Random disk spin-ups

Recommended Posts

I am experiencing many random disk spin-ups.

It is almost always disk3 which has a dedicated share "Documents". No other share is using this disk.

My last spin-up was a few minutes ago (09:42AM).

  • No one is at home and all PCs are in sleep mode.
  • There are 2 running Windows 10 VMs but no files are open on them.
  • Running dockers: Home Assistant HassIO Supervisor, MariaDB, LogitechMediaServer, Qbittorrent - All mapped to cache and downloads pool devices (not in array)

I have the FileActivity plugin installed and can see access to files I have not accessed in months:

Jun 01 09:42:14 OPEN => /mnt/disk3/Documents/Installed Utilities/Hardware Drivers/3D/Software/FreeCAD-0.18.4.980bf90-WIN-x64-installer.exe
Jun 01 09:42:15 OPEN => /mnt/disk3/Documents/Installed Utilities/Hardware Drivers/3D/Software/prusa3d_win_2_2_9_1.exe
Jun 01 09:43:51 OPEN => /mnt/disk3/Documents/Dan's Documents/Computer/Install Windows VM.txt

While writing this post additional disks have spun up (disk2, disk5) and nothing additional logged in the FilesActivity logs.

Each spin-up is visible in the syslog by the read SMART lines.

Jun 1 09:56:18 Tower emhttpd: read SMART /dev/sdj
Jun 1 09:56:18 Tower emhttpd: read SMART /dev/sdc

Another example is this morning (no one home) all array disks which were not already spun-up started to spin:

Jun 1 08:14:48 Tower emhttpd: read SMART /dev/sdf
Jun 1 08:55:51 Tower emhttpd: read SMART /dev/sdg
Jun 1 08:56:02 Tower emhttpd: read SMART /dev/sdj
Jun 1 08:56:22 Tower emhttpd: read SMART /dev/sdc
Jun 1 08:56:22 Tower emhttpd: read SMART /dev/sdi

How can I debug this and find out what keeps spinning up my drives?

Update:

I see plenty of people reporting this issue - Is there a fix in the works?

Additional information:

Each time the drive spins up the number of reads (on the MAIN tab) increases by ~3-6.
