cpu. I have a big Thermaltake case that holds up to 20 drives, but unfortunately I have used all my 6SATA3 ports.  In the meantime I need to setup external backup drives that i can sync data to. These drives will not be connected to the array.  Looking for at least 8 bays 3.5 drives.  Anybody be able to recommend something that will play nice?

    Thank you

    Randy

These fanless boxes do run hot (hot enough that it can warm your tea - not make it hot but make it warm-ish) but if you actually measure temp, it's still within spec so I would not be too concerned about temp (other than avoid putting sensitive things like plants near it).

I would also recommend running critical infrastructure e.g. router separately instead of in a VM.

As I have seen recently, users have been reporting problems with pfsense not happy with passed through NIC.

I don'[t wan't to run as a VM.  I will still have my router looped in somewhere.  Just researching the different boxes. I've seen the Netgate ones. A little more money but from what I understand they are a pretty good product.

Thanks for the input guys. Much appreciated.

  22. Hi,

Anybody own one of these boxes? I'm thinking of adding one of these boxes to the Unraid server.  Read some good reviews, but then I read they run hot.

4K Support Fanless Mini PC Mikrotik Pfsense

I have been thinking of adding more security to the server.  I thought it was a good time to try this now because I have been having issues with my custom docker ips and my Asus RT AC5300, Merlin Firmware won't keep some of custom docker ips online anymore. The router is up to date and nothing else is dropping off the network. It could be an issue with the router, or a combination of docker ips and router, maybe network card. If I separate it with a Pfsense box I should be able to narrow it down and have more security.  Just trying to find the right Pfsense box with enough Lan ports so I can remove my switcher box. Need a minimum of 6 ports.
