Add Disk While Array Is Running

Hi there just wondering is it safe to add a disk to one of the empty slots in my supermicro 5in3 hotswap tray while the array is running. All I want to do is preclear the disk I install, or do I have to reboot the server for it to recognize a new disk. Thanks

    A reboot is required.

     

    That is not correct.

     

    If you have AHCI enabled for your SATA ports, then you can add a drive w/o rebooting the server.  While unRAID will not see it, other utilities will, and you can preclear it with the preclear script.
