OK, it's back now under 4.2.1.  I thought it was licked with the latest build but I'm still getting it, though it seems like less often. I got it this time while authoring a DVD directly to an unraid user share.

Anyone else still having this issue with 4.2.1?

No problems here. What network card do you have?

I've been stressing my server with 4.2.1 for the past few days with constant ftp, bittorrent and dvd ISO image activity.

No issues at all here.

I suggest you check for newest drivers for your windows machine as well. Also if you are using jumbo frames on gbit lan i suggest you disable them just for a test because what's i've read some gbit switches don't actually work really well with them even though they say they support them.

It's the embedded NIC on the ASUS P5B-VM DO. It connects directly to a DLink gigabit switch. The workstation I'm using uses the embedded controller on the ASUS P5W-DH Deluxe, also connected directly to the switch.  The workstation runs Vista Ultimate.  I'm not inclined to lay the blame on the workstation or the switch, as I regularly copy large (4 GB+) files back and forth from another SageTV server and another file server with no issue. Only unRAID causes me issues.

It's not a regular failure, meaning I can't duplicate it at will. For instance I just repeated the process that had cause it to crap out earlier, and this time it finished. Fortunately it doesn't really cause me excessive grief as it only occurs when copying TO the server. Streaming media down from the server has never been a problem.

I'd suspect vista as much as anything else...

I've read of similar sounding disconnects when accessing vista from MG-35 media players. (after 20 30 minutes, connection is broken.) So far, they have no solution but to wait for MS to issue a fix.

So... could be Vista, network card, MS network card driver, lan cabling, router/switch, unRaid network card, Llinux network card driver, or samba daemon process.

4.2.1 fixed one specific problem very last item in the list.  That still leaves a whole lot to be possibilities, including any possible, but different, bug still hiding in the samba daemon process.

Could be, though in my case it'd have to be an unRAID-specific Vista issue. As I said, I routinely tranfer large files to and from this Vista PC to my SageTV server (WinXP) and another file server (2003 Server), all through the same switch. I never suffer disconnects with those, or if I do they must be able to reconnect and carry on without my noticing. Only going to unRAID do I have problems.

It also seems to occur more when authoring a DVD directly to the server. If I author the DVD to a local drive and then copy it up, I don't seem to have the problem.

Fortunately it's not a crippling issue in my case and easily worked around. But if there's a solution that would allow me to move on without a workaround, then so much the better.

I have the same motherboard as you do and i don't have any problems with it. But maybe i haven't stressed unRAID enough. Anyway D-Link makes lot of crappy hardware so might be your switch too. I don't use Vista at all so can't test unRAID with it. How about this use \\your unraid ip here\your share instead of \\tower\your share. Maybe it's bug in samba netbios stuff and vista can't find your unRAID via name.

Btw do you use any firewall software other than those coming with vista? I read somewhere once that symantec firewall on Vista was causing something like this.

Nope. In fact I don't even use the Vista firewall because I'm reckless.  ::)

I can certainly try that, but I'd think some sort of name resolution issue would manifest itself immediately, not 60% into a copy. But it's an easy thing to try so I will. For the record, I am running both a WINS server and a DNS server with unRAID properly registered in both.

Yeah, DLink makes some crappy stuff, but I still have to come back to the issue only occurring with unRAID and not any of the other 4 machines on the same switch.

Just wondering something. Did you use that samba server fix in the other thread where you added stuff to go script so you can use samba 2.0.24 or 2.0.26a? Just wondering maybe you did that and upgraded to unRAID 4.2.1 and still have that stuff in your go script to go back to samba 2.0.24?

Nope. I never attempted the fix that was discussed in the other thread. I went straight from an un-monkyed-with 4.2 beta 4 to 4.2.1. I skipped the initial 4.2 release because I knew that the fix wasn't implemented in that one. I never had this issue with 4.1 by the way. It started with one of the 4.2 betas.

Looks like I'm the only one so far still having this issue. I guess I'll just try different things here (outside of unraid) and see if I can make any difference. It's just tough to troubleshoot something that can't be reproduced with any regularity.

Did you get any errors in unRAID logs when those disconnects happened?

I'm still having the same problem as well.  I was operating under the assumption that it was a memory problem, but that has been ruled out.  Now I think it is a network issue.  I have a different switch though.  I have a really nice Linksys 16-port gigabit switch.    I'm not running Vista, but still running XP.

My problem might have some differences though.  I can lose connection to the server even without stressing it.  Sometimes after a few hours it will disappear from the network.

I'm also getting a weird problem where the shares that are on my Main PC will disappear from the XBMC menu as well.    That is what makes me think it is a network issue.  I've tried to troubleshoot it, but got nowhere.
