March 17, 201115 yr I am trying to get around the frustrating issue with unRAID constantly giving me error -51 when I'm trying to fill specific drives to maximum capacity with OS X. I usually can get around the error by uploading to the root of the drive, or sometimes to a different folder. Last resort is to restart unRAID and that typically allows me to transfer files until the drive is completely full (with only several hundred megabytes free). But for one drive I've done everything and this time nothing works: error -51 is always the error when there is 8.08GB free and I'm trying to copy a 7.76GB file. So now I've resorted to FTP and it works, but my question is: Are files transferred via FTP synced with the parity drive? I've searched the forums and Google for unRAID FTP but there is very little information gleaned.
March 17, 201115 yr Author Thanks! I had a feeling that it does since the transfer speed via FTP is much slower than to other FTP servers on my network.
March 17, 201115 yr Last resort is to restart unRAID and that typically allows me to transfer files until the drive is completely full (with only several hundred megabytes free). I suggest NOT filling drives this full. There is no hard evidence that it is harmful in much/any way but the reiserfs is a journaled system and it needs some space to do that. "Several hundred megabytes" may be enough or it may not. I would suggest leaving 5-10GB free on each drive.
March 17, 201115 yr Author Wow. Thanks for this important bit of information. I understand that a journaled file system is good for when there are lots of file transactions and a recovery may be necessary, but for a static media server wherein the files loaded are pretty much entrenched and only occasionally would be changed, is it necessary to maintain space for the journalling history?

I'm pretty sure the journaling space is already reserved so there is no need to save free space for the journal. If it wasn't then people would be corrupting their journal every time they filled up a disk.
