  1. I was having trouble getting the new driver installed as well. I do have a 10G network card installed and so I went down that path trying to figure out if it was the issue. I did the same sort of troubleshooting as others. Changed from static to DHCP, messed with MTU and verified I wasn't doing any bonding. After all that I remembered I had re-installed my Sophos Endpoint protection a few days ago on my main PC I use to access the GUI. I disabled my endpoint protection it and it downloaded and installed the driver without issue. At no time did it ever tell me it was blocking anything. Just wanted to throw this out there as another possible work around for people having issues. Im sure this is probably mentioned previously somewhere in this thread, and if so I must have missed it. I would not have thought my endpoint protection on my PC would affect the GUI of Unraid in my browser when it tried to download and install a driver. You learn something new everyday.
  2. Here's a few pics of how I made mine work for me... Brilliant! I just may have to copy your setup. I assume its WAY quieter than before since you don't have the 20mm fans on the power supplies spinning like they're ready for take off? Yes you do lose the power supply redundancy but since myself and probably everyone else here runs a UPS its a non issue. Thanks for sharing.
  3. Yes this runs unRAID out of the box with zero issues. The second CPU is really your call. I am only running the a single 6 core opteron and it does what I need to do. Yes the 6 core version works after the bios upgrade. Those are Barcelona core socket F so I don't see any reason why they wouldn't work ESXi does work however this hardware DOES NOT support hardware passthrough. So its a no go for a desirable unRAID setup with ESXi.
  4. To me one of the key reasons I didn't go with the Xeon board was there are no PCIe slots on that board. That was a big future expansion possibility issue in my opinion. Other than that I didn't see anything else that would've steered me away.
  5. I'm down for that, but not really sure what to change it to? Any ideas anyone? On a side note, I checked out my 2nd cpu socket and didn't notice any bent pins or anything. I didn't buy two cpus though so Im not too concerned about it.
  6. I used the onboard prior to the new cpu to do some esxi testing, but not since I swapped the cpu and had no issues. If it were in one of the bays though unless you moved a cable they would all go to the sata cards in the PCI-X slots. Could be a loose sata cable or even a possible issue with the back plane.
  7. I can't see any reason why if 1 CPU works the 2nd CPU wouldn't.
  8. Thats a bummer. Mine had 3 power cords included. If they were there you couldn't miss them, they were brand new and individually packaged. The good news is you should be able to get them locally fairly cheap. Its just a standard C13 to 3 prong same as any other PC.
  9. Im only using 1 CPU and it booted into unraid with zero issues. Working like a champ right now.
  10. I did that, and I hit F11 for Boot Manager to double force the sucker to use that drive. Nothing worked, not even when I used an additional PS/2 KB (finding that one was fun). I got a glimpse of what the system was trying to boot into each time: IPMI card. I believe if I would have removed that IPMI card I would have had less problems. I can't wait for the real one to get in so I can do proper KVM on this monster. More good news: 1.0b is the latest firmware for these SAT2-MW8 systems. Only thing I need to do now is update the BIOS on the MB and start the installation of drives. What a PIA. Any time the power is completely removed from the server for an extended period of time, when you first boot it up it initializes the IPMI card. It takes about 60 seconds and then reboots again. Is that what you're talking about? You can't do anything until it reboots after the IPMI card is initialized. Are you getting the full screen supermicro logo or are you seeing actual POST information? You may see things different than me though as I have a kb and monitor hooked directly in and it sounds like you might be connected remotely? I havent had any issues whatsoever and I have had it boot from 3 different flash drives. One to update the bios, one that has my unRAID install, and one with esxi on it to play around a bit.
  11. I know on mine I have to go into the bios -> boot and select hard drives. Under there for some reason is where its puts everything. My USB drive was like number 7 or 8 on the list. Make it number 1 and then go to boot priority and you can then pick the USB as the first boot drive. It was confusing, but it worked.
  12. :( :( :( That is a bummer. I guess there goes my plans of attempting to run unRAID under Esxi. I have installed 5.0 right now but it will not do hardware passthrough (posting from my first VM now) and I was hoping that changing to the new processor might fix that as I believe "istanbul" core is capable of AMD-Vi. It also might be that the motherboard can't do it but my Googlefu is failing me on that. Either way... Yeah.
  13. One more thing regarding the bios upgrade. The files do not automatically create a bootable USB flash. I created a 98 boot disk flash drive and then copied over the bios files. It flashed with no issues. If you need instructions on making a bootable USB flash look here - http://www.bay-wolf.com/usbmemstick.htm. You are also correct on there not being CPU mount on the second CPU slot. Although from looking Im not sure its necessary to remove the board as there are two threaded posts that it looks like you just screw the bracket into from the top.
  14. No worries on the CPU issue. Just snapped this picture.
  15. i hate to be a bit stupid, but you can't really install two of these can you? i assume there's only room for one cpu? i bought one of these used servers but have not received yet, but i think you're just kidding? also, i guess you have to install a floppy drive first, unless you can put the floppy disk image onto the usb somehow? can anyone post back when they've successfully installed this cpu? I have mine already and can indeed confirm that there are two CPU sockets on this motherboard. I have opted to stay with a single CPU personally. Im just going to swap the current 2212 with the 2419 from Ebay. Four more cores for 15 bucks is a heck of a deal IMO.
  16. Nice. Ordered one up myself. Thats a no brainer at 15.00 shipped. Thanks for the heads up!
  17. I think I found the rail kit - It is part # SR-26R for 2u to 5U chassis. Might be hard to find in stock though. I wasnt too worried about remote KVM access since mine is in my basement and I can hook up it anytime but would be nice to have ILO/DRAC like connectivity if its in your company's data center. Im already running unRAID on this CPU with no issues whatsoever, I have quite a few addons but none of them that CPU intensive so I might not be a good reference. If you get 2 CPU's you will also need to either buy more RAM or split it up with 4GB on each CPU. Im curious as to what you are actually using this server for if your going to colo it in your company's data center. I would think transfer rates to and from unRAID will be abyssmal across the cloud. Maybe I misunderstood what you meant?
  18. ordrered mine on friday, 2 emails into TAM and nothing. Just from counting, I hope you end up with one. They had 5, I ordered 1, burr ordered 1 and is getting another 1 for shipping damage. Thats 3, plus Grither ordered 1 and mikejp ordered 1. Counting your order that is 6 total. Either they had more than 5 or someone is going to be disappointed.
  19. I ordered mine on 02/22 they sent a tracking number on 02/23 and shipped it out that same day as well.
  20. Yes, mine did come with power cords. I ordered the same screws that burr did from Amazon. His link is better as they were a little cheaper than what I paid. I also ordered these fans http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811999615 and put them in and they work well. Its still pretty loud with the power supply fans but swapping out the 60mm fans cut the db levels in half if not more.
  21. Server came today. It was well packaged came just as described. I shutdown my old server and pulled all the drives. Added them to the new server and booted it up. I did have to initially attach a keyboard and monitor to it so I could set the USB flash as the boot drive. Booted right into unRAID with no issues at all. I will say that this thing is LOUD. The 2 60mm fans in the back are on full blast non stop. I have already ordered some quieter ones that hopefully don't jeopardize the cooling too much. unRAID only picks up one of the two NIC's so you must have the cable in the NIC on the right side if your facing the back of the server. There were no screws at all for the hard drive cages to attach the drives. I got lucky and the screws from my 4 in 3 setup on my old server did work but you basically need completely flat headed screws. For the price I have zero complaints. It was an easy upgrade and its humming along nicely right now. Im in the process of preclearing the first of three new drives to add into my array. Two thumbs up from this guy.
  22. I did finally get a reply from the seller on the motherboard and its a Supermicro H8DME-2 which has the MCP55 Pro chipset on it. Details here: http://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/motherboard/Opteron2000/MCP55/H8DME-2.cfm I did a quick search on the forum and found one post where someone did succesfully use an MCP55 chipset with unRAID already so I went ahead and bit the bullet. There were actually 5 when I originally posted, but I ordered one and so did my coworker. I'll keep everyone updated on how it works out. The shipping was pretty steep but I expected it at 77lbs. I just hope they packed it up well.
  23. Long time lurker, first time poster. I've had a rock solid unRAID setup mostly unchanged for going on 3 years now. No issues really other than the occasional addition of a drive here and there but nothing else major to speak of. I'm currently out of slots to add more hard drives and have a choice to make. Right now I have a CM Stacker 810 case with an Athlon 64 5200+ on a Gigabyte board with 1 GB RAM. Im rolling with one 4 in 3 cage and 3 Icy dock drive bays and using one internal bay for a total of 8 drives. I have been slowly getting HD failures over the last couple of years and I normally just swap a new in and go. I'm finally getting around to RMA'ing those drives and as such, I now need space for 4 more 1TB drives when they arrive from Seagate. I also would like some space for future array expansion. I need to retire the old Icy Dock drive bays as the fans have seen better days. I would also need to purchase another controller card of some sort as I only have two ports left. My choice would most likely be an AOC-SASL-MV8 PCIe card. My initial thought was add in 2 of the 5 in 3 cages buy a new controller and call it a day. Then I thought heck if I'm going to upgrade it might as well be an UPGRADE. I started looking into the Norco 4224. While doing my research on the Norco though, I found a thread over on AVS with a link to this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Custom-Dual-Core-AMD-Opteron-2-0GHz-8GB-DDR2-160GB-IDE-Server-/170762230144?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27c238d980 Its a used 24 bay rack mount server with an Opteron 2212 processor, 8 GB RAM, 2 PCIe slots, 4 PCI-X slots, some really loud looking fans and 3 power supplies. My guess is its been sitting in someones data center for a few years and finally lost its home to an equipment refresh project. The kicker to me is it has 3 AOC-SAT2-MV8 cards installed as well. Normally I am all about roll your own hardware as to me, hell that's half fun. In this case though, I'm kind of considering the ready to go option. Slap my hard drives in this baby plug in my flash drive and I'm off to the races. I searched for a couple of hours on the forum to see if anyone else has used one of these and came up empty. So that leads us to here, where I ask all of you your thoughts on this. Anyone see any shortcoming with this behemoth? I have a nice spot picked out for it in the basement away from the main living area where it will get to hang out and be friends with the rest of the loud and unruly equipment. I've recently put my equipment rooms green initiative on hold for now, so I'm not to worried about the power requirements. I strictly use my unRAID box for movie and picture storage so my demands are pretty small. Max use would be 3 connections streaming BR's or MKV's to the HTPC or extenders. Typical usage is just one connection streaming a BR. I've rambled on long enough. I've pretty much talked myself into it, but would hate to get it and it not be compatible with unRAID. So thoughts, suggestions, opinions? Just upgrade what I've got or pick this thing up? **Edited thread title to reflect the discussion change**
