lionelhutz
Hey guys i hope you can help me out because i'm in a difficult situation, i have: Unraid 4.5.6 PRO Parity Samsung 2 TB disk 5 x WD Ears 2 TB (all jumpered) Right now 1 of the ears disk is broken. I already ordered a new one (WD20EARX). After reading the first post i still don't know what to do in my personal case. Should i: 1. update to the lastest stable unraid version. 2. go to settings > default partition format to 4K alligned. 3. insert the new drive without jumper and leave them on on the other ears. 4. preclear the new disk. 5. rebuild my system. Can someone tell me if this is the correct way? thanks. Just jumper the new EARS and replace the failed disk. Using 4k aligned will not gain any performance compared to using the jumper. A mistake when upgrading can cause you to lose the data on the failed drive. So, your steps have 1 neutral benefit and 1 negative benefit meaning it's a losing proposition. His replacement drive is an EARX, not an EARS. The five steps he has laid out are the correct path to take. Why? The WD info shows EARX can use the jumper the same as the EARS drive. http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/search/1/a_id/1679# Link to comment
