February 19, 201115 yr Hi, New to this so just popping up with a stupid question. I am trying to source parts to build a 20-24 drive server. On the motherboard front the one i really want to get is the Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H which has 2xSata II ports and 6xSata III ports. I know that Sata III drives arent yet supported in unraid, but is there a way round it with the motherboards? I dont want to buy something that i have to disable ports on as this defeats the object. Also does anyone have any experience with this board? Will it happily run a couple of Supermicro SAS boards (8 port) without port clashes as i read here that the ASUS pro board has issues? TVM Darren
February 19, 201115 yr i would first of all check for HPA on this board see if it can be disabled or if it doesn't have it gigabyte boards seem to cause a lot of problems with that feature
February 19, 201115 yr That is a nice looking board and the only thing I can say in regards to it working with with the SASLP's is to search around the net and see if someone if using them together. The only other thing I will suggest is that if you are going to be building a 20-24 drive server then look at the Supermicro X8SIL-F-O. Also check you the Hardware Compatibility Page for an idea of what people are using and have been reported.
February 19, 201115 yr No confirmation, and a "thank you" follow-up post...guess it would work with the right cables http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=7183.0 Looks like a great board, unfortunately zipzoomfly is sold-out at $99.99 http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10012341 HPA disabled by default (believe this is standard now with newer Gigabytes)...this threads asks the same question regarding the SASLP card, but no answer. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=6745.0
February 20, 201115 yr Will any spinning drives with SATA III interfaces actually move data at speeds greater than SATA II speeds? All of my SATA II disks won't sustain SATA I speeds.
February 20, 201115 yr Not sure about that board but on my asus pro board the sata 3 ports can be set to run at 3gb/s.(sata 2) The supermicro car I have on mine also only runs at sata 2 I don't know of any platter hdds that will run at sata 3, I believe it is for ssds. Josh
February 20, 201115 yr unRAID is fully compatible with SATAIII, but the speed differences won't be at all noticeable with unRAID, as has been said several times already in this thread.
