Remote access to Plex while using starlink

Featured Replies

Good afternoon all,

I have recently moved and my best bet for high speed internet was to start using my starlink dish as my main internet source.

Currently they are running CGNat for IP distribution and the IPv6 service is still not 100%.

What I would like to do is somehow connect to a service that allows me to assign a static IP to my Plex docker.

Does anyone have a recommendation on how to best do that?  Also what service would be best to suited for this?

Appreciate all the info that you can provide

Cheers,

Chris

I too am looking for a solution to this problem as my ISP is StarLink as well.  As of right now I'm thinking IPv6 is the only viable option, but I'd like to hear what others may be using.  I've also heard of https://ngrok.com as an potential option, but I didn't look into it yet.

What I have done thus far is this

I created a tunnel using Mullvad following the Wireguard guide below

https://forums.unraid.net/topic/84316-wireguard-vpn-tunneled-access-to-a-commercial-vpn-provider/

Then I went back to the Mullvad site and created a port forward for that connection

Then using a iptables line I found in the article below

https://yevhen.ca/running-a-plex-server-through-starlink-cgnat-with-mullvad-vpn/

I added it to Unraid using the terminal window substituting the port I received from Mullvad

Once that was done I went into plex and set the external port to the port that was assigned to my from Mullvad and hit apply

With any luck it should show accessible.

This may not be the best way of doing it and I would welcome to hear what others have to say

Cheers,

Chris

how did you go with this? Did this solution work?

I did a quick skim on an article that was reporting to use a VPS and then a VPN tunnel from that to your network

and you could use pfsense as your gateways and VPN's which would probably make things easier and more secure,

after the setup is done you can forward ports via the VPS to the tunneled VPN

but a Virtual Private Server costs money

For anyone stumbling upon this in 2025. I got this to work on my Starlink super easy now by doing the following:

  1. Register a free Tailscale account.
  2. Install the official Tailscale plugin from the Apps section in my Unraid web gui. It's called "Tailscale (Plugin)". Don't pick any of the other options.
  3. Once the plugin is up and running open the Unraid terminal and issue the following command: "tailscale funnel --bg 32400" (If your plex doesn't listen on the default port of 32400, change it appropriately.) and follow any prompts it gives you.

That's it. Easypeasy lemon squeezy. Simply proceed to connect to the URL Tailscale gave you to open your Plex. E.g. "https://yourunraidserver.splur-splork.ts.net/"

Note that the 'funnel' command makes the Plex publicly available on the internet. It will still require Plex authentication of course. If you don't issue the 'funnel' command the Plex will still be available, but only within the VPN, so to devices that have Tailscale running on them and are authorised.

Unraid is an operating system - if you don't already have it, being on this forum doesn't really make sense.

Kinda like if someone came into the Ford forum and said 'I have a Toyota, not a Ford, how do I make it a Ford?'
