[SOLVED] Drives not detected with Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8

The HDIO errors are common with the MV8 card during preclear..

and search for "HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed for" within these forums.

Edit:  I must say that reading other errors and "issues" with the MV8 card are bothersome.  While it is compatible with unRAID, too many problems (and associated syslog entries) have been reported on these forums for me to be comfortable using the card.  I understand they "should" work and the great value of the MV8 card...but just not for me at this time.

I have the same motherboard and Super Micro card.  I haven't added any drives to my raid yet though.  I have the same results with the preclear -l switch, so that must be normal at least with this motherboard.  I had some issues preclearing drives with it though.  Theses were also 20EARS.  It would just lock up.  Haven't got down to the bottow of it yet.

Hi, icon123.

Just wanted to let you know, I just got done w/ preclearing my two new wd20ears drives on the supermicro card and they precleared fine.  It did throw a few errors in the syslog during the preclear, but again, looking at other posts, that seems to be somewhat 'normal' with this card.

I'm going to add the drives to the array and will definitely post back if I have any issues after that.

Hopefully, you'll get to the bottom of your lockup issues.  Good luck!

Thanks for the info, mbryanr.

Your links, plus more searching for the other errors have me feeling a bit better about these (it seems others have experienced similar).  It still seems to be a bit of a mystery, but my preclears finished with no additional errors, so I'm taking that as a good sign.

At this point, I think I'm going to go ahead and add the new drives (on the new supermicro card) to the array and just monitor the syslog for awhile and see what happens.

Thanks to all for the info and advice.

I mentioned this on another thread but it seems like a bunch of the errors are related to the linux kernel driver for this card which has been improved in the kernel used in 5b6. Doesnt look like its fully solved but getting there. Feel free to read the following for your reference but I think its just the preclear thats mainly the issue and the card works fine with drives attached as part of the array.

Thanks for following back up.  Some day I will get the time and confidence to start adding drives to the array with this card.  In the meantime, let us know if something else comes up.  Hope for the best.  Thanks again.
