  1. So 50% of the time the server will be on. I would say that it's best to leave it on. You can add an UPS if you are worried for power failures.
  2. No sure. Icy Box black vortex has a regular one and a hot swap. I have the hot swap. A bit more expensive but not that much. The R2 comes std with 2 hd cages for 4 discs. But they are side loaded and not frontal. Easy plug in. But not hot swap. One icy dock can go in top. The other one maybe between the internal hd cages and power supply. But you will have to check that. The fan based in the bottem you'll have to move to the side. But the case is pre designed for that.
  3. Fractal design R2 XL. At the moment 8 disc's in the std cages. I also have 3 in the IcyDock. With some adjustments you can add another 4 disc's below but you need to buy another cage. I'm using the 3 standard 120mm fans that were included and added a 4th. I also have the one in the icydock.
  4. Room isn't that hot. Around 23-24 degrees. In my previous case, an old CM stacker, all my disc's were hitting the high 40's during parity check with a top of ~50. Since my new case I don't have these issues anymore.
  5. I have the hot-swap. Temp of the disk was around 34 during a parity check. I just put in a new HGST 6TB disk in that cage and during the preclear the temp didn't go over 34-35 degrees.
  6. I have the Icy Box black vortex http://www.icydock.com/goods_cat.php?id=142 This one has a 120mm. The leds can be turned off
  7. Looking good indeed. But I don't like the 80mm fan. Maybe a bit small and smaller fans tend to make more noise and the cage can get hotter. Especially if you have 5 HD running in it..
  8. Yes. Sorry. Wasn't clear. So the old parity will be used as data drive. But I was thinking to start using xfs for that drive. All others ones are still reiserfs. After beeing used for a few years a preclear on the old parity isn't needed? I think the drive has been tested enough during the parity time. It's a WD red.
  9. Hi I just replaced my old server with a new one. I am taking the old drives from previous server. I have also bought a 8TB disc. This will be my new parity. At the moment I'm doing a preclear on it. When finished I select the new drive as parity. My old parity will be a new data drive (4TB). I think this is also a good occasion to gradually move over to XFS. What's the best way to proceed? After preclear I format the new parity as XFS. When new parity is selected I do a preclear. Later add the old 4tb disc and format as XFS. I add the drive to the system and tada. All finished? Apparantly there are no issues that you have a mix in file formats. So over time all drives will be XFS when replaced... Am I missing something? Or can I proceed like this.
  10. OK. I have done a copy of the newest unraid version to my stick. Just plugged it in and it works.. No settings/apps lost because those files weren't overwritten. Thanks for the help everyone.
  11. I use the USB 2 port for my unraid stick. USB 3 isn't used at the moment. My external HD will have more benefit on the faster speeds I have been running memtest last night. No errors found. I had multiple runs. My new server was running all night. So hardware looks OK. I have now eliminated that my RAM is the problem. Next possibility is the software on the old unraid stick. So next test I will be doing is creating a new USB stick with a fresh unraid install.. Let's hope this fixes the problem...
  12. So if the memtest is OK I just create a new stick? I don't need copy any data from the old to the new stick? I once had a update gone wrong. After that I copied the new unraid version to the stick and had a fresh install. I didn't lose my data and my top folders were still present. I will have to reinstall the apps I presume. But that's not that worst that can happen
  13. You have an excellent point. Will do a mem test. Different stick/fresh install. I am still using my HD's from previous unraid. I don't want to lose that data. How can I be sure that I won't lose my shares and data created?
  14. My motherboard, cpu and memory has been assembled in the hardware store. Bios update done for the board and they claim everything is tested. So also the memory. But to be sure I can do a test myself. The USB stick is coming from my previous unraid server. That one worked without problems. I just plugged this usb stick in my new server. My server boots. I see the unraid screen with options. Unraid boots and I see an OK and a 2nd one. After that one my server reboots. So unraid doesn't start up.
  15. Hmm. This isn't working for me Tried to boot with and without my screen. Same error. After a while a reboot. With my screen on it was with the same timing. So after 2 OK's... Could there be another problem? I suppose it is still software related...
  16. Yep. I knew that. But that makes the bootloop even harder when you try to fix it My previous unraid was a normal motherboard. Only booted when needed. With the new setup I won't restart that often.
  17. Thank you burtjr. Will try this. My server is connected to an old LCD. Most of the time it is just off but with the new setup it was obviously on to check if everything is working. The monitor is always linked to my server. The slow start up is indeed a pain. I was aware that it was going to be slow but you aren't really used to slow boots these days.
  18. Hi I recently bought new hardware for my unraid server. I bought everything new accept the HD's that I am reusing. New hardware: -Supermicro X11SSH-F -Intel Pentium G4620 -Kingston ValueRAM - 8 Gig DDR4 ECC -Cooler Master V Series V550 -LSI SAS 3.0 (12GB) HBA 9300-8i -Fractal Design Define XL R2 After assembly my server boots. It is rather slow but apparently that's not unusual for this motherboard. Everything starts up and I see the Unraid boot menu start. I get my first 2 OK's and then it stops and the server reboots.. This loop keeps going on and on. I don't think I have a hardware problem otherwise unraid wouldn't be able to start I presume? I am using the same USB stick from my previous unraid. Just popped it in my new case and boot. Didn't do an adjustment on the stick. Other people on the forum have used the same process and don't have any issues. Does anyone have an idea what the problem would be? BIOS has been updated and tested at the hardware store. I am using the last unraid software verson.
  19. You can take a look at: Fractal Design Define XL R2 Without adjustments you can fit 8 HD's in the bays. There is room for one 5-in-3. That makes 12 HD's. At the bottom you can add another 4 HD bay. That totals at 16 disc's. If you are creative you probably add a few more disc's. Benefits is a quiet case with good cable management for a normal price.
  20. I'm looking for a sata controller. Apparantly is lsi the way to go looking at the comments I have read in this thread. But is it best to buy the 9211or the newer 9300?
  21. True that the 10Gbase has no effect. But that's not an issue for me. In my place the X11SSH is around €470 at a regular store, not Ebay. If you buy everything new it is cheaper to go for that set-up. If you can find a cheap 8 port HBA cards then you are better of doing that. But choice is limited for me. Bad location for 2nd hand market in Belgium... But there are probably possibilities in other European countries if they want to send to Belgium and they don't charge to much for postage. I've read that discussion yesterday. At first I intended to buy an SM board X11SSH-LN4F (+/- €270) + combo with an LSI card. But when I found the other SM board with 8 SATA and 8 SAS I started to have doubts.. :-)
  22. Well that is a reply that helps me. Thank you. :-) I don't think I have the need for virtualization. But maybe it would be best to gather a bit more of information in the forum what the possibilities there are to do virtualization. But I don't think I need a setup with these capabilities. So that's (probably) not an issue for me. 10GbaseT is not compatible with my gigabit lan? I thought it would be compatible with 10/100/1000. I have a gigabit lan network at home. For #3. That depends on how many HD you will have in your file server. This board had 16 ports. So no fuss with additional cards, because these with 8 ports aren't coming cheap either. I'll be running an unraid with 10 drives for start excluding cache or 2nd parity. But I want some expansion capacity for later (cache, extra drive, 2nd parity?). Because I immediately start with 10 drives I was looking at motherboard + SATA/SAS controller or a board with enough ports. As you know there is limited choice in a motherboard with plenty of ports for not to much €€€. Motherboard + LSI SAS 9300 combi is around the same price the X11SSH-CTF board. So I wanted to go for an easy solution. But maybe the wise choice would be a regular board + extra controller.
  23. Hmm. Is the board so unpopular or is it to recent that nobody has tested it yet? When I look op some details about it looks like the SAS ports are based on the SAS 9300-8i 12Gb/s SAS Host Bus Adapter. When I look at other topics for controllers is this a card that comes highly recommended and shouldn't be compatible with unraid. It should work right out of the box. Has anyone else found more details about it this SM board? Or is somebody using it in his config?
  24. Does anyone has experience with above mentioned Super micro mother board? https://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/C236_C232/X11SSH-CTF.cfm It comes with 8 SATA ports and 8 SAS ports via a LSI 3008 controller on the board. Benefits of this is no fuss with extra card(s) and total price is a bit lower as buying a regular SM board + extra controller. If you buy everything new.. But when I search the forum for the unraid compatibility with LSI 3008 controller I have limited answers. Is this board and controller supported by unraid or is it better to go for a setup with a motherboard + extra controller.
  25. See the link provided in the other topic you have created for a minimum. https://lime-technology.com/hardware-requirements/ My first unraid server was an old computer I start using as a server. So it can be really cheap if you want. Especially if you only want to use it as a data backup with a limited # of hard drives. But for a 30 drive system it will never be cheap. You needed more expensive hardware for that.
