Ystebad Posted April 29, 2021 Posted April 29, 2021 My need: 1) primary NAS with ~4TB of photographs that are critical to protect. Prefer a way to rsync with compare to another network drive which is direct attached to computer that then backs up to cloud (cloud backup doesn’t support NAS drive) 2) Plex server with the usual dockers running to support and storage of media 3) 8 disk minimum + M2 for cache/VM 4) Optional but preferred: Rack mount case 24” max 3-4U 3) Optional: would be fun to have a gaming VM spin up option I’m not at all familiar with AMD processors. Have read they have had issues with Unraid in the past. Definitely want ECC ram. But Xeon generally don’t play well with plex (no direct play). Any suggestions for processor/MB/Memory, etc? Quote

Huh? I have been using Xeons for years in my unRAID server and it has no problems with Plex at all. Most of my content direct plays locally and even over the Internet in many cases. See my signature for server specs including ECC RAM. I used wrong term - I meant quick sync. My current xeon based synology system doesn’t do it so I actually bought a little IBM nuc-like machine just to get a plex server that would stream. I didn’t think Xeon processors had quick sync available, but I guess I’m mistaken! The world of choosing a Xeon processor makes my head swim. I will investigate more including your setup. Haven’t built a PC for probably close to 20 years, used to be a long timer at 2cpu website building dual cpu systems when it was hard core. Don’t know anything anymore. All recent "entry-level" Xeons with an iGPU support Quick Sync Video. My E-2288G is roughly equivalent to an i9-9900K but with ECC support. Many of the current generation W-12xx Xeons also have an iGPU. The soon-to-be released W-13xx (11th generation) will also include many models with an iGPU The Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum lines do not have iGPU/QSV support. Quote

Of course, there is ALWAYS a new generation upgrade just when I’m ready to build a system. Seems to be a big upgrade power efficiency wise - think I should wait for Ice Lake? I’m excited I can stay with a Xeon - I think it will be more stable and less glitches than running an AMD chip even though I know their performance is pretty amazing today. Edit: just spent 15 minutes sorting through Xeon processor listings and my goodness what a freaking mess. I have NO idea what part to look for, there are multiple sockets even for the same core count. Edited April 30, 2021 by Ystebad Quote
