Your opinion/thoughts on parts for my upgrage......

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Recently my unRaid setup (5 years old) had turned itself off and now when the tower turns on nothing happens. It simply doesn’t boot.

I have ruled out the USB as I did a fresh install on another USB and same problem.

Instead of trying to work out the exact problem (I’m not to tech savvy), which I will assume will be either the motherboard or CPU, I’ll just replace it as it is getting old anyway.

Before I start spending cash, my question is: will I have any problems with the following parts? I use it for mainly data storage and to download NZB’s/torrents. Might consider playing around with VM’s sometime in the future.

  • ASRock X570 Steel Legend Motherboard or ASRock X570 Phantom Gaming 4 Motherboard
  • AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6Ghz AM4 with Wraith Cooler
  • Corsair Vengeance LPX -16GB

Cheers cam

What does this mean exactly?  Nothing at all happens and pressing the power button will not turn it on?

This sounds exactly like a problem I recently had.  It was a failing power supply.  Pushing the power button resulted in nothing at all.  If I turned off the power at the power supply and disconnected the cable and let it sit for 30 minutes, when I plugged it back in and turned it on, it booted normally.  10-15 minutes later it would just shut down again and play dead until I repeated the above procedure.

Replaced power supply and all is good now.

Do you have a spare power supply you could try?  That's what I did to verify the problem was the PSU.  Everything worked normally with a spare I had laying around from a past build.

Are you seeing anything at all when you attempt to power it on?  If so, what?

The LEDs and Fans turn on. I believe at least one driver starts spinning but nothing else. Once in the past I have had the server randomly shutdown and I have had to turn the PSU off and on again to make it go again but it has been solid since..... I am assuming if it was a PSU problem, the fans and LEDs wouldn't be working....but that is just my assuming.

My ASRock Rack LGA 1150 server board just died the other after 5 years of 24/7 running. Suddenly unRAID got some bad disk and I thought it must be due to the HDD going back. I turned off, and after that the system never able to boot again.

Same symptoms as yours. LED/Fans turn on but it will never go into BIOS. I checked with IPMI, and the screen just stay at "system initialization". I tried everything including removing the CMOS...etc nothing worked.

Now I have to hunt for new board/CPU/RAM now =(

Not necessarily, it could just be that it is now only delivering enough power for those to function but not to boot the system.  It could also be that your motherboard or CPU have indeed failed.   Unless you have a good voltmeter and know how to use it safely with the PSU and motherboard, about the only way to know for sure is to replace them and see if that fixes the issue.

If it is not just a PSU problem, I am more inclined to believe the motherboard is the issue rather than the CPU.   If you want to go ahead and get new parts, the ones you have listed are fine for your stated use.  Just be aware of potential Ryzen issues and follow the recommendations for BIOS settings and RAM speed in that link.

Rightio,

Thanks guys. I have a mate who will lend me a PSU, i'll throw in and test. If the problem still exists i'll get the parts I have listed. Thanks for the info on Ryzen issues Hoopster, I was unware of those issues.

Cheers,

Cam
