I'm pretty new to Unraid, but thus far I really like it.

One of my drives just threw a smart error, and after some googling, it seems that the prudent thing to do is to replace that drive (I am currently running an extended test just to be sure).

 

Now, I'm *pretty* sure that I know which physical drive it is, but I am concerned about accidentally disconnecting the wrong one.

 

I just shuffled all the internal components around to fit more drives in, and somehow, the act of unplugging the drives and plugging them back in (possibly to different ports) caused Unraid to lose track of one of the drives, prompting a parity rebuild operation.  If I unplug the wrong drive, it should still be able to rebuild the data if this happens again, right? (the smart error is "Current pending sector: 1").

Unraid doesn't care what ports the drives are using, it keeps track of disk assignments by their serial number. If during the shuffle, you failed to get a disk connected, and then you started the array with a disk missing, then it would become disabled and have to be rebuilt.

 

Go to Settings - Disk Settings and turn off Autostart. Don't start the array until it shows all of the disks assigned as they should be.
