Recommendation for drive controller that supports TRIM

Recommended Posts

Hello good folks!

I am about to dive into the unraid world and I have a couple of questions with regards to TRIM etc that I would really appreciate your help with answering. I have 8 x 8TB spinning drives that will be my main storage. These are connected directly to mobo. I also have about 16 Intel S3710 800gb. Have ordered a 16 bay SSD cage for these. I was thinking of splitting these drives in 2 with 8 used for cache and 8 used for games.

My questions are as follows:

1. Which 16i HBA's support TRIM under unraid? I seem to have a hard time finding out exactly what is needed.

2. Do my ssds support TRIM under unraid (I read there were a couple of different ways of implementing TRIM, namely DRAT/DZAT)?

3. Anything else I need to think of in this regards such as which fs to use? Or with regards to anything else? I appreciate all input and support and pardon me if this has been answered before but I have tried to look for answers myself without it making me any wiser.

LSI 93xx HBAs support trim, but only on devices with deterministic trim support.

You can check that yourself:

Thanks for your reply and help. So is 9300 the only card to support TRIM in Unraid, ie. 9400 does not?

Thanks for that post. I don't have any spare ports on my mobo at the moment, so I might have to check this on another sever/computer. But there is no quick and easy overview saying which drives have deterministic trim support? Edit: found these 2 pages which seems to indicate that my drives do indeed support it: https://www.truenas.com/community/threads/ssd-dying.95907/

Deterministic read ZEROs after TRIM will do right? https://www.thomas-krenn.com/de/wiki/Intel_DC_S3710_Series_SSDs

I would expect it does, but don't have one to confirm nor do I remember someone else confirming it.
