smakovits
Should the new drive be precleared before it is assigned to replace a failed drive? I assume the answer is yes, but I want to ask first. Thanks Link to comment
dgaschk
Yes. It is not required but highly recommended. In this case, the clearing is not required but testing the disk is. Link to comment
smakovits
do you happen to know the command for testing and not clearing or is it still just best to run the full test, all 10 steps for the full 24 hours? Thanks Link to comment
dgaschk
The clearing and testing happen at the same time. The drive arm is moved from the inside to outside of the disk and to random locations during the writing an reading of zeros. It is a tough workout for the drive. It is very good at revealing mechanical defects. Link to comment
smakovits
OK, running full test now. One thing that I hope I didnt screw up, was the old drive I never unassigned and when I added the new drive it got designated as drive 5. I then unassigned and preclear is going now, about 7.5 hours in. I think tomorrow at lunch time it will finish and then hope it is as easy as assigning to disk 5 again and clicking the check box and saying start to re-build data. If so, i am very happy with that.
