July 15, 20214 yr Hi, For my "new" Unraid server I have the choice between the following CPUs / Hardware: i7-4790 in a Dell Precicion T1700 i5-7500 in a Dell Optiplex 3050 The i7 comes with hyper threading (8 vs 4 cores), the i5 is much more newer and supports a higher ram speed. I am using no classic VMs, but Docker containers (about 15). Which CPU would you prefer and why?
July 15, 20214 yr Depends... Both CPUs are very old - but i would take the "more cores CPU" 👍 RAM-Speed is not relevant on Intel-CPUs and it doesn't matter for unraid... But that's just my opinion Edited July 15, 20214 yr by Zonediver

July 15, 20214 yr Author good point, currently I don't need HW transcoding, maybe in future... I will keep that in mind.

Thats very important - take the advantage of this "more powerfull" iGPU. The iGPU on the i7 is way to old and doesn't have a good quality compared with the HD630 from the i5. The question is now, what is more important - CPU-power or iGPU-power Edited July 15, 20214 yr by Zonediver
July 15, 20214 yr Author I think this could even help when using nextcloud and its "preview generation" for videos/photos (which I am already using). The longer I think about it the more I tend towards the i5 Edited July 15, 20214 yr by nicx

In addition to the much faster RAM and newer GPU, it's also cooler running and more efficient (14 nm vs the older 22 nm lithography)
