  1. No storms or anything... It just randomly wasn't connected to the network when I tried to watch a movie so I went and checked the server. Everything was powered on so I went on my comp and tried to go to the GUI but it wasn't connecting. Manually rebooted the server and still no success. So I pulled the server out and noticed the flash drive wasn't blinking.
  2. I finally get some time to watch a movie tonight and the server isn't connecting to the network!! I can't access it through my media players or computers. I hooked up a monitor to the server and can't even get into the BIOS. It doesn't look like the server is booting up. The flash drive light isn't blinking so I thought maybe it died. I plugged it into my Mac and it still works and I can access all the folders in the flash drive. I tried rebooting the server several times but nothing happens. I thought maybe the motherboard died but the lights on the mother board are on and the fan to the cpu is spinning. I tried installing the flash drive into different USB Ports on the server but the light on the flash drive doesn't start flashing. The server isn't recognizing it for some reason. Anyone know what is going on here? The server was just working last week.
  3. I tried this and still no luck getting "Tower" to show up on my comps. I've only had unRAID for maybe a month now. "Tower" was showing up no problem. Just all of a sudden it disappeared and I can't get it back. Could setting's in unRAID just randomly change on their own causing the Tower not to show up now?
  4. Someone else also told me that worked for them. Do I just unplug the router and plug it back in? I have a router from AT&T U-Verser. Its a 2-Wire Gateway
  5. I can go into my shares through \\tower\movies I currently just made a shortcut icon on my desktop to the "Tower" But I would like to have it where it shows up under my network like it originally was.
  6. It is set to yes, always has been.. Thats why I don't understand why all of a sudden "Tower" isn't showing up. Like I said its been working fine all along until today. And I haven't changed any settings so not sure whats going on.
  7. I can access the shares if I directly type in \\tower\movies but as soon as I close the windows the Tower disappears from the Network. Again this just happened today. Its been connecting to my w7 PC and Macs and PCH Players no problem. I tried going into my servers MB Bios to make sure nothing had somehow got changed. Everything looks good and server boots up no problem. My w7 workgroup name is WORKGROUP. In web gui settings I've tried workgroup, Workgroup, WORKGROUP and nothings working. I put a "Towers" shortcut icon on my desktop to have quick access to my files. I need Tower to show up though.
  8. Yes the array is online, I can connect through web gui no problem Just can't access "Tower"
  9. My unRAID server all of a sudden isn't connecting to my network. I can't access shares from my PC or Mac. I can still connect to the web gui no problem. I've tried restarting all the comps and the server several times but thats not working. Everything was working fine yesterday.
  10. I just installed a Parity drive yesterday. The drive installed fine and it says 0 errors. I ran a parity check after and it says 233 errors. Not sure whats going on.. I attached a Syslog Untitled.doc
  11. Now that I have all my files from my WHS transferred onto unRAID I'm ready to install Eversion + YAMJ. I had it installed directly on my WHS before. I know I can install it on my Desktop PC and direct YAMJ to my unRAID shares. But, can YAMJ be installed directly into unRAID? Reason I liked having YAMJ installed on my WHS instead of my PC is because I could run the YAMJ.CMD as a daily schedule task to constantly update my movie jukebox. Can unRAID run schedule tasks also? If my PC stayed on 24/7 I would just install it on there and run scheduled tasks daily. Need some advice...
  12. I don't know about putting it in unRAID but you can go the route that I did. Build the unRAID Server. Then build an inexpensive pc in a HTPC Case. Ripping movies doesn't take a lot of CPU so inexpensive computer will get the job done. And building it in an HTPC case allows you to have it sit nicely with your other AV Gear. After thats build purchase AnyDVD HD. Then purchase the "Copy Disc" feature from MyMovies and install it on Windows Media Center. After thats all setup you just turn on your HTPC, Pop in the Disc, Hit Copy Disc and the ripping process will start. MyMovies will add the Cover Art and Metadata for you also.
  13. So besides a Cache drive and a WD Black HDD is there anything else I can do to get faster transfer speeds from pc to server?
  14. Seen on this spec http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/SpecSheet/ENG/2879-701276.pdf, the 2tb wb black hdd is indeed can theoretically saturate the gigabits network. And i was proven wrong. Thanks for the headup. As for ssd, not all ssd can saturate gbits network. seen here are the intel ssd that can saturate the gbits network. lower spec and capacity most likely can not saturate gbits network. As for "ignore your "appeal to authority" logical fallacy", i take that as very offensive argument from you, a person who doesnt know how to differentiate between bit and bytes. Offensive? Ironic perhaps, amusing or disingenuous even ... but offensive? Come on pal ... have a thicker skin. You made an assertion and then announced, "I know this because its my day job." Look at my link, that is almost the literal definition of an Appeal to Authority ... and you were wrong. As for my not knowing bits and bytes ... oh have no fear I know those. Mb vs MB ... yeah I know those too, but I caught myself in a units abbreviation mistake, admitted to it, left it unedited, and then even poked a little fun at myself. As to the actual issue at hand ... it doesn't take a 2TB to saturate a Gb network ... at least not for the first portion of the spinner as I mentioned with my 640GB. And any SSD that can't saturate a Gb without even breaking a sweat is an SSD not worth the money. Another reason to spend your money on a larger HHD vs an SSD: If you get one the same size as your Parity then it can even act as a spare for a quick swap to limit unprotected downtime. It will also give you time to shop around for a replacement on-sale. Important in this time of high HDD prices. I'm curious, exactly what do you consider a saturated Gb network? Because 125MB/s is the theoretical limit and 111MB/s is the max practical at least according to Tom's Hardware http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gigabit-ethernet-bandwidth,2321-7.html. Sooo to answer the OP's questions with facts and not guesses ... an SSD cache is a waste of money and it is limited by the network on writes. Save the money and get a spinner drive that will still saturate your network for at least half of its capacity and then give your extra "slower" capacity beyond what you'd have gotten with a smaller SSD. That will even help avoid any problems with the Cache filling up. FYI, what happens when your cache fills up? http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Un-Official_UnRAID_Manual#Min._Free_Space and http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=16715.0 If you find yourself in this position, the first solution is to increase mover frequency until you can increase your cache drive size. Thanks guys! I'll pass on a SSD Cache and look into a WD Black when prices come back down. For now I'll use one of my WD EADS drives as a Cache. How about on the PC side.. Would a SSD be any benefit on the PC side of things? Or should I looked into another type of drive?
  15. Now that my unRAID server is up and running and I'm almost done transferring files. I am going to install a left over 2TB drive as a Cache drive. First I have a few questions.. 1. Will a SSD Cache give me faster transfer speeds? 2. If I rip a Blu-Ray over my network directly into unRAID instead of ripping directly to my PC and then transferring it to unRAID.. Will I get faster transfer speeds with a SSD? 3. What happens if you fill up your Cache drive? Are you just unable to transfer anymore data? Here is the SSD I am looking into. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004W2JKZI/ref=s9_simh_gw_p147_d0_g147_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1NZD96VATPV6GK6KFRF1&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846
  16. Is there anything specific I need to do to get gige speeds? My WHS is gige and I believe so is my unRAID server. As long as all cables and switches are cat5e I should get gige speeds? Is there anything I need to do in the settings to get these speeds?
  17. Teracopy is on my PC.. Should I install it on my WHS instead? Yes, I would That's not something I've done. I understand the app can be paused but I'd wait for someone else to advise on this. At this point I'm thinking of deleting the files i transferred and starting over. I really want to get my transfer speeds up.
  18. Can I pause Teracopy, power down the unraid server and move it to the switch that my PC and WHS is on? Teracopy has transferred a little over 500gb. Should I delete those files and retransfer everything once I get my network worked out? Link speed is managed by many factors. If hardware is functioning normally and good drivers are installed you should operate at optimal speeds. I would connect the WHS server and the unRaid server on a gige switch alone. If the unraid server is a gig speed that's where I would connect the WHS box. The new link connection should auto negotiate a faster speed. Like this you can isolate the slower links speeds from the faster. You should be able to interconnect the 2 switches with a ethernet cable and maintain the speeds on each switch.
  19. Teracopy is on my PC.. Should I install it on my WHS instead?
  20. not true. you cannot switch it faster, unless you originally switched it lower from the faster speed. Any idea why I'm getting such slow speeds?
  21. When you say check the link speed are you referring to the task manager on my PC then the networking tab? If so it says Link Speed is 100 Mbps. Which would explain the slow transfers.. How do I change it to 1000mb/s? And if i go into my WHS (HP MediaSmart Server) and click task manager, networking it says Link Speed 1Gbps My Mac Mini which is hooked up wireless says Link Speed- 54 Mbit/s My iMac is ethernet connected and says 100 Mbit/s
  22. Just did a test. Paused Teracopy and copied over a 18GB movie from whs to unRaid and I'm only getting 10mb/s. 5mb/s more than with Teracopy. This is still really slow. I'm using netgear gs108 switches around the house and a dlink dgs-2205. So not sure why I'm getting these slow speeds. My whs consists of a 4 bay HP MediaSmart Server with a 4 bay esata enclosure and a 4 bay USB enclosure. Also I transferred a 15GB movie from my PC to unRaid and only 11.2mb/s.
  23. http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-ProSafe-Gigabit-Ethernet-Desktop/dp/B00006RVPW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330160625&sr=8-1 That is the switch that unraid server is hooked up to right now.
