February 17, 201115 yr Assuming I'm using this mobo: Supermicro X8SIL-FO in a 22 drive build, what UPS should I use? What I'm really looking for is the following: Power outtage happens. Oh no! My server is at risk due to bad shutdown! But wait, I've got a UPS. Data is safe. System detects the outtage as it switches to battery and notifies me in some way. I can then log in thru IPMI and safely shut-down the system. I'm not up to speed on IPMIs abilities (yet). Is this possible?

Then you can easily install apcupsd (using the package manager in unMENU makes it a few clicks of your mouse) and have it safely shut down the server in the event of an extended outage. It will also notify you if you install ssmtp and mail status alerts.
February 17, 201115 yr Also with the powerdown package and Joe's unMenu you can get it to powerdown the server as well so you don't have to log in to do it. All automated if you aren't there. Josh
February 18, 201115 yr All automated if you aren't there. There are times when I am not watching for a power failure... (in fact, most nights when I'm sleeping) The UPS will power my server for about 10 minutes. It starts a shutdown after 5. There are many times where I'm asleep for periods of time much longer than 10 minutes.
