November 17, 201114 yr So what should I do? Jumpered - use unaligned. Unjumpered - use 4k aligned. Should I leave the new drive as-is? Or should I pull it out and remove the jumper and then do another preclear on it?

December 21, 201114 yr I am building a new array. I am using preclear_disk.sh 1.13 and unRAID 5 b14. I am starting out with a mix of Green and Black WD drives. All drives (except the parity which is a new 2TB Black) were in use on Windows systems before and none have ever had jumpers. I am running preclears on 4 drives at the moment. On two of the Greens I used preclear with -A. One is a WD15EARS, the other a WD20EARX. Below are the details of preclear -t for both after the successful preclear completed. My question/concern is that I have different Sector and I/O size for both. One shows 4k, the other 512b. Is something wrong here? January 4, 201214 yr Newbie question but I am assuming this issue is not specific just to EARS drives? I have WD20EARX and WD10EADS that were formated using the default settings (unjumpered) I have gone ahead and changed the Default partition format to 4K. I have no issues. Is it worth my time to do anything with these drives? EDIT: Going to assume no as i'm getting over 80MB/s+ on my parity checks
January 5, 201214 yr Newbie question but I am assuming this issue is not specific just to EARS drives? wrong. It is just specific to EARS drives.
January 26, 201214 yr precleared with the jumper on (older EARS drive, no issues) then powered down, removed jumper (didn't intend for the jumper to be on there at all, but i forgot it was jumpered previously in WHS), powered on, added to array and formatted like normal. no issues with this, correct? starting to migrate some data, but if i need to do something else to improve performance (or reliability for that matter) i'd like to do it while it's near empty. Thanks edit: 5.0b14 if it matters
January 28, 201214 yr Wow I'm confused here , I just ordered two Western Digital Caviar Green 2 TB Desktop Hard Drive WD20EARX. What should I be prepared to do? Just leave them alone and preclear then format 4k ? Maybe I shouldn't of got western digital for the server. Any ideas here? I'll be running unraid 4.7
January 28, 201214 yr Format all new drives as 4k-aligned. Use NO jumper. okay so if their is a jumper, pull the jumper off preclear then format 4k?
January 29, 201214 yr Has it been formatted with the jumper? Why was the jumper added? I think their has been some confusion, I haven't even got to drive yet , I was wondering what to do when I do get it? The drive is a Western Digital Caviar Green 2 TB WD20EARX, do you think the drive will come with a jumper already on it from the factory? And if it does not should I just preclear the drive then format it 4k? Or if the drives comes with a jumper should I remove it? Thanks for the help Ryan
March 20, 201214 yr Hey guys i hope you can help me out because i'm in a difficult situation, i have: Unraid 4.5.6 PRO Parity Samsung 2 TB disk 5 x WD Ears 2 TB (all jumpered) Right now 1 of the ears disk is broken. I already ordered a new one (WD20EARX). After reading the first post i still don't know what to do in my personal case. Should i: 1. update to the lastest stable unraid version. 2. go to settings > default partition format to 4K alligned. 3. insert the new drive without jumper and leave them on on the other ears. 4. preclear the new disk. 5. rebuild my system. Can someone tell me if this is the correct way? thanks.
April 25, 201214 yr Rising from the dead here. I have 12 2tb EARS drives that are being removed from a WHS1 setup (Acer Easystore H340 + 2 Probox 4-bay e-sata boxes, yes I'm looking to get rid of them) they have been running jumpered for about 2 years with no problems (WHS1 no likee 4k aligned). They are about to get a massive preclear run on them (I think maybe 3 passes). Is it tickling the dragons tail to unjumper and 4k-align, or leave well enough alone and just leave them jumpered/unaligned? (I have not run any SMART tests or anything else yet, they have had data migrated off them and just sitting in static bags till I get words of wisdom from here)
April 26, 201214 yr Honestly, this has been being made rediculously hard. New drive options; #1 - No jumper and use 4k aligned. #2 - Jumper and use unaligned. Re-purposing a used drive to unRAID - Leave any existing jumper as is; Jumpered - use unaligned. No jumper - use 4k aligned. It's that simple. Do not change the jumper once you use the drive. All options listed above will perform the same so it is pointless to worry over not having a jumper on the drive.
April 26, 201214 yr would rather be safe than sorry on that many drives. old saying, the only stupid question is the one never asked

A mistake when upgrading can cause you to lose the data on the failed drive. So, your steps have 1 neutral benefit and 1 negative benefit meaning it's a losing proposition.

His replacement drive is an EARX, not an EARS. The five steps he has laid out are the correct path to take.
October 9, 201213 yr What about jumpered drives in the array that you are not changing? I thought it was said once jumpered just leave it. Moving forward, set to 4k-aligned, add new EARS drive no jumper and use the -A command with preclear and you are set. Is this not accurate? this is very good post dainik bhasker This is correct for all new drives.
