01111000
I recently built an UNRAID server. It works great for the most part. But after being on for a little over 24 hours uptime, the computer emits a long beep. The beep sounds like the BIOS test beeps that are performed during bootup. The sound is constant (one loud beep). Oddly enough, performance is not effected. I can access the server from IPMI etc normally. When it happens, I simply stop the array and restart; everything works fine after the reboot. The sound is very annoying though. Here is the build. PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371029 RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148317 (ran memtest, returned no errors) Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182243 Mod note: Since the beep sounds like a mobo beep, I put the topic here. Not sure where else to put it, sorry. Quote Link to comment

01111000
There are no fans hooked up to the mobo. IPMI view tells me that the system temps are at 43C for the System and 41 for CPU. When I restart the box, it's the same after bootup. I made sure to check temps the first time this occurred. Quote Link to comment
Rajahal
There are no fans hooked up to the mobo. This might actually be the problem. Some motherboards will freak out if there are no fans hooked up to them and assume you've had a fan failure. You might want to contact Supermicro and ask them for assistance. There might be a BIOS update that fixes this. Quote Link to comment
SSD
Some MB require a CPU an and will beep if you don't have one - but it happens immediately, not after hours. If you omit the 4/8 pin PSU you can also get beeps. A graphics card plugged into to motherboard but without the extra power cable attached is another cause of bootup beeping. My guess of this beep would be a true temperature issue. There are CPU temps, system temps, maybe even NB/SB temps. My guess is something is getting hotter than it wants to be. You could try temporarily adding a cooling fan and see if the beeping stops happening. I would not just ignore this. Cooking your electronics is not a good idea! Quote Link to comment
lionelhutz
AMI says a single beep post BIOS is a memory refresh timer error. Section 8.2; http://www.ami.com/support/doc/AMIBIOS8_Checkpoint_and_Beep_Code_List_PUB.pdf Sounds like you could have memory issues. Peter Quote Link to comment
01111000
After a few hours of looking things up, I think it is either the fact I have no fans connected to the motherboard, or it's because the CPU hits 45C. Every time it has happened I quickly check the IPMI temperature and it reads 45C. I don't have a clue on how to mount a fan onto a motherboard that is so small. I'll try to figure something out because the sound is very annoying. The motherboard uses onboard graphics and cpu, I did not need to install anything else. The RAM is good, as I've ran memcheck. Thanks guys, I just need to figure out how to mount a fan (the mobo is a flex atx).. (the case does have a fan up front that pushes air to the back, but I guess that isn't enough) Quote Link to comment
lionelhutz
Is there not an adjustable setting in the BIOS for the CPU temp? I know many BIOS have an adjustable setting for the CPU warning or shutdown temp. Peter Quote Link to comment
Rajahal
There are two fan headers near the CPU labeled 'CPU fan' and 'sys fan'. I suggest hooking up a fan to one or both of the fan headers. It can be a regular case fan, it doesn't have to be a CPU fan per se. You may need a 4 pin to 3 pin adapter, such as this. I've got a ton of extras, so if you are in the US I can ship you one if you need it, though many case fans ship with them. I also suggest positioning this fan so that it pulls hot air off the CPU and out of the back of the case. Also make sure that you've hooked up a regular 4 pin molex power cable to the power port next to the SATA ports. Bad advice, see below. Quote Link to comment
01111000
I cannot stop the overheat alarm in the bios. Every time it hits 45C it happens, I've been taking note. I need a way to mount a fan over the motherboard Raj, regarding the power port: bad advice! That's an output, not an input and something will fry. I'm going to hook up fans to the headers, but as I've said, I have no means of mounting them. I need something like this: http://www.xoxide.com/sunbeam-wherever-pci-rack.html Quote Link to comment
Rajahal
Raj, regarding the power port: bad advice! That's an output, not an input and something will fry. I'm going to hook up fans to the headers, but as I've said, I have no means of mounting them. I need something like this: http://www.xoxide.com/sunbeam-wherever-pci-rack.html Noted. I apologize profusely, of course I never meant to offer bad advice. I have a SUPERMICRO MBD-X7SLA-H-O motherboard which has a similar 4 port molex connector. The board does not work at all without a molex plug from the PSU connected to that port, so I took that to mean that the 4 pin molex plug took the place of the standard 4 pin motherboard power plug. Clearly not all Supermicro boards are the same. Again, sorry about that. For my own edification, how did you determine that the 4 pin molex port on the motherboard was an output instead of an input? Did the manual say as much? Quote Link to comment
01111000
Yeah, the manual had numerous warnings regarding that molex port. Quote Link to comment
dgaschk
Use silicone caulk to mount the fan. You can cut it with a knife or razor when you need to remove it. Put the caulk on all edges not just spots. Quote Link to comment
