  1. Rather than power my server off to save power, what might be useful would be to restrict when my dockers will be active... so I dont want Arrs doing their thang at certain hours and no downloads etc... so... what about activating my dockers on a schedule?

Anyone able to do that? Or see the value?

    Hi all,

    That was exactly my problem.

    The card finally works.

    BEYIMEI PCI-E 4X zu 6-Port SATA3.0 Erweiterungskarte,6 Gbit/s SATA 3.0 PCIe-Karte,PCIe zu SATA-Controller-Erweiterungskarte (ASM1166)

    Thank you for the effort.

Works AND allows you to run powertop --auto-tune and get better power saving?

EDIT: Was able to flash my identical card using the Silverstone sourced firmware... have enabled power saving and will wait and see if I lose a random HDD again from the array

I have a question about the ASMedia chipset ASM1061 for PCIe 2.0 x1 to dual SATA at 500 MB/s each, which is perfect for SATA SSDs at (almost) full speed:

No... it is not.. PCIE 2.0 x1 means a total of 500MB/s bandwidth split over 2 ports.. so fine for HDDs but will bottleneck SSDs.

    PCIE 1.0 250MB/s/lane

    PCIE 2.0 500MB/s/lane

    PCIE 3.0 1000MB/s/lane (appx)

I bought "Die-Wu ASM1166 6 port SATA PCIEx2 adapter from aliexpress" it has red heatsink and red SATA ports on back of card.

In mean time ordered ECS06 just in case and to be honest it's not always an easy task to upgrade this ASM1166.

Even with SilverStone I had couple failes when software didn't recognize my card properly, found out that I already had latest firmware on ECS06 but flashed in anyway - if there are any problems just start flashing software once again until it'll say "It can take some time to detect devices - please be patient".

So let's dive into Die-Wu -> it was not recognized (used same software that came with ECS06) - and firmware was outdated from 2019, but I managed to flash it without any major issues - now it has same firmware (you can check this on POST screen).

where did you get the firmware and flasher to update the ASM1166 - I have this one https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005225401697.html but it doesnt like me using Powertop --autotune so maybe new firmware will help??

  5. Thanks Jorge :-)  I should know this having tinkered with unRAID for some years... I leave, use something else and keep coming back.  My rebuild time started super slow but now speeds up to only 1 day 14 hours. That's wiped out any attempts at power saving.

I know its a different topic but I really cannot find reliable info on how to optimize a server for power saving with unRAID.

That has been known to cause issues with some controllers, try running with that disabled for some time.

OK will do... (how do I get the parity disk back though?)   but ideally want to use some power saving if at all possible. My server sits idle most of the time. If I could work out a way to have my dockers only load and active on a schedule I could have the machine truly idle...

  7. I have powertune --autotune set to run which puts all things in lowest power settings... do I need a new PSU then? I find the "loose" connection unlikely.. its not like the machine moves...     These sorta issues are the worst... Be much easier if it was an easy "replace X"...    I do have an LSI SAS2308 card but didnt want to use it cos it will idle at 5-10W more than the ASM1166.     Ideally want a S1151 board with 12 SATA ports.. heck ANY Intel 8th or newer with 12 SATA ports

Logs are being spammed with ATA messages from a couple of disks, makes it difficult to see anything else, they are not errors, but also not normal, maybe a controller issue.

Disk dropped, so the SMART report is empty.

I have onboard Intel SATA and a (yes, you guessed) Chinese controller PCIEx4 ASM1166 with 6 SATA ports on. I'd guess its either that faulty or some BIOS setting thats allowing that to drop out? Or a driver issue?

How do I get the disk to "undrop" then? Sorry, dont like feeling I need to be spoonfed but I think i need it

  9. I did get the expected red X but unfortunately now I seem to be getting that old unRAID problem where the webUI goes rogue and doesnt display all elements so I cannot see my drives and requesting diagnostics has been stuck at "Downloading... /boot/logs/uberserver-diagnostics-20240405-1741.zip" for 15minutes now

At times I really HATE unRAID. Thankfully not all the time!

What is the emulated drive in Unraid showing?   Whatever appears there is what would appear if you rebuilt the drive.

when you say the drive is ‘empty’ is that looking at in Unraid array or somewhere else?

You are likely to get better informed feedback if you attach your system’s diagnostics zip file to your next post in this thread. It is always a good idea when asking questions to supply your diagnostics so we can see details of your system, how you have things configured, and the current syslog.

I havent even checked what emulated drive shows (but I assume it will be all my files - I trust unRAID). The drive itself, attached in RO to Kubuntu and mounted shows empty

I'll put it back in unRAID and look again and add diagnostics

    SMART looks fine.

Thanks. I thought so... so do I just assume unRAID had a brain-freeze and put drive back in the rebuild it from parity and other drives?  I'm a bit freaked out that the drive is empty.. why would that happen?! And why would it not just happen again?

  12. My first disk in the array (less than a year old) has suddenly dropped out. Server is off(line) while I look at disk and decide if I need a new one. I swapped cables, SATA ports etc and it didnt reappear. Just shows as Red X and reported 300+ errors during parity check.

So popped HDD into a 2nd PC running Kubuntu, powered on and it is seen, mounted it and looked at SMART report (attached). Disk is showing as Empty!?

Is this disk toast? No reallocated sectors... so wondering why it is empty?

    Appreciate some help, suggestions etc

  13. Necro this thread as I am surprised there isnt more discussion on HOW to optimize a system for power usage.

Powertop isnt installed by default so you need NerdTools to install it.

BIOS settings - which are needed (ASPM on but any others) ???

sudo lspci -vv | awk '/ASPM/{print $0}' RS= | grep --color -P '(^[a-z0-9:.]+|ASPM )'   to identify stuff that needs tweaks?

Then some script needed to force some devices to enable ASPM like    https://gist.github.com/baybal/b499fc5811a7073df0c03ab8da4be904

I have no idea really and was hoping one of the gurus could come to the rescue?

  14. I have this problem every time I reinstall Windows, despite having automated "fixes" like adding the registry entry. What would be REALLY useful would be script to create that Network Neighborhood and do the other fixes. So a Windows 10/11 user can just run it....

I've done everything except that so far and nothing works... so Network Neighborhood time for me now.
