1x 1TB HDD as array and 1x 1TB SSD as parity but 2 blks to small. Solvable?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

im using unraid till some weeks and im very impressed.

I installed unraid 6.9.1 on Intel NUC with 1 TB HDD and 1 TB NVMe SSD.

The 1 TB NVMe SSD should be used as parity because it isn't supported as array disk.

Now i have the following problem, the hdd has 61047660 blks and the NVMe SSD 61047598 blks.

As you can see the SSD (parity) is 2 blks smaller then HDD and so i can't use them as parity disk.

Is there anyway to use the NVMe SSD as parity disk, e.g. by reducing the size auf the hdd partition size?

Unfortunaly i can't change the hardware configuration, that means, the intel nuc can only contain 1x 3.5 HDD and 1x NVMe SSD.

Best regards

Stefan

Because of the new partition layout for non rotational devices, partitions will always be small than disks, even if they have the same original blocks, so you can never have a same capacity SSD parity with disk(s) as array device(s).

It's not better supported as parity, SSDs can't be trimmed when used in the array, either data or parity, you can still used them, many people do, including myself.

Hi,

thanks for your answer, didn't know this :).

Does this mean, it isn't supported but it works?

As i know, the problem is the "garbage collection" (TRIM) and the associated performance loss?

Is this also the case when using the "Dynamix SSD TRIM" plugin?

How do you use the SSD?

Thanks

Regards

Stefan

It's not officially supported but it woks, with the lack of trim limitation.

Plugin doesn't help, it can't trim array devices.

I have a small SSD only array, parity plus 4 data devices, mostly for testing.
