Allocation method

Am I doing something wrong, or this behavior is by design?

Unraid v. 4.5.6

User share: Movies

Allocation method: High-water

Min. free space: 20000000

Split level: 3

Directory structure:

              Movies
               /|\
             English
            /   |     \
     BluRay    DVDs  Series
       /|\
Title1 Title2, etc.

Now the strange thing:

2 disks, Disk 1 - 2Tb, Disk 2 - 1Tb

Disk 1 has 750Gb free, Disk 2 is empty.

All files with destination of \\storage\Movies\English\BluRay keep on going to Disk 1  ???

it's by design.

high-water works by first dividing the largest disc in half and sets this as the high_water mark. all data will go to this drive until this mark is reached, and then to another, which still has enough free space to be over this mark.

so in your case, the first mark is at 1TB. so the 2TB drive will be filled, until 1 TB space is left. Then it searches for another drive with more than 1 TB free space.

When there is no other drive, the high_water mark will be divided in half again.

so this time, data goes to this drive, until there is only 500 GB space left. and after that, the data will go to the next drive, until there is only 500 GB left.

Aha! This is the part I missed!

Thank you for this explanation!
