February 20, 201115 yr I bought this motherboard for a new build for my son so I thought I'd run the level 1 test to get it added to the unRAID Hardware Compatibility page. I ran the test multiple times with different configurations (see below). Included in the attached zip is three files. 1. unRAID_5.0-beta4_MSI_880GM-E43_BR10i.syslog.txt 2. unRAID_5.0-beta4_MSI_880GM-E43_sata.syslog.txt 3. unRAID_4.7_MSI_880GM-E43.syslog.txt The syslogs were created in the order listed above. I precleared the two data drives using Joe's preclear_disk.sh on my current production 4.65 system before the parts for this new build arrived. Step 1: unRAID 5.0 beta 4 + IBM BR10i I assembled the parts plus installed an IBM BR10i 8 port adapter which I connected all the hard drives to. I made a flash drive and booted with unRAID 5.0 beta 4; added the drives to the empty array and parity calculation started. It finished with no errors. Then I started the parity check. It finished with no errors. I saved the syslog file as unRAID_5.0-beta4_MSI_880GM-E43_BR10i.syslog.txt. Step 2: unRAID 5.0 beta 4 (moved drives to onboard sata ports) I moved the drives to the onboard sata ports, booted up using the same flash drive and ran a parity check. It finished without errors. I save the syslog as unRAID_5.0-beta4_MSI_880GM-E43_sata.syslog.txt. Step 3: unRAID 4.7 (onboard sata ports) I made a new flash drive with unRAID 4.7 and booted up. I added the drives to the empty array. Parity calc started automatically. It wrote to the parity drive but with no errors reported. When it finished I started a parity check. It finished without errors. I saved the syslog as unRAID_4.7_MSI_880GM-E43.syslog.txt. The system configuration: Motherboard: MSI 880GM-E43 (bios v2.11 12082010) Northbridge: AMD 880G Southbridge:AMD SB710 LAN: Realtek 8111DL SATA: 5 sata, 1 eSata. cpu: Phenom II X2 555 BE (unlocked to Phenom II X4 B55) ram: 8GB DDR3 G.Skill F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL Adapter: IBM BR10i 8 port sata Note: for a typical unRAID build I would have used a Sempron 140 and 2GB of ram. The motherboards bios is simple without a lot of confusing stuff. I didn't update the bios version as MSI advises not to without good reason to. The motherboard ran cool to the touch during all tests. I ran memtest86+ for 12 hours before any unRAID tests. Bios settings: At first boot I reset bios to default optimized settings then made these custom changes. ------------------- Integrated Peripherals On-chip ATA Devices/RAID Mode [AHCI] Advanced BIOS Features Boot Sequence To unlock: Cell Menu Advanced Clock Calibration [AUTO] CPU Core Control [AUTO] ------------------- MSI_880gm-e43.zip
February 23, 201115 yr Thanks Queeg...I believe a MSI 880G or Biostar 880 will be my 2nd unRAID project. (original build with ASUS) Newegg Comparison
February 23, 201115 yr Just had a look through all the syslogs and they look fine. The one syslog is with the LSI card installed so there are all kinds of errors related to the fact that temp could not be retrieved and that spindown was not working quite correctly. I don't have the time right now to get this added to the Hardware Compatibility Page so if someone wants to beat me to it it would be much appreciated!! If you need anything to be able to do that let me know.

I got that board from Frys with a $20 MIR so it was $55. Nice deal.
