October 14, 200718 yr Greetings, My system has been working flawlessly for many months. ON Friday night we finished a movie and I powered down the server as per usual. Saturday, I started it up to copy some files and I couldn't access the server via the network - neither using telnet, network places or a web browser. I began to invetigate. The software appears to boot-up like it should (watching via a connected monitor). I figured it was the onboard NIC that had died (Sometimes slow connections), so I disabled it in the bios and installed a replacement card. Still no success. I could not ping the address. I gave up and got back to it today. Viewing the log, I noticed the last four drives where showing as missing(md8,9,10,11). These are all connected to a Promise SATA300TX4 expansion card (via Tom). So I figure the card has died - so I replaced it. Suddenly the log shows my media shares (which I hadn't noticed before) - like movies1, movies2 etc. The shares from the last 4 drives were still not showing. Then, using the tail command, the last 4 drives started to show as missing again. I swapped the PCI slot - still nothing. The network is showing a connection (the LED's on the gigabit Switch show a connection and I can connect to my Xbox) - so I believe the network is working. XBMC cannot access the unRAID. The LED's on the onboard NIC show a connection, so I've reverted back to that. Still nothing. I turned off the firewall and suddenly I could ping the address, but leaving the firewall off still did not allow a connection via the web interface or any other means. "Ifconfig" shows the correct IP address. I have not changed any firewall settings (like I say, the system has been working flawlessly) I then tried another flash drive (including the lastest 4.2.1 release) - still nothing. I'm at wits end and about to scream. I have read numerous other posts about network problems - these do not seem related. I even tried the "nolapic" change. This only seemed to slow start-up down (Took 5 times longer to hit login), but still no joy. My H/W is listed in my sig. [Edit}My syslog is attached - (the server wouldn't let it upload - well below max size too??) See Below. I really hope someone can help me on this. As always, greatly appreciated. Sorry...no matter what I tried the log would not upload Sad Yeah, attachments don't seem to be working currently, I hope Tom or someone with a direct line to him lets him know. Your syslog looks perfectly fine, with 12 drives found and ready. The last 4 show as missing, because of problems you mention from the previous run, just looks like they are waiting to be re-assigned. There are definitely a number of problem reports involving these Promise cards. Some are successfully using them, but they don't inspire confidence. I would like to ask you, if you don't mind answering, why you feel it necessary to hide the drive serial numbers. I know that more did in the past, and I've never been able to think of a reason for it. Excuse my ignorance.
October 14, 200718 yr Author Hi Rob, Thx for the response. Yeah...not sure of the reliability of the Promise Cards, although it has been working fine since installation. I'm not convinced it is the card that is the problem - why would it affect the network connection? Also, a brand new replacement didn't resolve the issue? I figure the missing drives is the result of a previous attempt at resolving the problem - therefore making them unassigned. Sure hope some answers are forthcoming! I can't believe how much I've come to rely on this machine, and having it unavailable isn't much fun. I really hope the data is okay as I just spent the last couple of months (fulltime over winter) backing up our DVD collection. Not about to do it again... As for the S/N removal I feel it's prudent in today's world to be a little security/privacy minded. Call me paranoid I guess
October 14, 200718 yr Author An Update, I suddenly had the bright idea to check the server using my wife's laptop. The damn thing fired up the unRAID server web page just like it should. I was shocked! Don't know why I never thought of it before. (Forget about it being a new toy) Coming back to my PC I saw a warning icon saying there was an IP conflict. Don't really know what caused this, but I suspect DCHP?? server reset the auto IP addresses and set my wife's laptop and the server the same address (the server had a static IP). I changed the IP setting in unRAID to auto and away it went again. I almost got excited! I realise now the Xbox couldn't access it as the array didn't start because of the missing drives - doh! Also, as we figured, me attempting to resolve things caused it to unassign the last 4 drives (TX4 card), so I reset them and now the server is going through an 8 hour parity check. Looks like everything is back to normal - touch wood...or my head which is the same thing Only cost me about 10 hours.... I'm just really happy things are almost back to normal...as I was most worried.
October 14, 200718 yr don't know what you are using for DHCP server, but there should be a way to limit the range of addresses it uses (such as at work, DHCP Scope only includes 11 - 199. All others are reservered for static IP devices on the subnet. My router has a setting to configure the range for DHCP. In my home setup, only laptops are pulling DHCP anyway, and my range starts high so I have plenty of space available for static IPs with out getting conflicts (unless I screw up and try to set 2 systems to the same IP).
October 18, 200718 yr Author don't know what you are using for DHCP server, but there should be a way to limit the range of addresses it uses (such as at work, DHCP Scope only includes 11 - 199. All others are reservered for static IP devices on the subnet. My router has a setting to configure the range for DHCP. In my home setup, only laptops are pulling DHCP anyway, and my range starts high so I have plenty of space available for static IPs with out getting conflicts (unless I screw up and try to set 2 systems to the same IP). I'm pretty sure the DHCP server is setup this way. What happens is that my system is stable for months or even years without a hitch. Then something goes wrong and because I'm not a power user I have to go and re-learn everything I've forgotten about the setup (usually most of it). Not really sure what cause this, but I've made a note should it happen again. Thx for the input
October 18, 200718 yr Hi, i had the same problem a few weeks ago. My motherboard have 2 LAN ports is it your case ? my cable network was connected on port 1 for exemple, after shutdown and reboot my unRAID server, the port 2 was choose by the system !! so i changed the cable of port and it's run now. But maybe it's not the same problem.
October 18, 200718 yr Tafkap, can you not disable one in bios without disabling both? that should keep you from having to swap cables periodically.
