November 10, 20214 yr Hi, I have some proxmox servers that depend on my NAS for storage. I've noticed that, if I need to take my array offline or reboot it, even when it comes back online, for some reason promox doesn't seen the CIFS share anymore. I tried to remove it and add the storage again, when I enter the user and password I see the list of shares however, it becomes unavailable. I tried with my QNAP to see if it was a Proxmox issue but that doesn't happen with my QNAP. Anyone has a clue? The only way to fix this is my rebooting everything each time.. Extremely annoying.
November 10, 20214 yr Community Expert What server is the Local Master/Browser for your SMB Network? (Installing the "Dynamix Local Master" plugin will tell this.) Now, you also have to realize that it can take a long time for a SMB network to become stable. You should probably read this for information about the entire process: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/it-pro/windows-server-2003/cc737661(v=ws.10)?redirectedfrom=MSDN Yes, I know this paper is from 2009 but SMB still works the same way! It is a very old protocol and is best described as a Kludge that just sort-of works reasonably well. People who use it have simply learned to deal with its idiosyncrasies. BTW, rebooting SMB networks in a specific order (sometimes with delays between steps) is often the quickest resolve these types of problems.
November 10, 20214 yr Author I do not have a master server for the SMB network. I just have CFIS enabled and able to connect to each machine's users to get connected. Historically I had no issues but I am not maintaining an AD if that is what you are asking.
November 10, 20214 yr Community Expert Read the article. Any SMB network has to have a Local Master!!!! One Computer on any SMB network will be elected for that network-- even if there are only two computers on it. What one normally wants is for the Unraid server to be that Local Master as normally it is on 24-7. A stable Local Master situation generally results in a smoother running SMB network. (An AD is one level above a Local Master. And several levels of increased complexity in setting it up properly. Unraid does not really have any AD functionality built into it as I understand it.) In case you are wondering, CIFS is a part of SMB. As I understand it, CIFS is actually SMB-v1 which has been superseded by SMB-v2.X and SMB-v3.X. (Windows 10, by default, turns off SMB-v1 because of security series.) If you want to know more, do some Google searches. Unless you have hardware still running software from before 2010, SMB-v1 is probably not being used. (It may be installed but dormant.) SMB-v2 is much more efficient and safer to use. In fact, LimeTech has turned off SMB-v1/CIFS in all installs starting with ver6.10-rc1.
November 10, 20214 yr Author So I guess the problem was that I didn't set that up.. The master SMB is UNRAID but was using the wrong domain / workgroup (still set to WORKGROUP). But then this changed (SMB Master) to one of my VMs, oddly enough Home Assistant and not entirely sure why.
November 10, 20214 yr Community Expert You can force the election towards your Unraid server with this action: https://forums.unraid.net/topic/53023-network-trouble/?tab=comments#comment-519012 I have learned since then that you can stop and restart the SMB service by stopping and restarting the array rather than rebooting.
