  1. Hi Tom, This WHS add-on looks very interesting! Well done! In my usage, which is unRAID for DVD rips, music backups, and photo backups, and then WHS for running SageTV and short term TV recordings storage, the 'live' music share, the 'live' photo share, and of course PC client backups. Can this system backup the WHS "system" drive as well? Can it be scripted to leave unRAID on all the time, yet still backup the music and photo shares on a scheduled basis? Thanks for any info! -PGPfan
  2. Try www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10226&cs_id=1022601&p_id=2514&seq=1&format=2&style=. I've used them MANY times and they are a GREAT company to deal with - that is, if you are in the US. -PGPfan

What would you want to do with capability? I would use them as the storage for my HDTV streams. This would allow me to use multiple drives in the system and get better write performance. I don't have a need to have my tv recordings under parity protection, but at the same time I want a single media server for all my media clients to point to. At the same time I would use the protected drives for storing recordings that I do want protected. I second your thoughts entirely! Tom, any thoughts on a possible ETA? -PGPfan
  4. Based on what I've read, it's a 'Windows' only thing, meaning it will only stream to Windows approved devices. That is strike 1. Next is that is only available with new hardware, ie - you have to buy the thing 'precanned'. Strike 2. It does have a nice built-in backup system/method. It'd be nice to see Tom add something comparable to our unRaids. Overall, it really offers very little that we don't already have. At least Microsoft (and the general public as a result) will start to recognize the unique benefits that an unRaid like approach to the 'Raid' concept provides. No need to be one of the drones that waste money at making an 'enterprise lite' hardware Raid 5 system for the home. -PGPfan
  5. Hi DigitalDivide, Tom has stated already that once he's done with expanding the features of "User Shares" to include full read AND write that he'll be creating a webpage to better explain it all. As for how it works now, if you use your 3 drives as examples then you create a 'Movie' share in each one. In each one you have a folder for each movie title which contains the actual movie files. Now, if you enable User Shares then you can simply view the contents of the "Movie" share and in it you will see ALL movies as though they are on one disk. It works well, but you can't write to that share. To write, you'd have to use something like: Disk2/Movies/[title of new folder]. Does this help? -PGPfan
  6. I vote a definate NO. This whole 'stigma' thing is, frankly bullshit. The guys hasn't been convicted of anything and here we are running around as though he is guilty. Shame on us. Who cares about guilt or innocense when it comes to using reiserfs? My computer doesn't really care, nor do I. It's like the crap about removing all images of the 'twin towers' from all software, movies, etc. after 9/11 and stil saying 'we will never forget'! There are WAY more important things to accomplish on 'ye olde laundry list' than to try and do the 'politically correct' thing. If reiserfs is the best, then keep using it! Sorry for the rant, but this whole politically correct attitude that society is taking lately REALLY pisses me off. -PGPfan
  7. Hi gnollo, Just go to http://www.lime-technology.com/wordpress/?page_id=33 and you'll find all the instruction you need to gather the correct info for Tom. -PGPfan
  8. Regarding the 4-into-3 cages, I understand that these are designed for the "Stacker" case. Do you guys that have them have any opinion how difficult it might be to use these cages in some other case? I'm leaning towards one of the 'cube' style server cases by YeongYang and would like to use them if possible. Thanks! -PGPfan
  9. For copying my personal DVD's to my server there is no question (to me, at least) that the best s/w to use is AnyDVD. Totally transparent to Windows and makes copying truly a 'drag and drop' activity. Always updated (for free!), and does far more than what you might think it could do. Go to www.slysoft.com for more details. -PGPfan
  10. Thanks Dave for the update. I'd much rather Tom get the much needed rest than to risk burning out just for the update. We know it is coming very soon, that's good enough for me. -PGPfan
  11. I'd agree totally with dschur, except that I'd change question 3. What about the customer support (I mean personal support instead of thru' this forum)? to a 3. I agree with the disappearance being disconcerting, but forum aside Tom has NEVER failed to reply quickly to any emails for support I've ever had to make. P.S. - It would be great to see the 'multiple read/write performance' better so I could use my unRaid as the direct storage for my SageTV PVR instead of having to do 'late night transfers' of the shows I want to keep. Otherwise, it's been GREAT. -PGPfan
  12. Hi Joe, Thanks for the reply! I guess I don't really need it after all. Regarding the YAC client script, any chance you could post a quick 'how-to' on setting that up? I'd love to be able to have the same thing on my server. -PGPfan
  13. First off, thanks Tom for the update! Was a piece of cake to install. One question, however. Although I haven't run into any trouble booting my unRaid, I didn't see the 'fix18' script anywhere in the updated .zip file. Am I looking in the wrong place? Thanks again! (Both Tom, and Joe L.) -PGPfan
  14. Hi Mike, When you say you talked to Tom today, do you mean via e-mail? I assume you'd have mentioned this thread to him (and asked if he's coming back) if you actually spoke to him. -PGPfan
  15. Teamhood, It may not apply in your case, but I'd make sure that there aren't any envelopes or anything in any packing materials. When I got my USB stick, I was surprised how small it is. It came in a manila 8.5 x 11 enveleope with a couple sheets of info regarding system setup. I hope you do find it! -PGPfan
