Will unRAID ever support 24 data drives?

Featured Replies

I'm debating on upgrading my case, currently looking at the Norco 4224.. and debating on spending the extra for 24 hotswap bays. The case is overall better designed than the other Norco cases. Just wondering if it's even possible to support that many data drives with 1 parity.

Currently have 20 drives in my Norco 4020, however the air flow in this case isn't as good as the newer Norcos.. and i'm seeing some unwanted temps when most of my drives are spun up.

Only LimeTech can answer this question.  As I understand it, there's no theoretical limit to the number of drives that can be supported by unRAID.  I believe the current limit of 22 drives is a result of what LimeTech has the capability of testing, but this is just my conjecture.

To maximize the drive bays in the Norco 4224 wouldn't you want 23 data drives and 1 parity drive?

I too am thinking of upgrading to a Norco 4224 case.

I don't have the Norco 4220, but I am thinking that I want the Norco 4224, even if LimeTech does not support the 24 drive array. I have not totally made up my mind, but my current thinking is that I could use the two unused bays for my own purposes, specifically for near-line swaps (warm swaps?), and for pre-clear bays. 20 data disks is a lot of disks in an array, and the potential for having two disks going bad at close to the same time increases. My thinking is that if I have two slots for preclears and disks ready for rebuilds will give me a tat more redundancy and readiness to recover from the inevitable.

At least that is what I have been thinking lately.

don't forget an extra parity drive is on the roadmap.
