February 26, 201115 yr I just moved all of my drives (1 parity, 1 cache, 3 data) to a new box (with all new hardware). After I booted up for the first time, I set the devices to the appropriate disks, but one of the disks (of course that damn EARS drive that always gives me problems) showed as unformatted. I stupidly clicked format, and now (as I expected) that disk is empty. Is there now a way to rebuild to get the data back on that disk? I did a rebuild/parity check prior to the move so I assume that information is in there? Can I just do a 'Restore'?
February 26, 201115 yr Stop the array. Unassign the formatted drive. Start the array. Stop the array. Assign the formatted drive. Start the array. The missing contents will be rebuilt on the formatted drive. Starting and then stopping the array with the drive unassigned will cause unRAID to forget about the drive and consider it as new when it is started again.

I'm afraid you'll find the re-constructed drive is now also freshly "formatted" You were given incorrect advice. (It did not do any harm, you did that yourself by formatting the drive, but it did cost you the time it took to re-construct from parity the exact same freshly formatted drive.) Let the re-construction complete and DO NOT WRITE TO THE DRIVE. You can probably get most of your content back by following the steps outlined here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=5087.msg47070#msg47070 It will take a long time to run, as it has to scan the entire drive for files. Good luck. And no, the "restore" button would have not done it either. It sets a new disk configuration and has absolutely NOTHING to do with restoring data. No, the formatting also changed parity. Parity is NOT a backup. Parity provides for improved reliability and up-time. When you formatted the disk the corresponding bytes in parity were also written reflected the formatting. You can NEVER trust parity unless a drive was physically disconnected (loose cable) Anybody who tells you differently is fooling themselves. In (almost) any other case where a drive is disabled it is because a "write" to it failed. It is therefore not to be trusted as it does not have the data that was written. Joe L.

No, no problem... it is writing exactly was is already there. (basically making no changes)

The process must be done with the array started., but you must un-mount the disk being rebuilt, and to do that you'll need to stop samba. Once the reiserfsck is completed, and you re-mount the drive, and re-start samba you'll be able to get to the files, or, after the reiserfsck is complete, it is far easier to just stop and re-start the array. Then it will re-mount the drive and re-start samba for you.

February 26, 201115 yr According to it there is no file system on disk3 to mount. Your "format" apparently did not. (did not format) You can try to format it again from the command line I guess. and then try to rebuild the file tree by scanning the newly formatted disk. I did it once as an experiment. Or, you can try just rebuilding the superblock on the disk, but it is probably easier to just use the format command mkreiserfs /dev/md3

I have no idea. You watched as it happened... did it complete the format? or did you interrupt it? Right now the disk seems to not have a reiserfs on it. You can try to rebuild the superblock, but as warned in the wiki, the default answers to the prompts it will present are NOT the ones you want. Anything and everything you do at this point is potentially as destructive as your original "format." If you have a completele un-allocated disk of similar size you can try to make a backup image of the "unformatted" disk so you can return to it, and try an alternate recovery method. If you have a spare disk, and it is /dev/sdz (where "z" is a single letter) you can copy from the existing disk to it by typing dd if=/dev/sde of=/dev/sdz bs=1M where sde = the three letter native linux device of the un-formatted disk. and sdz = the new spare disk not assigned to your array at all. (it does not need to be formatted or prepared in any way) I'm getting ready to go out to a dinner dance with my wife. You'll be on your own till late this evening when I get back home. Joe L.
February 27, 201115 yr Author No problem Joe. Hope you enjoyed the time out with your wife. I was actually out myself so I haven't done anything since this morning. I'm at a loss as to what to try next. I'm afraid to format the drive again in case there's a chance the data is still all on there. Unfortunately I don't have a spare drive big enough to cover this one. It's a 2TB drive that believe was around half full. I have a live version of Ubuntu. I wonder if I could start that up to at least see if there's anything on the drive?
